2014-2015 University of Michigan Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Yo guys, is it game over for deferred dec to march ppl?

I thought we woulda found out by Fri...?

Anyone have some insights?

I hope that the admissions committee is waiting to see if more applicants decline their acceptances to free up more seats for the deferred pool. I know a "Deferred to December" applicant that was accepted, and @UMichMedAdmiss has posted before about accepting December deferrals, so acceptance after deferral is definitely possible. But I haven't been able to find any definitive information on the odds of acceptance after a deferral until March.

The full scholarships were already announced last week. There may be other, smaller scholarships, but the Dean's Scholarships have already been handed out.

So is it just merit scholarships coming out by the 20th, or will everyone's whole financial aid package be sent to them including scholarships and grants and loans?

Need-based financial aid packages are separate from the merit scholarship date advertised on Twitter, and will come a bit later on (likely by Second Look Weekend). Non-Dean's Merit full tuition scholarships should be included in the mix of notifications on Friday, but those recipients are not eligible for the additional perks of the DMS program (fully-funded 5th year for a Master's degree, etc). A few students were added to the DMS program at the end of our M1 year following an application/interview process, too, so technically this isn't the only round of scholarships from UMMS if nothing has changed. But short answer is 3/20 will include any range of sign-on bonuses.

Also, as the M4's gear up for Match Day on Friday, I wanted pass along a note that UMMS launched a Residency Match List Searchable Database today, in case this is of interest to anyone with respect to the decision-making process.

An important disclaimer should be made that match placements are driven in large part by student preferences (be it program type (i.e. research focus), geographic location, couples matching, etc), and there are many elaborate discussions about the utility of match lists on SDN (most recently http://forums.studentdoctor.net/thr...-match-lists-among-different-schools.1118871/) , so don't get too caught up in the specifics, but it may be worth taking a brief look since the previously available PDFs just listed everything alphabetically by last name. 2015 matches will be added in the near future.

100% of students who applied to residency from UMMS in 2013-14 matched successfully before the SOAP process, haven't heard this year's numbers yet -- this is probably a more useful comparative statistic anyhow, because a high match rate reflects both student competitiveness as well as top-notch advising.

Do they just email this information out or snail mail?

For current UMMS students, do you think it would be doable/practical to commute 35 mins to campus each way during M1 and M2 years? On average, how many days out of the week require being physically present on campus? I'm just referring to M1 and M2 years.

Do you mean like a 35 minute drive INTO Ann Arbor or like, commuting in from South Campus of Ann Arbor (so like 2-3 miles)? Just curious, because even living, say, on central campus could be a 20 minute commute.

Hi tick_tock400,

I mean commuting into Ann Arbor from a city that's 30 mins away. On average, how many days per week do you think I would need to come to campus during the first two years? This is assuming that I would stream the lectures. Thanks you for answering.

for anybody with a "deferred decision to March" status, I was told by the Admissions Office that decisions will be sent out next week.

Thanks so much for checking, islandbreeze! Did they mention which day next week, or just next week?

I think it depends on the route you're coming in and what city exactly. I know a few people who commute from ~20-25 mile distances to Ann Arbor and they have to leave like 6 AM in the morning (to avoid traffic) and return either really late (like 8 PM or later) or in the afternoon in order to avoid traffic.

In terms of how many days you're going to have to be at campus, I know the university is starting a M-home type thing and more clinical experiences for M1s, so I'm not sure how many days of the week or what times you're going to be there. If I were you, I'd email one of the students or administrators directly sooner, rather than later as apartments really do get rented out relatively quick.

Anyone know about what time the financial aid/ scholarship emails come out tomorrow?

Finally placed on the upper-tier waitlist after months of waiting. Congrats to the rest of you, and good luck at Michigan (or wherever else you decide to attend)!

Has there been any waitlist movement in past years?

On the status page, they listed the number of students accepted off of the wait list in the last several years. No one was accepted off of the waitlist from 2010 to 2014. They said that waitlist movement doesn't follow a trend over the years. However, a lot of acceptances were given out this cycle, so I figure that there's only a tiny chance of waitlist movement, let alone an acceptance for me.

How many scholarships do they give out? / Do they pass down the scholarships if people do not choose to go to Michigan?
According to the info session I attended two years ago, yes.

Dd anyone get a scholarship with a donors name listed with it?
Nopers. They just told me it was worth $160k, and explained that "if" a donor's name was attached I would be required to write annual thank you notes, interact with benefactors, etc.

Yay!!! I got the merit scholarship too! I didn't check my email at all after work and went to bed early... so when I woke up this morning it was an awesome surprise!

Your donor's name will be sent to you in a formal email from the Financial Aid office over the summer sometime (with instructions for sending a thank-you, etc), and many of the donors/alumni return to Ann Arbor for the White Coat Ceremony in August. There's a reception at the Michigan League afterwards where you'll have a chance to meet and thank your donors in person. Really nice that UMMS / Medical Center Alumni Society (MCAS) puts this together.
