2014-2015 University of Illinois Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
the school campus is huge- always lots of people in the quad, lots of frats and sorority housing etc. There really isn't any barriers separating the school from the surrounding community so you see many non students as well. The medical school staff are amazing people, very open door policy, this includes the professors. Due to the MSP program in Urbana not many traditional MD's get to stay here, I think only 13, the rest of us will be going to Peoria or Rockford.
Thank you so much.

Hi guys, I am a re-applicant here. I applied last year and was invited for interview but couldn't attend it. So, I withdrew my application. But I haven't received an invite for even secondary application yet this year (hopefully it didn't go to spam and got deleted). I was verified on Aug 6th. Can anyone please explain their policy on reapplication? Thanks in advance.

I am a reapplicant (70 lizzy) with a different application from last year interviewing in a couple weeks, submitted early and got an II on their first pass of my application (assuming). I did interview last year though and was rejected, so i didn't withdraw like you did.

From guessing, they may be wondering why you didn't even interview and just withdrew your app, unless you gave a reason and (assuming again) weren't able to work out a solution with them. But this is just a personal story and opinion.

II .. earliest date is Dec 2nd

Does this mean I'm interviewing for the waitlist?

Thanks for your response. I didn't specify any particular reason when I withdrew last year. I did say I look forward to applying next year.
Do you think it would be appropriate to email the admissions office about it?

Anyone else who haven't received secondary invite yet?

II just now!! YAY!!

There's no Chicago dates left through the rest of year though, guys. :/

II yesterday
Complete 8/26
LizzyM 69
IS

There is only one interview date left for the year!

How long of a wait is expected after the "applicant in progress" designation?

Also, anyone else applying to the RMED program?

Interviewing at the Peoria campus in a couple of weeks. Does anybody know if the interviews are open or closed file? Also is there a good source that clearly breaks down the differences between the four campuses? Thank you!

I actually got asked by my interviewer if I knew what the differences were and she didn't blame me for not knowing. I'll try to recall as much as I can:

Chicago - Urban focused. Largest cohort of medical students from the entering class. Have the possibility of shadowing at 20+ hospitals during your clinical experience. Houses the UMED and GMED programs I believe.

Champaign/Urbana - Where the other half of the entering medical class goes before they either stay or split off to Rockford and Peoria. Not much of difference between the Champaign and Chicago campus besides location and most likely fewer hospitals to have clinical experience in.

Rockford: Focused on rural primary care. Mainly for people who are interested in the RIMSAP or RMED programs.

Peoria: Same as the Rockford campus with respect to rural care. Have a brand new simulation lab that was donated by a patient's family, which I have heard is absolutely amazing!

Hopefully this is somewhat helpful, but she acknowledge that school doesn't do a great job at differentiating the campuses. Good luck at your interview!

Technically open file, but my interviewers were fairly honest about the fact that they didn't have a chance to look my file over so I'd recommend emphasizing many of the points in your application that you'd want them to know.

And the school website is a good source. Includes a good description of each campus

Has anyone else had "applicant in progress" as their status for 6 weeks? My app has been complete since 8/22. I'm starting to lose hope :/

I've been in progress since 8/19. No use in losing hope if they haven't even picked up the app yet. Better yet, just think of it as them saving the best for last .

people with interviews: how long were you under the 'applicant in progress' designation

Differences among the 4 campuses:

Chicago is the campus most people know the most about, so I won't touch on it much here. Diverse hospital system for your clinical years, although the downside of this can be having to adjust to several hospital systems. Big advantage is having residencies (and therefore research) in fields the other 3 campuses don't have (e.g. ophtho).

Urbana: where all the non-Chicago students spend their M1 year. Roughly 50 move on to Peoria for their M2-M4 years, 50 to Rockford, and the rest (usually MD/PHDs) stay in Urbana. City-wise, Urbana is the 2nd most fun city after Chicago - a complete campustown. The medical building in Urbana is tiny, old, and mildly depressing. The hospital system is probably weaker than Peoria's in terms of case exposure. Fewer residency programs than Peoria. While it can be tempting to want to stay for the city, unless you have legitimate reasons (e.g. spouse in Urbana that cannot relocate), I would not recommend staying in Urbana for all 4 years.

Peoria: state of the art simulation center, although how much of that will impact you is debatable. It's a new feature, so they're still working out how to incorporate it more into the curriculum. M2 faculty are hit or miss, like anywhere else. Several years ago, they used to be a lot more lecture-heavy than the other campuses; this has changed. There's more uniformity across the campuses, and Peoria M2's get roughly the same time off per week to study as the other students. Historically, their claim to fame was having the highest Step 1 scores among the 4 campuses; I have no idea if this is still true, and even if it is, the difference is likely negligible. Strong clinical faculty and teaching, a very relaxed and positive atmosphere in the hospital during most clinical rotations. Fairly large feeder population ensures a fair mixture of case diversity. A huge advantage is having residency programs in many common fields. The ED residency in particular is strong (great exposure for students on this rotation), and rads/IR is strong as well; they've also begun creating IM sub-specialty fellowships (cards, GI). Fairly boring city overall, not much to do.

Rockford: no residents here, which means as rotating students you may get more hands on, but you may also lose out on early exposure to a true academic setting. However many Rockford students spend their M4 years rotating at Chicago hospitals (which do not count as aways for Rockford students only), and they can make up some of that experience then. Supportive administration. While they have programs designed to guide those who want to go into primary care, a common misconception is that this campus is only for primary care. Once you take a look at their match lists, you'll realize how foolish this is. They have an excellent track record of matching into competitive specialties.

Peoria and Rockford strike me as sort-of a coin flip. Most students end up going where most of their friends are going. There's differences, but unless you have a clear idea of your specific educational goals, you'd be splitting hairs trying to figure out which campus is best for you. At the end of the day your residency application will depend on you more than the campus.

