2014-2015 University of Nebraska Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Accepted today! Really surprised by this since I'm OOS. Interviewed in October, no ties really to NE, and LizzyM <70.

Edit: Also I remember, I was preliminarily rejected haha, it can happen!

Congrats!! This is awesome news for you!

It makes me think I won't hear anything before Christmas, though! Bummer!

Congrats! When was your interview?
Thanks! I interviewed during October, and since I know someone will want to know, I'm also OOS and have a LizzyM < 70. For those of you who haven't heard back yet, remember that it's still really early and many more acceptances will go out soon!

Thanks for the prompt response @MD Running. Did your status also change on the application portal, or did you just receive a packet in the mail?

My portal's the same as it was before... but depending where you live, I think from here on out you might find out by the background check email before the letter arrives. Looking at past years' threads, I think those emails start going out early January.

It's nice to hear some acceptances are going out!...It does make me more anxious though. Has anyone heard from the October 24th group? Also, is it truly random as far as who gets a decision and when? I think that was sort of mentioned at my interview day but I'm really unsure.

They say its random... But I can't imagine its *actually* random. Like random number generator random.

So I just read the fine print in that the deposit is non-refundable and you have 2 weeks to decide.... This is tough because I do already have another acceptance. Not sure what I'll do, but since I'm OOS, the only way I would come to Nebraska is with a IS tuition waiver, but when do those come out, do we know?

When I interviewed they said that if you were receiving the tuition waiver it would be stated in your acceptance...but I'm not sure that is still accurate. How much is the deposit?

Right I vaguely remember that as well. It's only $100, but still if I could avoid it that'd be nice. Maybe I will call to clarify. Don't get me wrong I'm really excited to be accepted!

From what I remember of the FinAid presentation, most OOS accepted wouldn't know whether they got that waiver until late May-- after you've had to release all other acceptances. I remember feeling slightly claustrophic when the director told us that... :p

From here, it seems as though they are reviewing OOS applicants earlier?

This is such a great exercise for us: Go getter pre-meds deal with something currently out of our hands ; ) Love and luck to you all while we continue to wait, and hope we can find some measure of peace in trusting the process!!!

Keep in mind that from previous years, they only reviewed ~30-40 applicants in the December meeting. Could be completely by chance that the only two of us who posted on SDN were OOS. Far more people will be reviewed shortly!

If you do end up calling, can you let us know what they say? It would be nice to have a timeline for the waiver... I can't remember for sure if they said we would know right away or have to wait till May.

Gigi is on vacation until next week so I will need to check in with her then.

Oh, only 30-40? I know a handful of IS people who I fully expect to get accepted that haven't heard back. So it really is still early!

I still have a hard time believing they just randomly pull applications to review... That just doesn't make any sense to me.

Let's say a handful of stellar applicants who interviewed in October don't get reviewed until late in the process and then there aren't enough seats left for them. Idk, it just doesn't sound right.

Did UNMC ask questions about current healthcare issues or social issues? Or were their interview questions fairly traditional and straight forward?

mine did not ask anything healthcare or social-issue related. mine was very biographical in nature. who I am, what I've done, and what makes me want medicine, UNMC, etc

wow. that's rough. what are your ties to NE? did you mention any future plans including NE? how did you think your interview went? any red flags?

if you wouldn't mind, Gigi is typically known as being really helpful to people who got rejected. most of what I have seen online says that if you ask her what got you rejected that she will usually tell you straight up what to fix for next cycle and it typically works well. if you do this, and wouldn't mind sharing what she has to say, I think I speak for many/all of us that we would appreciate it.

where else were you accepted?

Lol this isn't very promising for me... But I'm basically expecting a rejection at this point. Would be really happy with just a wait list actually.

Very tough decision, but I have decided to decline my acceptance. Hoping it goes out to one of you all!

ACCEPTED!!!!! OOS. I got the envelope yesterday afternoon. FWIW it was post marked on the 9th.

Wow, your application is getting me hopeful about mine! :) Out of curiosity, do you have any connections to Nebraska?

No not really. I did spend about 6 years in Kansas City. So I talked about a more general connection to the mid-west. I do feel very lucky and was very impressed by UNMC.

Just received a letter address to First Year Medical Students about doing the summer participation program. I haven't received an acceptance letter yet, and I'm OOS. So I guess this means I'm accepted!?! It says congratulations on your acceptance to this years class. Anyone else receive the mail out of order?

I wish I had received this!
