2014-2015 University of Illinois Application Thread

And I am extremely confused by this. Their chicago campus is packed already, and none of the other places have as many people slots... do they have that big a turnover?

I think one thing to consider also is that out of state tuition is pretty high for this school, so they may be anticipating a certain amount of people withdrawing upon getting acceptances elsewhere. Just speculation. :eyebrow:

Don't get your hopes up. Since you are really late, you will more than likely need stellar stats to catch their eye. Other people have told me to tone it down, but it's without saying that since it's rolling admissions, your chances of acceptance is exponentially lower than if you interviewed in the fall.

If you're not on the admissions committee, you shouldn't be making this statement. If you have an interview, you have a chance to get in. It's possible it will be via wait list, or you may get your last campus choice, but IF you have an interview, you have a fair chance to get in. Schools don't waste their time interviewing people they won't take (assuming the interview goes well).

Admissions are a difficult process for everyone. I have been in your position before. However, your negativity only stifles productive discussion on this thread. And it makes people who have late interviews worry unnecessarily.

And once you interview, your stats don't mean as much. If you get an interview invite, they already like you on paper.

I have two friends that are current M1's at the Chicago campus, where one interviewed in late-January and the other mid-February. They also were accepted to UIC's UMED program, so that required them to be in Chicago. People get in and get in all campuses this time of year.

Your outlook is not backed by anything other then your feelings or something you "heard." People get in this late and your claims, of how dire the situation, are not helping anyone. If you are just going to be negative please refrain from posting.

... anyone have any other advice on how to get them to notice me last minute?... again I'm in state and went to UIUC undergrad and have 3.7/36 and have heard nothing from them.

What about going to your undergrad counselor to review your application? Sounds like you have good stats, so another set of trained eyes might help the process.

What do you mean by that exactly? Like ask an undergrad counselor to try to draw attention to my app? I contacted my pre-med adviser already and she told me she contacted an admissions officer who would be following up with me, but that was last Thursday and I still haven't heard back.

No, for your pre med counselor to look at your app to see if it was missing something. Sounds like you're already going down that path. Good luck to you!

I understand. It's just that my interview in February, though pleasant, gave me the impression that I was not really cared about. I got grilled on why I wanted to do medicine, and I don't feel like I left that good of an impression.

MOST IMPORTANTLY, I was interviewed by a med student and some random person that's not even in the UIC faculty. So it greatly concerns me that my interview feedback is based upon people not officially in the ad com. Not that I don't respect them, but they do not impart in me a feeling of confidence that my interview was taken seriously.

I may just be bitter.

I don't know what you expect from an interview day. What does being "cared about" entail? I interviewed in February and the day went just fine. To be honest, people's moods are greatly influenced by the weather in Chicago, so if everyone was a little low energy, it could just be the mid-winter blues. As a Chicagoan, I can tell you this is a very real phenomenon.

Everyone gets asked why they want to be a doctor. Have you done any interview prep with professors or hospital administration? You need to have a semi-rehearsed answer that provides information leading to the follow-up questions you WANT to answer. This is how to control the conversation from the beginning. If you feel like you are being grilled, then that means you have not thoroughly prepared for the "why medicine?" question. There are also endless resources on the web for interview prep.

Your interview with a "random" person is probably the least important issue (the most important being your preparedness). These can often be the easiest interviews, because you can talk about what YOU care about. These interviewers usually just want to know that you're a normal person who can talk to other people and formulate intelligent thoughts on the fly. Interviews aim to gauge how you respond to various questions and situations, and they test your resilience in a high pressure professional/semi-formal social setting. They require a great deal of confidence (fake it til you make it) and a little bit of humility. If you've got social grace, that's a plus. Your interviewers want to like you. But they can't if you're wrapped up in your own head with expectations and preconceived notions about your candidacy. You should shift your focus away from what you expect from the school and more towards how you can wow the school. It's not about what they can do for you (ie how they show they "care" or who you interview with), but rather what you can offer as an eager candidate.

Lastly, if you felt, by the end of your interview day, that you were not taken seriously, it's possible that you were projecting your own negativity on the situation. Unfortunately, it's also possible that this negativity came through in your behavior.

An interview opportunity is wasted on someone who goes into it with a negative mindset. It's such a precious, coveted spot, whether it's in october or march.

Good Luck.

