2014-2015 University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Haha, I think I've seen you on other forums somewhere - I recognize you by your giraffe!

For the II did you guys get an email? Is there a Status page? Congrats!!

If I haven't received the secondary by now would do you think it's over ? I see people getting interviews so I'm just wondering.

not sure wondering same thing, i'm going to call them soon as my stats are above their averages and it's been a few weeks...

IS reapplicant, just got secondary- As a reminder, it must be submitted withing a week

Same here, IS re-app... So, are we judged more harshly post-secondary?

"The reapplication process takes somewhat longer than the initial application process. We will contact you as soon as we have made a decision about offering you an interview."

So to answer your question, I would imagine so. I feel that they would only give a second interview if they felt that your application has changed significantly for the better.

Definitely judged more harshly pre-interview, but I believe the acceptance rate for re-applicants offered an interview is very high. I can't remember the exact statistics or where I saw it but I want to say 50%-75%.

Yeah I would also want to say they screen more harshly pre-secondary 🙂, but I doubt it...Lets hope for some II folks

Anybody IS still waiting for a secondary? Verified 7/21 and no news yet beyond initial contact email 🙁 Not sure if I should call the office.

IS no secondary either.... I saw the website says they send secondaries to qualified IS applicants from now til winter. So I think I will wait a little longer?

When were you verified (if you don't mind me asking)? I hope their office is just slow... their screen is just based on numbers anyway, right?

I know someone brought it up earlier in this thread, but does anyone know how heavily UNC screens for IS first-time applicants? Nervous about a potentially lower MCAT score...

My impression is not that much. UNC's not all about the numbers, since they want to accept students who they believe will actually become good doctors, so if a slightly lower MCAT score is your only concern, I wouldn't worry about it too much. As a first-time applicant, they give you a degree of friendly inclination, and will probably be happy to offer you an interview.

Do you know roughly what % of in-state applicants get accepted after an II?

Any OOS applicants with higher than UNC's posted screen stats still not receive a secondary?

First time IS applicant:

Verified 6/16
App received email 7/11
Secondary invite and submitted 7/23
Interview Invite 8/12

Hope this helps

Hello! Anyone OOS who hasn't received a secondary yet?

Well-qualified OOS, verified 6/19 and got the App received e-mail 7/11, strong ties to NC

I am really hopeful to interview here😍

Section F: Prompts (Applicants for the MD and MD/PhD Program)
*Respond to each prompt in no more than 1-2 paragraphs (150 words total).

Prompt 1:
We have all tried something and failed, whether it was something big or something small. Describe a situation or an experience you had when you realized
that you were not up to the task, and tell us what life-lessons you learned from this experience.
Prompt 2: Much of medical school education is based on team-learning. What important activity have you accomplished that required a team approach, what
was your role in the outcome, and what did you learn from it?
Prompt 3: Give an example of how you have made a difference in someone’s life -- whether it is a patient, friend, classmate, or a family member and explain what
this experience taught you about yourself.
Section G: Research Interests (MD/PhD Applicants Only)
Please indicate your current top 3 research interests from the list below. You may add a 4th interest not provided on the list if you feel it will help us better understand
you. You can do this in the text box titled "other" below. None of these choices will commit you to specific PhD field of study.

Section H: Re-applicants (MD and/or MD/PhD Applicants)
Prompt 1: Explain why you have decided to reapply. Please respond in no more than 1-2 paragraphs (150 words total).

I am pre writing because I have not received the secondary yet (mcat scores come in about a week) and I had a question. Does it not allow you to go over 150 words or is that just a guideline? One of my answers is 187 words and I feel like I have cut out all unnecessary information but can't shorten it anymore. Just curious if anyone who has completed the app could shed some light. Thanks!

I don't remember for sure, but I think it did cut me off. Either way I would guess it is in your best interest to follow their instructions exactly. I struggled to keep my essays at 150 words as well. What I ended up doing was leaving out pretty much all background or intros for my stories, which left me more room for the reflection. Best of luck!

Thanks! 150 words seems like hardly enough room 🙁, but I obviously can't change that so I think you're right. I'll just have to cut back. Thanks for the response.

Has anybody heard anything from admissions about how long it usually takes for them to send out secondaries? This waiting process is terrible.

It usually shouldn't take that long for an IS first-time applicant. A few of us on the thread recently got ours because we are re-applicants, so there's a longer wait for us. When I applied my first time, there was a 6 day period between receiving a "Application Received Email" and my secondary.
It might not be a bad idea to contact the office to inquire and to make sure all materials were received.

Not entirely the case. Last year I was an IS, 1st time applicant and there was ~3 weeks between my App Rec'd email and my secondary. I'm a deferred applicant, so I will be in the class with you guys this cycle, so best of luck to all of you!
Thanks! That really makes me feel a lot better.

EDIT: I'm also guessing the time it takes for secondaries to come back might depend on AMCAS submission/letters of eval received dates.

Just received and submitted the supplement! Seems like they're sending them out this week, so good luck to everyone who's still waiting.

I can't figure out how to create an onyen login--do we as applicants even need one? I was redirected to the UNC onyen login site after paying the fee, but I'm assuming that doesn't pertain to me?

I applied MSTP--just got the email that they'll be reviewing applications at the end of November and letting us know about interviews before the holidays. That's a seriously long time to wait, y'all.

That email hasn't arrived to me. Did you inquire about their process, or did it seem like a generic email?

It was a generic your-application-is-complete email. "We will be reviewing applications near the end of November. Candidates selected for interviews will be notified by email before the December holiday season. Interview weekends are scheduled for January 24-26, 2015 and January 31-February 2, 2015."

How long after primary submission did you get an invitation to complete the secondary?

Thanks!
