2014-2015 University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Congrats. Would you mind sharing your stats/adcom/reapplicant?

Sorry for the late reply! I have been celebrating since I got the call (not really, I am working every minute I am awake). I am an in-state, first time applicant (after a gap year) and my adcom is not one of those mentioned on this thread. My GPA was about a 3.6. I am so excited for second look!

If anyone who has gotten the call would like to feed my paranoia, I have a question for you. I missed a call around 11 this morning, and I'm hesitant to assume it's from my adcom because it was not a UNC number (i.e., it didn't start w/966-, 962-, or 843-). Do you all know if they generally make the calls from personal/cell phones, or were you able to tell?

The main area code in Chapel Hill is 919 (source- was UNC undergrad), by the way. I'm not sure if this is good or bad news to you, but I would be surprised if you got the call as early as 11 am - most tend to go out from 6-8 pm or so (correct me if I am wrong, everyone). My adcom call came from a personal cell, but the area code was still 919.

Ironically, that probably means that if we haven't received said email, we haven't been accepted, so it will probably cause us to lose hope.

The original email for second look weekend went out before I was accepted, and I did not get it. I got a rehash of the second look email after being accepted with later RSVP dates.

Exactly. So no email (original or rehashed) likely means that we weren't accepted.

The email is addressed to me with my name, so it could be individually sent out to people accepted later. There is no reason to think they couldn't resend the second look email to someone accepted Friday or next week.

It's not hard to modify your emails so that they all automatically address the applicant by their first name. A lot of schools do that. Considering the fact that my FAFSA emails from UNC have been addressed to me with my name, and considering the fact that I continued to receive these emails long after I turned in my FAFSA, I will assume that merely addressing my name in an email means nothing.

And UNC only decides to accept students on Mondays every two weeks, so unless they're ...

Just trying to be realistic here. Next notifications will probably be rejections/waitlists.

Thanks! I was referring to office numbers at UNC all starting with the same #s (not area code), but yours being from a cell and not an office phone is mildly encouraging. 2 others got calls Wednesday morning which is why I asked, but so far no email about second look.

This is starting to feel a bit like an episode of Serial, amiright?

II in august, interview in early Jan with Bright, got the call exactly 8 wks later (monday night).

ya for others - mine came from a cell too (919) - left a message on the machine and i called back and got the offer. ALSO - i know people who've been contacted on a Tuesday/Wednesday. Depending on your interviewer, they might have forgot to call (happened to my friend last year, was accepted in January but didn't find out until late Feb -_-) so your first knowledge of your acceptance might just be an email about second look or snail mail.

for those who are going to second look, looking forward to meeting yall there - and for those still waiting, best of luck!

Well today is Friday. I guess that means those of us still waiting to hear back are definitely waitlisted or rejected.

It looks like it's going to be another year of waiting for me.

I know there's a lot that makes or break the decision besides just your GPA and MCAT scores but I wish people would actually give honest feedback as to why you were rejected. It's the same with job applications. Often times the fear of getting sued forces people to make up reasons why they didn't like you. That really doesn't help the applicant to improve at all.

I know people ask for post rejection advice from schools all the time, and sometimes the advice they give are actually helpful. But what about after you did everything they said to improve and then you're still rejected? I wish we could read what adcoms are writing in our files so we can get pass all this politically correct BS about not hurting people's feelings so we can really improve.

I'm so sorry to hear that! I'm sure a lot of the other re-applicants can relate to your situation. Were you accepted anywhere else?

Sadly I wasn't. But at least finally I get some closure after waiting for 4 months to hear back from UNC.

It seems that unfortunately you didn't make the cut at UNC either. Did you hear any good news elsewhere?

Yeah, I was fortunate to get an acceptance this cycle. While the advice UNC gave me at the end of last cycle may not have made much of a difference here, I think it still helped me improve my overall application which was what probably gave me more opportunities this cycle.

Spoke with admissions earlier. We'll hear final decisions by early April. Looks like everyone heard in the first week of April about wait list/rejections for the last couple of years judging by those threads.

Did they give any indication as to whether there were any more open seats/if there would be more acceptances sent out before then?

Based on last year's thread, there were only waitlists and rejections from this point on - but there was at least one case of a person being put on the waitlist in early April and getting accepted off of it by late April.

I keep checking the mail every 30 minutes! And don't worry! Maybe next week :]

Just curious, did anyone else on here interview with Dr. Henry?

Soooo... does anyone know how many meetings there are left at this point? I received a call from a 919 number the other day, freaked out thinking it could possibly be UNC, only to answer for the State Troopers Association asking for donations :meh:

I was thinking none, but @ellocarter's post seems to suggest that there's at least one. I've gotta say I'm not holding out hope any longer - it's gotten pretty exhausting over the past 20 weeks.

If there is one more meeting it would probably be next week I don't think they meet on consecutive Monday's. Don't get down on yourself!

I've heard from reliable sources (MS1s now) that a bunch (relatively) of people received acceptance calls at the end of march/early april, after one last meeting after the last interview date - there's always a chance until they tell you no.

Does anyone know what they're doing about housing?
I was thinking if you don't know someone already, I would wait until second look to network. Also, I heard there's a new FB group up for the accepted class so you can go check that out as well.

I really hope that's the case. It seems to defy trends on SDN from last few years but then again SDN may not be an accurate representation of the applicant pool.

There's less than 2 weeks left so I guess we will see. Rejections and wait lists will most likely go out on April 3.

Do you (or anybody else) happen to have the link to the facebook group?

I just wanted to let you guys know that as a current MS1, I would say at least 15 in my class came off of the waitlist at UNC, including myself. So even if you get a waitlist spot, do not despair because there is always hope! Good luck to everyone!

Thanks for the positivity! Do you know how big their WL was last year?

Funday monday has come and gone, looks like noone heard anything?

I imagine, and this is speculation, that they are using the extra week to finalize the last acceptances (if there are any), the waitlist, and than the remaining rejections. I think next Monday will be the day.

Just curious, has UNC only released one batch of rejection letters - way back in December? It seems strange to keep the majority of interviewed applicants in limbo for such a long time, and prevent them from pursuing plans for next year when they already have an idea of who won't be part of the class.

I hear you, I have been waiting for a very long time and would like to initiate backup plans. The worst part is knowing that I am likely rejected (as the accepted people heard within a much shorter time frame), but retaining just enough hope that I do not feel safe pulling personal contacts to obtain job interviews etc. Telling us 8-10 weeks was very unfair, I would have hoped that UNC would treat its applicants with a bit more respect...

can anyone confirm there has only been one round of rejections? That doesn't seem possible with 5-6 months of interviews, but would be very disheartening if it is true.

Unless there have been applicants rejected that haven't posted on here, I think that the only rejections came in December. I know that I have been waiting for over 10 weeks with no word, and that there are many more who have waited much longer than that. At this point my expectations for acceptance are pretty low, but I just really want to know one way or the other so that I can start to focus on next year. Almost every other school seems to let students know within an acceptable timeframe I don't understand why UNC cannot as well.
