2014-2015 University of Illinois Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does anyone know if the "Additional Correspondence" tab could also mean being moved to the wait list? Has anyone with the tab been anything but accepted historically?

If it says they made a final decision on your application, that's it. You'll either be getting a rejection or acceptance letter in the mail. Looking through last years thread it seems they don't even start making a wait list until may, and it was all people who were strung along the whole way with "decision pending" statuses. So stalk your mail man (or lady) this week or two and get the libations ready for either celebration or defeat. Good luck!

Are all decisions received by mail? No email?

Yes it seems all normal decisions come via the pony express, after they phased out the carrier pigeon system 5 years ago. Except several people in last year's thread got a personal phone call telling them they were accepted off the waitlist before they got mail correspondence.

Thanks for the info!

I'll make sure to keep checking my mailbox!

Hey guys! I have been accepted to the champaign/rockford track (not rmed) and was wondering if there is a place to find/get to know potential roommates in champaign? Sorry if this has already been answered!

Does anyone from the admissions committee answer their email? I've tried emailing Dr. Girotti a couple of times to no avail...

Have you tried the admissions office? During the interview, we were told to direct all questions/concerns to the admissions office. I don't think the interviewees were even given the direct contact information for the admissions committee.

I think MDHime is aware of that, but she wants to see if there's anything else she can do as she probably thinks she'll get a generic "wait and see" answer from the admissions office? Just speculating.

Thank you Hippogriff and Theeseesit for your responses! It is as the latter says, I was trying to see if there was anything more I could do and was wondering if anyone has had any luck emailing specific admissions officers, but it seems like I'm not going to get a reply regardless (at least not any time soon ._.)

I'm so anxious...my girlfriends are all so annoyed bc I can't relax during our movie nights. This is torture, and venting on sdn is the best alternative I can think of

Sorry if this has been answered before

I know the committee meets once a month. Do they review all files "up for review" on that single day? Or are the revisited by other members of admissions for a few weeks?

Omg. Urbana student here just moved to the Chicago campus. I guess all Urbana students will be moved because of the new medical school.

What? More info please.
I was placed in Urbana but they moved me to the Chicago campus because they're unsure what would happen to us there now that UIUC created their own medical school. People with just m1 in Urbana will not be moved.

I wonder if this means that there will be fewer total people accepted this year? Or if they will just expand the class sizes in the other campuses to accommodate the shuffling around of the Urbana students? I'm sincerely hoping it's the latter.

It's possible. You could ask the dean of admissions.

I'm concerned this will screw up site change appeals for those of us who want to be placed in Chicago.

It's not April 1st for a few more hours where I'm at! 😛 haha

Could you post excerpts of the message you got perhaps? They seemed pretty sure that the Urbana students wouldn't be affected this year, at least M1 (especially since the new medical school is nowhere near opening right now) and it's odd that Rockford/Peoria ones wouldn't be moved elsewhere for M1. It's not to throw doubt on your post, I'm just honestly curious.

They called me and let me choose one of the other campuses to attend. They just said that if I chose Peoria or Rockford, I would still spend my M1 year at urbana/champaign. They said they just wanted to make the changes now even though they don't know when the new school is going to open so they wouldn't have to disrupt anybody's studies later on in their education. They didn't say anything about whether they would do something different with the M1 year for the not-chicago campuses in future years.

Thanks I was starting to feel like I was crazy lol.

Yeah they seem to have changed their minds. I had been in contact with quite a few people at UIC over the past few weeks because I was told that I would not be able to transfer into the MD PhD program in Urbana due to the fact that they are transitioning to their own medical school. With all of this in mind though I am very glad that the school is looking out for us!

which campus did you choose?

Haha, you're not crazy yet. I actually haven't told them yet. I asked to go to urbana/champaign. U of I has a really good program for what my wife wants to study, and so I asked if I could talk it over with her and let them know tomorrow. We'll see what happens.

Peoria isn't that far away from Champaign if they won't let you stay in Champaign. 🙂

That's pretty terrible news for anyone that's still "Decision Pending." It basically amounts to the # of Urbana slots being subtracted from the total # of slots available at the other 3 locations. I suppose it's possible that UIC will try to cram the number of students that usually fit into N campuses into N-1 campuses, but I think it's more likely that they will simply elect to give out fewer than usual number of additional acceptances beyond this point.

Well that sucks 🙁

I was thinking the same thing initially but it's also possible that they'll just try to cram everyone in because that seems like a lot of tuition $$ that they will be standing to lose. Maybe I'm just being overly optimistic but I guess we'll see!

I'm inclined to agree with this logic but nobody will know unless someone asks the dean of admissions. I don't think they're going to overcrowd their other campuses too much because it could potentially cause issues with accreditation and resources.

Anyone know how common it is for UIC to keep people at Decision pending for a long time only to reject them? Been at Decision Pending since a mid-January interview 🙁

I don't know how common it is but it happens.

I think it's more common than not. I'm in the same boat fyi. I think what happens after an interview is you fall into one of 3 buckets:

1. They like you enough to give you a seat. I think around half of interviewees get acceptances so this is the largest group.

2. They really can't stand you and reject you out of hand without even bothering to see what else is coming down the applicant pipeline. This is the smallest group and happens rarely.

3. You're decision pending, the second largest group. In my mind, that means in an ideal world they don't want you in their school, but the world is not ideal so they want to see whether there are enough "perfect" applicants still down the pipeline to fill their class before they officially reject you. If they get through the whole interview process without finding enough perfect candidates, they'll begrudgingly reach into the "decision pending" pool to fill up that petty-cash cup with your tuition and happily reject the rest with a "whew! only had to take in 15 decision-penders this year! Pop the Champagne brahs!"

But that's just my take on it. As the hodge twins might say, "Think whatever the Fuk! you wanna think."

A better (and probably more realistic) way of looking at #3 is that there are so many qualified people out there that they have to make some tough decisions. They did decide to interview you after all.