On the admissions committee, an evaluation is an evaluation, regardless of who the submitter is -- just like how a patient is a patient; regardless of who they are treated the same. That is the thinking of a doctor. You may not think you're being disrespectful, but you are by thinking that UICOM would have a reason to consider them as less important. Many schools actually consider the student opinion the most important, since they want applicants who will fit in with the community!

It sounds like you had a normal interview experience but interpreted things the wrong way...you need to become more optimistic if you want to survive this application cycle, nevermind med school, with some shred of sanity. Negativity is dangerous for you and the future patients you might have. I hope things work out better in the long run.

This wait though...I'm making all my friends annoyed from my anxiety and neediness..dangit lol they'll have to deal

Got my pre-II rejection letter in the mail the other day. IS, LizzyM ~70, nontrad with unique experiences.

Not upset, though - I've been in Chicago for so many years already that I'm looking forward to a change. Good luck, everyone!

Sorry to hear, Bert. 🙁 Best of luck with the other schools! Know I'm rootin' for you on other threads 😉

Does anyone happen to have the email to send application updates?

UPDATE: Nevermind! I got it. Email: [email protected]

They don't accept updates.

I was just talking to an admissions counselor, he said there will be interviews through the end of march and possibly even into April. Still hope.

Oh ok, thanks for the heads up! Yes, hope is key. Sending good vibes to you and everyone else still waiting for interview invites.

Woah in the mail pre-II? Dang that is some deceiving use of postage haha. Well good luck to you in the rest of this process!! 🙂

Did the portal say "Final Decision"?

Interviewed 2/18, status just changed from "interview scheduled, evaluation not complete" to "decision pending". March adcom meeting cannot come soon enough....

Interviewed on 2/26 and status changed to "decision pending". Do you know when they will meet next? I am assuming third Thursday is 3/19. Good luck though and hope something good will come out of this since I almost died of cold while attending the interview!

I interviewed on 3/4 in Chicago, I disregarded Theeseesit's negative posts and went in there with a positive attitude. I felt that it couldn't have gone any better. 2/3 interviewers were med students who were extremely engaging, and the last was with the director of the Diversity program. I definitely didn't get the impression that they could care less, but like Subway Monster said it's all in your mindset which goes hand in hand with how you present yourself. Anyways, they said that the ADCOM meeting was a little later this month, (they didn't say when) so don't be surprised if you don't see a status change immediately. Hang in there!

Really glad to hear! I interviewed in 2/18, and I thought they were okay.

That being said..I don't think it's very nice to call people out...theseesit had already stopped posting for days.

Does anyone know if they are receptive to pre-II updates? Tried emailing the director of admissions, never got a reply...

What's the turnaround rate for site placements? Do you get them in the mail? Also, are they dependent on whether they receive your Hep B and transcript info?

It is my understanding that site placement gets assigned via mail 2 weeks from deposit. Transcripts and immunization can be submitted later. Can any current students or those further along in the process confirm this?

Called admissions today. No site assignment letters have been sent out yet (for feb meeting acceptances).

So I feel kind of silly asking this, but did the Facebook group for the Class of 2019 disappear or is it just me? I really want to start getting to know people/finding potential roommates!

No, you're definitely right - a friend of mine already in it said the same thing!

I'm on the Urbana-Peoria track, and I just called Student Affairs at Urbana. They will be creating a Facebook group for the UPR (Urbana-Peoria-Rockford) Class of 2019 in mid-April. At that time, they are also hoping to update the Incoming Students information found at this link, http://www.med.illinois.edu/students/m1/incoming/. Am I the only one who is getting anxious for information about orientation and registration? !

Ok UIC, about a month ago I changed to "Application is in Process". I was told I should hear something in a few weeks. Tomorrow would be wonderful. Archer and Lana have a mission in Chicago in two weeks and Ms. Archer said Ray and I could tag along.

That has been my status for about 5 months... I wouldn't count on anything.

I interviewed in December, acceptance came 2 weeks later on a friday. I hand delivered the site placement card and deposit the following monday. Got my top choice placement a week later (Chicago!!). I have not received any correspondence yet about immunizations/tests/transcripts nor have I preemptively sent anything.

Speaking of which, when do we have to handle those requirements?

M4 here -- the decision to start a UIUC medical school will impact the incoming 2019 class. More official information to come, as discussions are still occurring. (Sorry to be vague... But big changes might be coming, and I am very upset the school community and incoming class has gotten very little notice). The student councils will push to make sure all incoming students know asap the exact changes.
