2014-2015 University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Okay, that makes sense. I wanted to also ask the admissions office about my application status, but I guess that's crossing the line.
Yeah, I wouldn't. You'll likely get a very polite Joni reminding you that she told you not to call the office about it on interview day, and mentioning that clearly you didn't listen.

hey all, does anyone know the stats on OOS acceptance post-interview. do they even release it? thanks!

Based on their 2009 USNWR info, they accepted around 50 students in order to enroll about 20. Given the fact that I'm pretty sure they're still enrolling about that many OOS students every class, we can assume that they're probably still accepting around 50 students. According to MSAR, they interviewed 151 OOS students last year, so I assume the odds are probably around 1/3.

I called them just now. Joni said she'll make sure I get the residency form email.

I have an interview here next week..any tips/advice?
The whole affair is pretty casual, actually. You and 9 other students will be given lunch and a tour before interviewing depending on the interview schedule. When you interview, it'll be by open file so expect a few questions regarding your experiences and their significance/influence on your decision to pursue medicine. Overall, it was pretty laid back.

I hope you're fine with interviewing in front of students, since there's a slight chance rooms won't be available. One of my interviewers asked if we could talk outside in the courtyard.

Only tip I can really give is to know your application well.

I second this. I was asked most/all of the different aspects of my application by the non-voting interviewer, and basically told to sum it up in my own words for the voting member. And stay upbeat. If there is anything that you don't want brought up, don't lead them to it; just let them feel you out. They smell fear :nono:

It was a nice change of pace to have had interviews with 4 UNC interviewers (I'm a re-applicant), and to have never been asked "Why do you want to be a doctor?"

I KNOW, and I'm so thrilled and grateful... But dishonor on my family anyway, lols.

LOL, I'm a Durham native, born and raised in a family of Duke fans/alumni. My parents are absolutely thrilled that I got in to UNC, but they can't help joking about the "disgrace" of having a Tarheel in the family.

I also second (third?) the advice to know your application well. Details of my app came up in both interviews, especially since I had some pretty big blips on my undergraduate record. That being said, they were both pretty laid back. It was a gorgeous day, so I had one of my interviews in the courtyard outside, and we even stopped by a student bake sale! I think the main thing is that they want to know the real you, not just the application/interview you.

That being said, if there is something that needs to be addressed, even if it's negative, then I'd say you should talk about it. Having read your application, your interviewers will know what might work against you, and they will give you the chance to talk about it. If you avoid a negative aspect that will likely come up when they discuss your application (i.e. not a minor detail that they're unlikely to worry about), then you leave it up to the admissions committee to determine what you made out of that situation. For example, let's say you got a D in General Chemistry and didn't re-take the course. The committee might wonder if you are ready for the curriculum. However, if you talked about it, your interviewer could say, "She did poorly, because she doubled up on lab sciences for a semester and struggled with the course load. Instead of re-taking chemistry, she took a more advanced chem course the following year, in which she did well. This shows she learned from her mistake and does have the necessary chemistry foundation, regardless of her performance in a pre-requisite course."

You want to make it as easy as possible for the committee to admit you. One way to do this is by providing the answers to them and explaining the situation in your own words, especially if the question/doubt is inevitable. Think: Olivia Pope- if it's going to come up anyway, at least let it come up by your terms. If you make the commitee work too hard to justify accepting you, they probably won't.

Aah that helps so much, thanks everyone🙂 Haha I'm also getting sick of the "why do you want to be a doctor: question....I hope no one asks me that.Yeah I may need to work on how I'm going to address my MCAT score. I feel like its my only downfall on my app.

This. Especially the 'Pope' reference. I more meant don't pick at your smallish faults too much. Do what Liv would do. Gladiators always win 🙂

hi everyone! are there any current unc students on this thread? i had a few questions about the curriculum! thanks 🙂

I hate that question too. Still be prepared to answer it though! One of my interviewers used that question as a base to branch off the rest of his questions =)

Accepted at 9am by phone call! The admissions committee did in fact meet last night.

I interviewed 9/8 (14 week wait) so for those of you who interviewed early there is certainly still hope! I am not sharing my adcom's name for the sake of anonymity, but my stats were 33MCAT and 3.5 sGPA (so very average for the school).

Good luck to everyone!

9am phone call? Guess we get to extend that wonderful Monday evening 4-7 feeling!

So there's hope for anyone who interviewed 9/10 as well? My stats were 36MCAT and 3.7 sGPA and I wish I could hear back. :/

Last year, there was even someone who interviewed early September and randomly got an acceptance letter during the holiday break after waiting 14 weeks, so it definitely ain't over til it's over.

Well, against all odds I got an interview for late February!
27 MCAT
3.86 GPA
I'm a first time IS applicant and I'm quite surprised they even gave me a secondary with my MCAT score. Fingers crossed!

Side note: How late into the year does UNC usually interview? I feel like mine is very late.

Hope everyone gets an acceptance!

On a related note, I was accepted a while back but never got a call.
Starting to doubt the authenticity of my acceptance...

I just received the dreaded pre-interview rejection email, although I was applying OOS with some in-state ties. I was also complete mid-July. Good luck to everybody applying this cycle.

To anyone who's already been accepted in-state, how soon were you accepted after you filled out your residency form? I only got mine in last week because of some technical difficulties with the form, so I'm wondering if they have to wait to validate that before they know they can accept you as an in-state student. Tomorrow is the 8-week mark for me and I'm getting antsy...

How did you get your acceptance, then? IMO an acceptance packet sent to your home address is more legit than just a phone call, but if you're really skeptical, you could always call the admissions office to make sure. 😉

I was accepted prior to the form coming out (and still need to submit it). It is primarily to determine which tuition class you fall under. Your AMCAS state of residence is the primary determinant of your IS/OOS status.

When were you accepted/when did you interview? I guess my "haven't processed the form yet" theory is bunk, but I do know I have to be patient about the incredibly loose 8 week guideline.

Does anyone here know if they want/accept updated transcripts from this semester?

Got the packet, just never got the call. I probably missed it, though. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I think there was a stipulation in the acceptance packet that they needed your updated transcript prior to matriculation.

Well, I am just post-interview, haven't heard back yet. I imagine it can't hurt if they're going to ask for it eventually anyway, so I'll just go ahead and send it.

I wouldn't send anything until I heard back from the school. IIRC they told us to avoid sending letters, updates, etc. post-interview. Your call, though.

Joni was pretty specific about this. I'd say to either a) let well enough alone until you do hear from them; or b) at most, call and ask if they'd like the updated one. And I would strongly lean on option A, since Joni made it pretty clear they have what they need to make a decision.

Rejected by email today. This one's gonna take me days to recover from. Good luck to everyone else! UNC is a still a great school.

EDIT: Oops, forgot my stats. GPA 3.7, MCAT 36, in-state. Guess I know now why they didn't send me the residency form when I called lol.

Sorry to everyone who didn't make it today. It sucks, but those of you who posted your stats sound like you'll be going somewhere in the fall so don't get too down about it.

Apparently I made it through this first culling. I interviewed 9/22 and haven't heard anything. No news isn't good news but it's still not bad news.
