2014-2015 University of Texas - San Antonio Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
@Hyahh15 & anyone else:
What was the 'dress code' or what were most people wearing at the Sunday social? I don't want to stand out in the wrong way...haha

I interviewed in August. LizzyM is 31. I sent them an email regarding my intent and an update recently. So if it is a top pick for you, I recommend letting them know how much you want to be there. Just be genuine.
who did you send the email to spefifically?

I heard all the Texas schools are holding off on their pre matches this year because there are so many more applicants

What percentage of acceptances do you guys think pre-match vs match in TMDSAS?

I heard that ~80% receive initial acceptances through prematch, and ~20% receive their initial acceptances through match. I surely hope that isn't the case this year.

Edit: I think that statistic was for all Texas schools, not San Antonio in particular.

There is a huge difference between the number of pre-matches sent out and the number of people actually following through and going to that school. For instance, at UTHSCHSA Dr. Jones said that 50% of the class is filled through pre-match. This may mean that they give out pre-matches until ~100 people "accept", however many that takes. Look at El Paso, their numbers are readily available. Last year they gave out like 212 pre-match accepts I believe, for a class of 100. Almost everyone receiving a pre-match offer accepts and sits on it if it's not their first choice school, so it's all a guessing game. Schools often accept 2/3 of the individuals they interview to fill a class. That's why they say getting an interview is the hard part. That's just my two cents, does anyone else have any input?

That number seems crazy. The people I know that have prematched have really high stats. I havent seen anyone with average GPA (3.6) or with an MCAT of 30 prematch unless they are URM or unusual non-trad.etc. I might be wrong.

Just wondering, but where did you hear this? I don't think this is the case, but if you heard it from an admissions guy then that means something.

lol. did y'all just get a holiday e-card from uthscsa.

I wouldn't read too much into it. It's from the office of diversity so I'd bet it was sent to the same batch of people who got an email about LMSA and SNMA breakfast

Whoa, PreMed015 you went for a deep cut

Idk, that was the first year Texas schools had prematch. I'm sure they got better about conserving acceptances for the match. Someone commented above that San Antonio only fills half of their class with the prematch. I know Houston also prematches lightly. There's still several avenues to an acceptance, but being on SDN can fuel neuroticism at times.

By the way...I received the happy holidays email twice, three minutes apart. That was incredibly mean. I wonder if they are checking the San Antonio thread laughing at our suffering.

Hi everyone! This is my first post on SDN 🙂 I was curious... Anyone know the average Step 1 score at San Antonio from previous years? I can't seem to find it anywhere online

I did and haven't heard anything.... really dislike this hook they hang us on ... at least send out wait list or some sort of notification. I would assume the class is full by now for OOS and we are just on a wait list...

Hi I think Dr. Jones said around 227 or so.

For the OOS ppl who are worried about all of the OOS spots being taken, I am about to decline the OOS acceptance that I was offered in October. So that's at least one more spot that will be available soon. 🙂

you are a godsend! =) Good luck in your future. Congrats for being in a position where you can comfortably do that.

AH UTHSCSA!!! saw the prompt on my phone, it said Dear Ecolik-12, First off congratulations!..... and my hands were trembling as I unlocked my phone and proceeded to realize that it was just an update email -_- .

Interviewed Monday, and didn't get the email. Can some kind soul post it here? REALLY LOVE THIS SCHOOL.

"First I wanted to congratulate you on a very successful interview season that will continue for us through January 15th. We will have interviewed almost 1,000 students and look forward to selecting another outstanding class. I wanted to again inform you of the change in the TMDSAS match process for ranking medical schools at which you have interviewed.

Starting last year, you will have an opportunity to rank two selections: University of Texas School of Medicine at San Antonio-San Antonio Clinical Education Campus (CEC) and/or; University of Texas School of Medicine at San Antonio- South Texas CEC (http://rahc.uthscsa.edu/). As has been the case since the first group in 2002, students will complete their preclinical education in San Antonio and third year clinical education at facilities in the Lower Rio Grande Valley. Only those of you who also checked South Texas Clinical Education campus on your application will be eligible to rank the South Texas CEC.

A total of 15 students will be selected through the identical process in the TMDSAS match. The South Texas CEC offers a unique clinical education in the third year of medical school as there are few to no residents at the teaching hospitals and clinics. Thus students have greater opportunity for more hands-on experiences and direct patient care. Over 100 students have completed their third year at the South Texas CEC, and given the opportunity all would choose the experience again.

The video (http://som.uthscsa.edu/Admissions/video02.asp) provides a more in depth look at clinical education at the South Texas CEC. Also, available on our website is a series of frequently asked questions about the STCEC that our medical students have answered. http://som.uthscsa.edu/Admissions/faq.asp

Please let me know if you have any questions. I am very happy to put you in touch with one of our students who have rotated at the South Texas CEC.

I am also very excited about our new Academic Learning and Teaching Center which is currently under construction and will open Fall 2015. It will be located adjacent to the court yard of the school of medicine. An informative video is available (http://som.uthscsa.edu/Admissions/video03.asp).

Best wishes for a wonderful holiday season, Dr. J. "
