2014-2015 University of Miami (Miller) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Quick, random question. May seem rhetorical and simple, but I just want to be absolutely sure.

If we have an experience that is clinical volunteering, in my specific example at a hospice house, would you include these dates under the "clinical experiences/shadowing" section or the "community service/volunteering" section? Or both? I feel as if it truly is both, but don't wish to be repetitive and have it count against me.

Thank you very much for your advice.

I had some overlap as well. I would only mention it once.

I put it as volunteering.. but its on AMCAS as "clinical volunteering," so hopefully they can figure it out

How long did it take for the photograph to show up as complete? I'm an idiot and typed Admissions Photograph instead of Application Photograph in the e-mail ... but Idon't want to re-send it yet haha
Mine came up as received this morning. I submitted it on the 11th.

photo received this morning as well!

So happy to be done with this beast of a secondary.

Wait, so what counts as a humanities/behavioral science?

humanities = language, religion, philosophy, music, art, etc
behavioral science = anthropology, sociology, psychology, communication, law, etc

How long did it take for you guys to receive the secondary after you got the initial "AMCAS received" email? I am just trying to figure out how to budget my time with writing all these other secondaries...trying to put this one off for as long as possible.

Did any of you guys sort of repeat information in these questions? For example, in writing the secondary, my "fine arts" activity is my most significant student organization activity (heck, it was even one of my top three on the AMCAS). I guess the questions have a slightly different focus, but the content will be mostly the same, I guess. Is this ... alright?

Thanks, man. Was just a bit concerned after some earlier post in this thread about not counting "intro" behavioral science courses (!)

why do I spend a month writing perfect paragraphs about all my activities, only to rewrite them all for schools that can't simply look at the application I spent $1,000 to send them?>>.....

I'm still pissed I forgot to write brief descriptions when listing all my activities again for both clinical experience and nonmedical volunteering. Do y'all think I should email the Admissions Committee and let them know I forgot to do that or just let it go?

i just let it go

I did the same thing and I think I'm just gonna let it go. I'm sure we are not the only ones that did that, considering it's not written right on the application itself. Besides, they DO have our AMCAS. It will be fine 🙂

mine took about a week. I got an email response saying they had received my photo (even without me including my AMCAS ID in the message, oops!!). so hang in there!

I interpret "very brief descriptions" to be a phrase or sentence.
For example,
-University of Washington Healthcare Volunteer
-Ronald McDonald House (in Cleveland, Ohio) Volunteer
-Detroit Symphony (played 1st viola)

I've volunteered at a Ronald McDonald House a few times as a service event for APO. It's fun to cook for people, and they always thank you for it.

submitted! Can't wait to watch Lebron live!........... :heckyeah:

I hope your interpretation is correct because that's what I did 🙂

I compiled my hours and listed them by volunteer activity (chronologically by start month). But I made sure to indicate how often/long I did each activity for.
For all of the "chronological list" questions - did you guys do most recent to least (reverse chronological) or oldest to newest?
I only ask because resumes are typically reverse chronological...

Separate question:

Many of my employment experiences overlap with my clinical experiences, and same for volunteer and clinical. Should I repeat them on each section? If not, how should I divvy it up?

Anyone else have a status change? Looks like my application has been reviewed and scored. Based on last year's thread it looks like people's changed to this before getting an II. Some people's stayed at the 'under review' state for a longer time and it doesn't look like it changed (I didn't read the whole thread). It also sounds like the status emails don't come up as soon as this changes, so you have to check it ever so often.

Is anyone having a problem viewing their status? I entered in my AMCAS ID and date of birth and then pressed enter. Then, the birthdate just automatically gets erased and nothing happens....I tried on two different days and on different browsers.

Yep, I'm having the same problem.

Regular volunteer there, about to work there.. always a fun time 🙂

Oof, totally beginning to experience writer's block with these secondaries :'(

Does anyone know if Miami allows us to send update letters via email to the Admissions Committee or some other format? Or is the interview the only other time we can update them on what we've accomplished this year?

That happened to me until I turned off my pop-up blocker

Are they supposed to contact us that they received our photo? I emailed them 9 days ago and haven't heard anything.

I sent in my photo on 7/11 and it still shows that it hasn't been received but my status says under review...?

Someone above posted that it took about 1 week for their photo to be marked. Maybe you will get a confirmation email on Monday.

Dumb question, but can someone please explain this part of the application instructions pdf: "If you are a Permanent Resident of the United States, you must send a copy of the front and back of your green card to [email protected]"

Is this only for those who were born outside the US?

if you're not a US citizen and live here then you have a green card

On the secondary, do we need to click "Save" after every entry before submitting?

Thanks!

I have tried stopping my ad blocker and have tried on my phone too...but the same thing happens. :/

Hey guys, so IDK if this is what you guys are experiencing, BUT in one of the emails, the link they gave us was the link to check the status for the PREVIOUS year. Make sure you use the email that gave you the instructions--that PDF file has the right link. The other emails gave the wrong link. That should help.

That would explain why it suddenly worked this morning...I probably used the link in the PDF. Thanks 🙂

New status:

"Your Application has been reviewed by the Admissions Committee at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Applicants will be invited to interview based upon their point total from the Admissions Committee review. Applicants who have been reviewed and scored by the Admissions Committee may be notified that they have been selected for an interview between September and April."

:xf:

What did everyone refer to the school as in their secondary? If you didn't use the full name, do you think they prefer "University of Miami" or "Miller School of Medicine"? I could just use the full name, but that seems like a lot.

I initially referred to it by the full name, but afterwards just used "Miller School of Medicine" to save space and help with sentence flow. I noticed that they referred to themselves as Miller School or Miller School of Medicine a couple of times, so I felt comfortable abbreviating it.

For the research question, did you guys talk about your duties in a research lab like "as a research assistant, I cultured X cell lines and was responsible for A B C procedures and wrote sections 1 2 3 in our paper" or did you talk more about "Our project found that C is correlated with D and that there was a strong favorable result in F"

Also for the name I referred it to UMMSM at times and "The Miller School"
