2014-2015 University of Florida Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Consider three areas of integrity: personal, professional, and intellectual. Using an example, describe how these areas may be interrelated. In your response include why the connection between these areas is significant.

any suggestion on how to respond to such question?

EDIT: Also,
If you are not a legal resident of Florida according to your AMCAS application, write a statement describing your association with the State of Florida on the Supplemental Answers page. This statement is required even if you have no ties to the State of Florida.

WTF am i supposed to write here?

maybe since you applied there, you can say how you really want to live in Florida? Just a thought....talk about how you currently do not have ties but would like to change that in the near future.

Probably "I have no ties to Florida" and perhaps what ARKDEW25 suggested.

Also, a word to you all applying - Both the Dean and Director of Admissions look at this thread. During my interview day last year someone of importance at the UFCOM referenced SDN posts that mocked or belittled the secondary essays and stated that he/she prefers that those applicants go somewhere else for medical school. I don't think that was necessarily done in the above post, but it got close enough with the acronym to remind me of that experience. At this point I don't think that anyone that has posted on this thread should worry about their perception here, but I just wanted to give you the warning.

Those administrators even advise us to be careful with our Facebook posts!

How long is it taking for UF to receive LoR's? I am trying to see whether I need to call AMCAS or not but its only been a week, so not certain...

can some one post the secondary questions for the ones waiting for it? thanks and good luck 🙂
I did earlier in post #26, but some of them you cannot fill out without the secondary.

Those sometimes appear on your profile (the profile on your secondary application on UF's secondary application website) several days after they get the rest of your AMCAS application and/or other application materials. If the LOR's are marked as "received" by AMCAS then you should (in theory) have no problem. I don't know why there is a lag in the appearance of the LORs on UF's website, but I remember this happening for me too and it did not affect my application. I'd give it about a week or so, and if you don't see them, email admissions and ask if they have them, then go to AMCAS.

Submitted AMCAS on the first day, and then my secondary got lost in the interwebs so I was only complete on the 11th.

Thank you for the heads up! I will be more careful when commenting on such applications.. it is just that the question itself threw me off.. but now thanks to you and ARKDEW25 I have an idea on what to write 🙂.

Congrats to the ones go obtained II's!

Did you guys put anything on the additional information section?

All of my letters have been received by AMCAS for weeks. And I checked UF's page and it doesn't have them (although other schools I sent on that day do have them), I called admissions, and they said someone will call me back tomorrow, so hopefully we will get it figured out. I very much appreciate the reply.

BTW what are UF's classes like (sorry if asked already). Are they Pass/Fail, does everyone have to sit in on all lectures? If it is pass fail, is it a true pass/fail or like a fake pass, high pass, honors pass, kind of system? Also what is the deal with the steps: will they give you time off to study, do they have their own stuff that is working well to prep students?

Not trying to ramble but these are all things I know I would like to know, and I am sure others would as well. Thanks man!

I just took a second to tell them more about me that wouldn't pick up from my application (i.e. I'm married for 5 years etc., I lived in Florida every year of my life with basically the exception of 1-2 years). Anything that they might not know that you want them too is how I took it.

Oh ok. gotcha. Thanks!

I know some of these answers for certain, but not all of them, so I'll take a stab and let someone else pick up the rest.

Classes are pass/fail for the first two years and are graded for the last two years. I'm not sure if they have the high pass, high pass with honors, etc. You don't actually have to attend lectures because they are posted online, but there are small group discussions, labs, and patient interactive sessions that are required.

I believe you get a month off to study for Step 1. We actually register for a course specifically for that purpose. People that go to UF tend to do well on Step 1, but remember that the average Step 1 score for a program is the average of all of the students' self reported scores, so it can be misleading if students inflate their scores.

The question was mostly answered already, but I'll add that we have a true pass/fail (so no high pass/nearly pass stuff) in the first two years. You get to know your class standing (for example, 75th percentile), but it is just for your information. At least, that's my recollection of what was said during the interview/second look day. 🙂

What to do if I don't remember when I took my SAT/ACT or the breakdown of the score? I know what my composite was but not sure about the breakdown 🙁

Good question. Are you a UF student? If so, I can tell you how to look this up. Otherwise, if you can't figure it out, maybe shoot an email to admissions. I can't imagine that your SAT or ACT score is really important at this point.

Thanks but I went to the registrar office of my university and got it from them. I am glad they could provide it to me. The secondary application asked for it.

That's good news. I've never understood the point of a pass/fail system that incorporates three different levels of "pass". That to me is just A, B, and C.

How long did it take your letters to be received? I submitted on Monday and my letters have been in since my primary was verified

Not really sure, but I believe my letters were already received before I got the secondary. My primary was submitted and verified sometime in the beginning of June. UF secondary was submitted ~2 days ago.

Ah, that's so fast! My letters still aren't marked as received by them so I guess I can't expect anything until then. Weird.

Congratulations, though! That's awesome.

Mine are not either, I contacted them and they said they had no letters in queue. So I called AMCAS, and they told me to call UF back and ask them to check with UF's AMCAS rep. I think the interwebs have gone wild over in Gainesville!

Anyone know how we submit updates on the secondary application? All I see is the save button and it says that we can't revise content that's already been submitted but apparently I can change anything.

I submitted my secondary on Monday as well, and my letters were assigned through AMCAS before. The UF status page still doesn't show them as received though 🙁

I would call!

I called, they are having problems with letters not going thru from AMCAS. They are in contact with their (UF's) AMCAS rep. Hope to have a resolution soon. I have been talking to them about this for a week, so at least now they know there is an issue and working towards resolution. Don't panic guys, I know some II's have gone out, but we will get complete someday also.

The interweb's are indeed wild over in Gainesville.

Can anybody comment on the integrity essay? The one that asks about the three parts of integrity. Any thoughts on what to write for this essay? Thanks!

So I was looking at the MSAR, and it states that 51% of med students who attend UF COM also attended UF for undergrad 😱 Isn't this abnormally high?

Actually, this wouldn't surprise me UF probably values its students alittle more. Yeah its high.

Edit: REL informed me I was misinformed about UCF and its students. Sorry guys, didn't mean to pass out false info.

I wouldn't necessarily say that it is UFCOM that prefers UF undergrads. Judging by the conversations with my future classmates, it is actually UF students who are more likely to choose to go to the medical college at UF. You won't believe how much school pride there is! 🙂

I do not remember exactly where it was, but I think at the end of the application (maybe in the additional information section?) there was a place to submit your update. Look through the last year's thread, I remember there was a question about updates too.

Letters marked as received, application complete! Wee! C'mon, UF, show me the looove.

I am OOS (TN), but my dad grew up in Florida, went to school there, and his entire side of the family lives there. Is that enough of a connection to apply to UF or would I be wasting my money?

That is a direct connection with your dad graduating. I think that you should.

References finally in, I assume that means the other 793 applicants who had reference missing got them as well...

Anyone else's have an exclamation point next to letters of references even when my references were received last week (and it says this on my application status)?

I wouldn't assume that this indicates a UF COM bias towards UF undergrads. If you look at other Florida schools through the MSAR, you're likely to find that the highest percentage of the student body has completed their undergrad at UF. This trend simply occurs because UF tends to produce the most pre-meds out of all the colleges in Florida.

There is truth to this (though I haven't looked at all the stats for all the schools). When I interviewed at UCF they had about the same proportion of matriculates from UF. There are lots of Gator pre meds.
