2014-2015 University of Tennessee Health Science Center Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just sent in my AMCAS! Real excited about this cycle. Reapplying and it feels so good!

Got the robo email from Nelson yesterday. And now we patiently wait for secondaries.....

I will be applying next year! What I have seen from the previous thread is that there isn't an essay nor a secondary fee (hooray!) Also, UTHSC's application cycle is VERY SLOW. Last year, the first batch of secondaries weren't sent until August 21st.

Hey everyone, I am a starting M1 at UTHSC and I want to wish everyone the best with this application season. Nelson Strother and the UT admissions office are very nice so do not be hesitant to call about valid questions. UT also has an interview schedule posted on their website, so this can help figure out when you might get an invite to interview.

I have only been to orientation so far, but I also wanted to say that UT is a great medical school to be a part of, and will have everything you need to be successful. It is not an exaggeration that almost all MD medical schools in major cities have excellent teaching faculty, research opportunities, and patient exposure. Even if the research at UT is not up to your standard, you can always apply to opportunities at Duke or other highly prestigious institutions during the summer. If you have a choice of medical school at the end of the season, I would highly consider the cost and personal fit above anything else 🙂.

Thank God. I applied "late" (just got my primary sent here). Glad I am in the same boat as everyone else so far. Does anyone know how they feel about OOS?
To apply OOS, you have to be from a state contiguous to Tennessee or the child of an alum. Even then, the chances aren't the best. But if one of those conditions applies to you and you have good stats, it's no big deal for you to roll the dice on UT. There is no secondary fee to pay.

I just got the secondary!

It's a bit confusing but one half of the form must be emailed with a 2x2 jpeg photo of yourself and the second half must be mailed to UTHSC.

Taking the mcat on August 27th. Is it too late to realistically apply? I am biochem major and biology minor. GPA 3.75.

I really don't think so. Not for this school. They seem to be moving really slowly. The first (presumably) batch of secondaries just got sent out an hour ago. You won't be early, by any means, but if you do well on the MCAT, I think you will be fine. I would still apply.

I received a secondary and I am OOS. However, I grew up in TN and graduated from high school there so that might help me out a bit.

I grew up in TN and went to high school here, but I still have not received a secondary. I turned my primary in the first day possible. Possible rejection?

I got:

Dear Student:

I am writing to apprise you that we have received your AMCAS application and it is currently under review. Admissions decisions are made on a rolling basis and applicants are notified accordingly. For additional information regarding the admissions process, please visit our website:

Submitted secondary and mailed other half today.

IS, got my secondary Wednesday as well.

Hey question. How did you guys send a wallet sized picture? I was able to resize mine to 3x5, but it seems the only way to get it the right size is to select that as a print option.

Hey for those who got a secondary last Wednesday...

Did it come like during the afternoon? morning?

Yeah. It was afternoon. Around 3. PS I got verification that mine is in, guys! I shoulda kept my interview time for ETSU in Oct because of Memphis starting in Oct! Oh well x) Ces' La Vie.

Nice! Thanks for clearing that timing issue haha. Now I will be on the edge of my seat everyday at 3:30 until I get a secondary!

sooo does anyone have the balls to call UTHSC and ask when they are sending off the second batch of secondaries??? 😉 Pwease??

OOS contiguous state. Secondary received this morning (9/4) at 8:13 a.m. "Application has been received" email on 9/2. The email on 9/4 stated the secondary needed to be completed by 9/11/14.

Nice, quick turn-around there. I just got the email a few minutes ago saying they received my app. Hope to hear back in a few days!

So I got my "Application has been received" email from NS yesterday, 9/9 at about noon. As you might think I'm still crossing some digits for luck. Come onnnnnnn, come onnnnnnn!

Hey guys! I applied "late" as well (just submitted to AMCAS on Sunday), I guess it's gonna take 4-6 weeks to be verified, ouch...do you guys know if they will send anything before your AMCAS is verified? One of the other schools I applied to immediately sent me an automated email. Also I'm kind of worried, this is my first time apply and although I knew it was rolling admissions I didn't know about the whole AMCAS verification thing taking so long. I hope I haven't screwed myself by submitting in September

I sent in my app on the third of this month, and I was verified yesterday, so they're going pretty fast, it seems. Hope that assuages your concerns a bit.

And no, I don't think they send anything pre-verification. I just got an email this morning saying they got my verified AMCAS and would be reviewing applications for the supplemental part.

Help! First-time poster. Sorry if I mess this up.
For the secondary, how did you guys manage to send ONLY the half that was to be emailed? Did you just simply send back the entire file and still mail the signature part? I'm not able to simply copy and paste the first half into a different Word doc. It changes the format.

And today, 9/12, I received the secondary at about a quarter till five. Never not exciting - "Oh, wow, you might like me? You might like me!" (ETA: I'm an in-State applicant.)

FutureMDJP, I'm reapplying this year and also reapplying to UT-HSC. It's been a minute so I might misremember but I'm pretty sure that last year I saved the file as directed and sent it with the blank last page. Maybe I left the boxes clicked? I genuinely don't remember but as you're sending in a hard copy of that page, they're not that hidebound about it. They know we're anxious to be seen to be detail-oriented, so make sure everything is properly spelled and filled in with the correct information and you should be fine. (For what it's worth, I did get an interview with them, and was waitlisted.) If you'd rather, you can always call Ms. Akram on Monday to ask for a surer answer. She was very kind and understanding of that anxiety in the few email interactions we had last year.

Ok, Thanks for the info! That was totally going to be my plan. Btw, good luck this time around👍

In the past couple years, when did Tennessee start sending out interview invites?

In the past couple years, when did Tennessee start sending out interview invites?

FYI last year's dates might not be good to consider for this one. There were some hijinks involving the AMCAS server not releasing all the primaries for Memphis till very late for folks who had applied or completed (not sure which) after a certain date in the summer so batches were off.

Yes, I am pretty certain that UTHSC only sends secondaries if they plan to interview you - same true for IS and OOS. Anyone feel free to correct me if that is untrue.

Nelson Strother has said that UTHSC doesn't approve of the fund-raising style of secondaries that other schools use. He said they only intend to request secondary information from students that have the potential to be interviewed. That being said, the secondaries are now free. I'm not sure how long they have been free, but he told me this viewpoint just last year.

AMCAS was processed 9/16, got automated email from Nelson Strother today. Any idea when I might expect a secondary?
