2014-2015 University of Texas Southwestern Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
hi everyone! I just got accepted to UTSW off the waitlist at 6:53 PM today! I had all but given up hope but there is still movement; you guys have been so helpful (although sometimes anxiety-inducing 😛) so I decided to make an account and post this; not to brag but just to say that there is still hope! I had all but given up, even rented an apartment in San antonio.

Info on me:
32 MCAT 3.75 GPA 3.52 Science
went to Rice university
had my interview on November 8th, 2014

This data is the match offers made this year: Note the reduction in the # of offers extended.

Hey everyone, I just realized something that might explain why the offers seem to have been "reduced" this cycle. You guys might already know, but I just discovered it and figured I would share. 😛

This is the first year that the UT-PACT participants will be MS1s at UTSW. This is 20 people that were chosen from high school for the new BS-MD program between UTD and UTSW. Heres a few links- http://www.utdallas.edu/news/2015/5...eers_story-sidebar.html?WT.mc_id=NewsFacebook

http://www.utdallas.edu/pre-health/ut-pact

So, technically, there were 242 offers given. 20 were just already reserved from the very beginning.

That's good info! UTSW also extends primary offers to many fewer students than other schools. For example, UTMB Galveston made offers to ~460 applicants to fill a class the same size as UTSW. I'd ~guess~ this is partly due to the fact that UTSW is a top notch school and partly due to the fact that they historically accept a lot of students in pre-match and from the waitlist.

There are also SHAPE students from UT-Austin. It's also part of the TIME program. 15 are going to UTSW, and 15 are going to UT-Houston. Actually, a couple fewer than that because some either decided not to do it or couldn't keep their grades high enough.

Has anyone had any news at all over the last 2 weeks? I can't find too much info about people getting offers lately.

Nope. Haven't heard anything yet. Surprised that we haven't seen much movement so close to the deadline.

A few people have been joining the fb page, but it is hard to tell if they are recent accepted or ms2/3/4. Last cycle a few people got in right before the deadline, so I think there is still hope! 🙂

I know at least 1 of those was my wife. She's a UTSW MS3. She joined the FB page to see if people were posting about just getting in. She said the same thing, she couldn't tell either if they were new students or current students.

Hopefully not an inappropriate question but some friends were surprised when I mentioned that I thought we get drug screened prior to classes starting. Any current students care to share when drug screening takes place?

Well, I guess it's over for anyone who's been accepted to another school and was wait listed at UTSW.

Is the June 1st rule a pretty steadfast one? I wonder if there were ever any exceptions made.

It seems pretty strict. This is from TMDSAS website. But you can tell it is already updated for next application cycle.

"j. After 5:00 pm CT on June 1, 2016, no medical school in Texas may offer a position to an applicant already accepted by another medical school in Texas. This is the result of an agreement among the six UT System Medical Schools, Baylor College of Medicine, Texas A&M HSC College of Medicine, Texas Tech University HSC School of Medicine, Texas Tech University HSC Paul L. Foster School of Medicine at El Paso and UNT-Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine. Only extraordinary circumstances warrant an exception to this policy. If this should occur, the Dean/Director of Admissions at the school wishing to extend an offer must receive approval from the Dean/Director of Admissions at the school where the applicant is holding a position BEFORE the offer is extended."

Seems like it would be a TON of work for the schools if they want to move past this deadline. So, I kinda doubt they do it often.

Hmm, yeah that does seem pretty strict. If they had all this time to accept someone off the waitlist before June 1, why would they go through the extra trouble afterwards? It would be interesting to know what kind of "extraordinary circumstances" would warrant such an exception.

You'll get an email sometime soon regarding it. They'll tell you you just have to go and get it done somewhere that is approved by July X or whatever. Its a piss test. Never heard of any drug screens after that. Maybe before rotations, not sure.

Got the rejection letter yesterday, looks like Baylor it is 😉

Hey guys, I just wanted to let anyone reading know that I got an email from UTSW today--they said that they anticipated very little, if any more, movement on the waitlist.

Hi! I really would love to go to UTSW and was wondering if any of you guys could shed light on my chances from your own experience?

MCAT composite: 74-84%
Chem/phys: 82-97%
CARS: 39-54% (worried about this one)
Bio: 72-87%
Psych: 85-100%

GPA: 3.97 (undergrad), 4.0 (grad)
Texas resident, lots of ECs, 120 hours shadowing, no research

Would I still have a shot with low verbal and lack of research? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Congrats to all who are done with this app cycle!

That composite is approximately the equivalent of a 30, if I'm not mistaking. I would apply with it and see what happens. I would think you get in somewhere with that gpa and good ECs. I'm going to UTH and my composite was 88%, similar gpa and no research at the time. Goodluck!
