2014-2015 University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Do they only call on Monday afternoons? They also told us in our interview that everything would be through email. Hmm

They typically call on Monday evenings, but calls have been made throughout the week. Releasing acceptances via phone is a personal touch that Carolina has placed on the admissions process. However, some applicants have been notified by an acceptance packet in the mail (sent to all accepted applicants) without ever receiving a phone call. Other admission decisions such as wait list and rejection are typically communicated by e-mail.

This is only my understanding of UNC's process. Please chime in if you have differing experience or knowledge.

Im pretty sure it is AdCom dependent...some of them call, others leave it to snail mail to send you the joyful news. But email is the preferred method for the not-so-joyful news :/

Good luck today all!

Nothing here. I got a different acceptance today I'm thrilled about, so it doesn't hurt quite as much as in past weeks, but I'm still hoping for some in-state love! Been 18 weeks now :/

Is this application any better, adcom?? I made this one with my tears!

Has anyone who interviewed with Dr. Falk been accepted? I interviewed in late September, IS, May 2014 graduate with 4.0 and 31 MCAT.

Go State! 🙂

I interviewed early September and waited 17 weeks before an acceptance - hang in there!

Interviewed today! Joni reassured us that there are still spots available...and she thinks two more AdCom meetings 🙂

I talked to a friend who's a UNC student host (she's as med student)

She says that tomorrow is the last set of interviews- so maybe the meeting isn't till next week?

Your friend might be right since it looks like no one (on sdn) got the call this past Monday? :xf:[/QUOTE]

Whoah, if the every-other-week schedule is the opposite of what we've been assuming, then that puts my 8 PM "No Caller ID" call last Monday in a whole new light...:wideyed:
...but they didn't leave a message or call back, and I never got anything in the mail, so I'm probably reading too much into it.

As a re-applicant the previous posts seemed somewhat familiar to me so I took a look back at last years thread. The past couple years the committee hasn't met in the second half of February, they took a hiatus until interviews finished and met twice in March. So I'm assuming they did the same thing this year, for what it's worth.

I did some snooping around in the previous threads too. Looks like they meet the first two weeks of March and try to get all acceptances in by the 15th. To be fair though that's strictly just speculation.

Hey, I interviewed same day as you. Good luck!! I thought everyone who interviewed with me was pretty awesome so I hope we all get calls soon! ha

Anyone know what time they typically call at? Gotta study but all I can do is check my phone and refresh this page.
As mentioned numerous times in this thread, they sometimes call you in the evening on Monday. Sometimes they'll call you on another day of that week. And sometimes, you'll just receive a letter in the mail with no phone call. In other words, you should go study.

Last year there weren't any acceptances reported from the first March meeting anyways, the only reason people knew they met was because a few rejections went out. Its possible they use the first meeting to narrow down the pool and spend a little time talking about the most competitive remaining applicants, and then they make the final acceptance decisions at the meeting the following week.

hmm interesting. so nobody heard a thing tonight?

Anyone else using the FAFSA emails as an indication as their status?

Are there any MS1 students browsing this thread who can explain what the first-year schedule is like? For example, what does a typical week look like for you? Including things like when you have class (8am? 9am?), what sessions are required vs. not required, how often you have tests, when are the clinical experiences, when you have free time. I apologize if this has already been asked (if it has, can anyone direct me to the answer?). I'm just curious about how the day-to-day experience is. I think I may have zoned out when people told me about the details earlier because I was too nervous...

The schedule is pretty nice, classes start at 8am and generally go until noon mon-fri, one day a week you have a class from 2-5pm that is your doctoring class pretty much (physical exam, history taking, ect). The 8am-noon class has some sessions that are required and others that are not, you have a mix of small group and large group sessions, large group or lecture is not required and is recorded and can be watched online. On a rare occasion you have an evening commitment to something else like anatomy. Clinical experiences come in different ways, you have a dedicated week once a semester during the didactic curriculum. You also have plenty of opportunities to shadow physicians in the hospital. There are dedicated interest groups in different specialities that set up opportunities for students. Also, you can email any physician and ask to come shadow them, I have yet to hear of someone say a physician said no. We had someone deliver a baby early in their first semester while shadowing.

If you are looking for the overall curriculum this is a link to an overall view of the new TEC curriculum.

Awesome, thanks so much! The 8am-noon class time actually sounds much better than I expected.

Well here's to hoping there are some letters in the mail for all of us today...
