2014-2015 University of Miami (Miller) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
so probably know the answer already but i'm so afraid to leave a question unanswered, even if it is optional.
i played piano and mallet percussion until I came to college. I'll occasionally play piano for friends and family at home, but no legit involvement in an arts group at school. i should probably just go ahead and leave it blank, right?

I'd put it in... just don't overstate it to make it seem like you're still super active if you're not.

No, talk about it. It doesn't have to be anything crazy. I talked about a minor interest in something and just explained what I like about it.

Does anyone know if Miami is a school that's very committed to it's community's health? Like Boston or UVa or something-- where a lot of the hospital's/school's resources go towards serving the needs of a lot of people (like a safety net hospital). I'm just trying to find more stuff to talk about "Why Miami" and Miami's programs are really cool, I just don't think the programs I know about currently would be sufficient to write this essay. Thanks!

I don't know if this answers your question, but Jackson Memorial is a county hospital and definitely part of the safety net

So the secondary first asks "Have you applied previously for admission to the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine?". And then it asks "If you applied previously, describe how you have strengthened your candidacy since your last application?". If I am a re-applicant but did not apply to Miami Miller before, do you think I should answer the second question? I don't want to bring up my re-applicant status if I don't have to, but I REALLY don't want them to think my application hasn't changed since my last cycle.

Can any current Miami students elaborate on special opportunities at the school, or things they really like about the U?

For anyone looking into MD/MPH, how are you handling the question about describing any experience you may have had in public health? I feel like a lot of experiences are already written on my AMCAS, should I list them in further detail here? I feel as if that's terribly redundant.
Also, does the MD school look at my MPH essays too? I'm wondering how much information I can repeat.
Thanks!

How are you guys structuring your chronological lists?

Just highlight different specific experiences in the MD/MPH essay. Emphasize the public health part of it and give specific stories that you couldn't fit in the AMCAS description.

I would not repeat information from the MD essays onto the MD/MPH essays. I think there's a good chance it would be noticed and looked down upon.

How are you guys structuring your chronological lists?

I just made a bullet-point list. With the number of essays Miller is requiring, they aren't going to guilt me into repeating short descriptions of EVERY ACTIVITY I have done that are already on my AMCAS.

Is anyone writing close to 500 words for each essay? I don't think I'll have that much to say, especially since I don't want my answers to be too repetitive of my primary.

im b/w 150 and 300

Submitted this monster secondary. It all ended up being like 6 pages single spaced with the MD/MPH essays included.

So the instructions in the PDF they sent say to send a photograph with "Application Photograph" in the subject line, but when you submit, the status page says to say, "Application Photograph and AMCAS #" in the subject line. Just FYI.

Hmm..I sent in the photo first assuming they wanted us to do that before submitting the secondary (given the order on the pdf), so I just wrote "Application Photograph" in the subject line and included my name and AMCAS number in the body of the email as identifiers. I don't think it really matters as long as you include both pieces of information somewhere since they'll have to open the email to get the photo anyway 😛

Does anyone know how strict Miami is about the biochem requirement? I did 2 semesters of orgo+lab and have lots of upper-level bio courses but no legit biochem class. Def don't want to write all these essays if I'm already out of contention!

They require the o-chem on top of the biochem I believe. I imagine if they were not going to be strict about the requirement they would list it as strongly recommended, versus required (which is how they state it).
Shoot the admissions office a quick call though if you want to be 100%. Never hurts.

It's definitely a requirement, but you don't need to have it completed by now. I'm taking it this upcoming school year, and you could take it over next summer if need be.

Finally submitted!!! Wow that is a huge load off my shoulders...

For classes that you received AP credit, what did you under the "Grade" column?

About to write the why Miami question but their website doesn't seem to be working. I guess it's a sign I should go to sleep.

Just submitted. Applied MD and MD/MPH. Really like the school! Definitely glad I pre wrote most of these...

For the chronological list, did you guys just use bullet point?

the instructions say to include a "brief description" fyi! I erred on the side of VERY brief aka one sentence each 🙂
Me too. And I only included a description if it hadn't been previously described in my AMCAS. Hopefully they are ok with that...

WHOOPS....i guess the location where i volunteered is brief enough 🙁

I'd also like to know the answer to this question

I just stated that although I didn't apply to Miller, I was a re-applicant and gave the usual spiel on changes since my last cycle. Better safe than sorry and I feel secure with my additions.

For the hobbies, fine arts, etc., did you just put descriptions or more essay-like? I have a nice like 250 words fine arts essay from another secondary, but I don't know if this is supposed to be more of a straight up description

wait, where does it say that? All I see is "Please provide a chronological list with dates of your community service/volunteering."

I don't see anywhere it says to include a brief description?

It says it in the PDF instructions attached to the email. I only looked at it closely after I submitted. Whoops.

I literally just re-listed every activity in my AMCAS with the dates and total hours. No new activities. I wish I didn't miss putting a brief description, tho. But them again, it would be silly for them to reject someone just for this mistake.

How long did it take for the photograph to show up as complete? I'm an idiot and typed Admissions Photograph instead of Application Photograph in the e-mail ... but Idon't want to re-send it yet haha

Mine came up as received this morning. I submitted it on the 11th.

Finally submitted this secondary at the crack of dawn. It took me long enough.
