2014-2015 University of Hawaii Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
In state, second year applying. First year rejected with 25 (8,8,9)MCAT (got all 3 interviews). Spent the rest of the year raising my MCAT score, managed a 29 (11,8,10). Chemistry degree at UH Manoa 3.79 GPA, went to Kahuku HS, born and raised on the North Shore of Oahu. Caucasian. wait listed, hoping this year I get into JABSOM.

For those that were accepted or wait listed, do you mind posting your stats and details.. Hoping that I'm not too far down on the waitlist

I haven't logged on in a while but I'm IS and was accepted on Feb 27th! I was completely shocked when I found out, especially because I wasn't expecting a decision until Mid-march. I'm so excited to get started and meet all my classmates!

By the way, has anyone heard any info about the start of the school year? I haven't been very attentive to hawaii.edu emails so I could have easily missed something...like how do people know when the white coat ceremony is? Or when that 50th anniversary gala is?

You should have gotten the matriculation email today. It explains everything. Lots to fill out.
Congrats! See you in July.

BTW there is a JABSOM classified Facebook page that is a good resource for books, supplies, and even housing sometimes.

IS, 1st year applying, sub-30 MCAT, lower GPA than yours. Biology degree at west coast college, graduated from public HS on Oahu. Hapa Japanese.

I hope this helps, I didn't want too give too much info about myself, but as you can see it's clearly not about the numbers at JABSOM. I felt that a distinguishing part of my application was my passion for geriatric care and my involvement with the medical school (attended the MS4 geriatric rotation PBL sessions, did a summer shadowing program at Kapiolani with 3rd year JABSOM students, etc.) I also emphasized in my interviews my interest in the IM residency and geriatric fellowship in Hawaii.

Congratulations! School year starts July 13, white coat ceremony is the 17th, gala is the 18th. If it's not on the matriculation packet, check out the events calendar at http://jabsom.hawaii.edu/events/

Latest on waitlist movement??
..I know there's a few of you that check this thing 15 times a day. Haha

Post May 8th.. Latest on waitlist movement anyone?? Heard anything?

Late as well to this thread. I was accepted in January! Basic stats if you're wondering-

IS, first year applying, cGPA 3.5, sGPA 3.4, MCAT 35. Attended liberal arts college in California and a private high school in Hawaii.

Good look to those on the waitlist :]

I've been reading along on this thread, but I never made an account till now.

I'm IS, first year applying, and on the waitlist.

One of my friends got in off the waitlist on April 2nd. I know of two other people that got off the wait list sometime during the first week of May. So there is some movement! Hopefully it makes its way down to me 🙂

Hii I'm trying to figure out where to apply this year and I was thinking about applying here. Can anyone who was accepted OOS tell me their stats if they won't mind I can't figure out how to judge it from the MSAR since they just give an average

Aloha-
I'm not OOS, but it's been a couple days since you asked so I thought I'd help out. JABSOM screens for secondaries on a point scale. I don't have the numbers off hand, but if you search previous years of the school specific threads, it'll be there. The scale for OOS is higher because of the larger applicant pool and small amount of OOS slots (over 1k applicants for 8 spots).
I wish you the best of luck with your cycle.

I know this is quite late to ask, but does anyone happen to know if JABSOM is willing to tell you what areas you can improve in to strengthen your application for the next cycle? I thought I heard from one of the medical students on my tour that I could do that, but I just wanted to ask first.

OOS, I was accepted with an early acceptance in mid-November. 38/3.75. I had some ties to Hawaii, though. Absolutely LOVED jabsom, for what it's worth.

Any OOS students that are currently going there care to talk about the tuition costs? I'm considered OOS but lived in Hawaii for 2 years after college while working in a service program so I have obvious ties to the state. However, I'm worried about the tuition there. Is any assistance at all given? Do any IS applicants have any knowledge about this?

Hey sorry to revive an old thread, but I was wondering if any of you attended the PBL curriculum orientation and if so, what the attire was. Thanks

I went last year. I dressed up business casual for the event, and honestly I was one of the better-dressed ones there. The medical students were in T-shirts and jeans. You do have the opportunity to meet adcom members at the event, so you might want to make a good impression by dressing up, but I would say it doesn't matter overall.

Can't say I did this personally, but one of my classmates got advice from Dr. Nip-Asano on how to improve his application, and got in on the following cycle. It definitely doesn't hurt to ask.

IS, but practically all OOS are on student loans, like the rest of us. If by assistance you mean scholarships, then the answer is no - unless you are native Hawaiian, maybe. But I have no information on that. OOS tuition is insane, I agree.

Hi lil sunshine,

I was wondering how important it was to attend one of the PBL demos before applying/interviewing. I just learned of them now and I don't think I would have the opportunity to attend one this year (working in Madison, WI right now). I'm a Hawaii resident, so I'm applying to JABSOM this cycle.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Hi Goldentide,

Do you have an understanding of PBL? You will most likely be asked this during interviews. PBL is a wake-up call for a lot of people who have not ever had that particular learning style in undergrad, and they want to make sure you have an idea of what you're getting into.

That being said, there are a lot of my current classmates who did not attend the PBL sessions, and some of them had only a very general idea of what PBL was when we started.

So in response to your question, attending the PBL demos is absolutely not necessary. Will it help to attend? Yeah, sure! I wrote about attending the PBL demos in my secondaries. Did it help me get in? I have no idea.

If you have any questions about the PBL process, feel free to PM me and I can give you a quick overview.