So during my September interview, they told us we would for sure hear back by "the end of october."

For anyone else that's interviewed, do you think we could hear back October 15th? And last question I promise haha, does anyone know if they send acceptances by phone, email or snail mail?

Pretty sure we interviewed on the same day haha from what I know, its all by snail mail and I imagine that they will mail them out on the 15th since they can't really calculate how long a letter would take to reach you.

Does this school offer student hosts if you're at the other sites for an interview?

I asked about this when scheduling my interview and was informed that I had to call the individual site (so if you are interviewing in Peoria then you need to call the admissions office there). I thought that was a bit weird but I guess the campuses operate pretty independently.

Since 7/10 ish? That was when I submitted and I think it went immediately to "Applicant in Progress" and only changed last week when I received my II.
Congrats on the II, would you mind sharing your stats? I've been in progress since 8/22 and I'm starting to lose hope :/

Don't be discouraged! I'm a reapplicant this season and I know how tough it is. I don't like to share exact stats because I really don't think they're the end all be all of getting into medical school but if it helps others to know, my GPA is less than average for UIC (like around the 10th percentile) and my MCAT is higher.

EDIT: I also have a wide variety of ECs and come from an unusual background (non-trad) and I included those factors in my application because I think they help me to stand out.

No problem, are you IS?

i wonder when we'll start hearing back post-interview... starting to get nervous but also excited!

I've had the status of "applicant in process" since 7/23... does anyone have any insight?

+1 I've been "in progress" for 8 weeks now! Complete mid August.

Just did a chicago interview, and it was pretty laid back with 3 interviewers. For those that have interviews, the adcom meets every 3rd thursday (generally) to decide on acceptances, and they said that people who interviewed today and before today have a high chance of hearing back by the end of oct/early nov, depending on how long snail mail takes.

Guess this means September interviewees should just chillax today?

Yup. Also this:

********************************
START

I. Submit Primary.

II. Wait for the email from UIC giving you your login information for the Applicant Status Check site (usually arrives within 2 weeks of submitting your primary).

III. Login, and check your status in the second page. [At the bottom of this post I link to a program I made that makes checking your status as easy as double clicking your mouse.]

---

A. "Application Not Complete" = Secondary not yet complete.

B. "Application in Process" = You are complete. --> Goto C.

C. "Applicant in Process" = Your file is being reviewed, 3 Possible Status Changes:
1. "Select Interview Date" = You are good enough for an interview. --> Goto D.
2. "Application in Process" = You are not good enough to grant an interview yet, but might be later on in the cycle. Check back periodically. --> Go back to B.
3. "Final Decision Made ..." = You are not good enough. --> Goto X.
D. "Select Interview Date" (A grid of dates shows up) = Call and schedule an interview date, after which "Interview Scheduled on ... " shows up. After the interview, Goto F.

F. "Decision Pending" = File pending review at the next adcom meeting (every 3rd Thursday of the month). There are 2 options from here, depending on the month:
1. Before May. --> Goto M.
2. On or After May. --> Goto N.

M. Before May, 2 Possible Status Changes:
1. "Final Decision Made ... " --> Goto S.
2. "Decision Pending" (No Status Change) + "We'll keep reviewing you" Email (a few days later) = You are a good candidate, but not good enough to grant an acceptance yet. UIC will keep reviewing you at every adcom meeting. --> Go back to F.

N. On or After May, 2 Possible Status Changes:
1. "Final Decision Made ... " You are (very likely) rejected. --> Goto X.
2. "Applicant is Waitlisted" = Waitlisted. --> Goto Y.

S. There are 2 additional conditions from here:
1. There is an "Additional Correspondences" Tab in the upper-right corner on your status page AND you get a CBC Email (a few days later) = You are (very likely) accepted. --> Goto Z.
2. There is no "Additional Correspondences" Tab and/or you don't get the CBC Email = Rejection. [Note: This is tricky. The CBC email usually comes a few days after (1-4 is the consensus) the status change. Be patient. Sometimes, the email never comes, which might be because you already had a CBC done due to an acceptance at another school. In some instances, the CBC Email even comes after the snail-mail. If after a week, neither the tab nor the CBC email shows up, it's very likely a rejection. You've probably already received snail-mail by now alerting you to it.] --> Goto X.

X. "Final Decision Made ..." = Rejection ... Wait for a "Thin Letter" via snail-mail.

Y. "Applicant is Waitlisted" = Waitlisted. ... The CBC Email no longer acts as an indicator of an acceptance. If you get accepted off of the waitlist, then Goto Z, else Goto X.

Z. "Final Decision Made ..." + "Additional Correspondences" Tab + CBC Email = (very likely) Acceptance ... Wait for a "Fat Packet" via snail-mail. [Note: Sometimes CBC emails come after the packet. CBC emails also might never arrive if you got an acceptance to another school that also does CBC through AMCAS.]

FINISH

*** NOTE: There are no guarantees in the above information, since there is always the chance that UIC changes things up. Just always keep in mind that the above is of what has happened, and not what will happen.

According to a complex series of calculations I just ran, tomorrow is the third Thursday of the month ;p

For those that have interviewed, should we expect some sort of status change then?

And good luck to everyone applying here! Hopefully we'll all be classmates next year 🙂

completed 8/10..applicant still in progres.....probably should expect a silent rejection

For people that interviewed, are your statuses just "evaluation not complete?"

mine is also "evaluation not complete" :/ was there a chance of it changing today?

Woah interesting. I'll have to give them a call I guess

maybe it just hasn't been reviewed yet? I hope I don't have to wait another 4+ weeks to find out! I'm so nervous/excited. Let us know what they tell you if you call.
