2015-2016 Florida International University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
For those who got decisions already, how long of a wait was it from "admissions committee scheduled" to having a decision?

Hey friends!!🙂 It's my first time on SDN. Can you guys tell me honestly what are my chances of getting into FIU

MCAT 504 (old 28) BS: 126 PS:127 SS:126 CARS:125
GPA: 3.82
>1000 hours of research
40 hours of shadowing
600 hours of non clinical volunteering
Florida Resident (I live close to the school)
took a year off, I was in school leadership

Any help is welcome

I had a similar mcat (old one), with same research and volunteering hours, more shadowing hours and I got accepted.
I made sure to tailor my secondary according to FIU's mission. I had been involved with volunteering and helping underprivileged and I made it a point to elucidate that serving the underprivileged is really my thing (and it is!)

The point being, that FIU has a very strong mission and as long as they see that you fit their mission, that kinda low mcat should not be a problem and you totally will have a shot.

Oh and they really do value the committee letter...if you have a very high recommendation from them, you should be fine

Awesome!!! That gives me hope!! If I get to interview I will make sure they like me, I really want to go to that school so bad

I Interviewed here on Monday. This school is definitely a top choice for me. They said they will let us know around the second week of December... longest wait of me life! lol

Hey all. I got an II about a week and a half ago (IS, LizzyM 70, complete early August). The more research I do, the more excited I am for interview day on 11/16! Ladies who have interviewed here- the email says to wear comfortable shoes for the tour. Did you wear heels or flats or did you bring heels/change into flats? Sorry if this seems like a trivial question.

Also to anybody who has interviewed recently but not posted yet: any insights/advice would be much appreciated!!

I wore flats. You will be going down a lot of stair cases, so I'd definitely stay away from heels.

I wore heels and changed into flats for the tour. But many girls wore flats the whole time

I literally changed into comfy boots. Ask Andria (the Director of Admissions) -- they get it and they don't care. Be comfy!

For some reason, I always assumed you were a guy! HAHA!

I mean...not to put gender norms on you -- heels elongate EVERYONE'S legs 😉

That would make sense to me. FIU is inland and in the mornings the rush hour traffic would be from those living inland heading to the coast. Perhaps some current students could confirm? @TobogganMD @RedPhys

Yes, traffic generally heads East in the morning and West in the evening. You can make it from Brickell/downtown area to the medical campus in <30 minutes, barring any random traffic or accidents (which are quite common in Miami). I'd recommend Gables/Grove/Midtown for quality of life, Doral/Sweetwater for proximity in pre-clinical years. The former neighborhoods are not cheap (~$1500-2000 for a 1 bedroom, so many have roommates) and the latter are moderately priced ($1000-1500).

Status changed to preliminary review completed 1 day after I submitted an update. Good news I guess? Hoping for an II

I have been at preliminary review completed for like a month and a half

Does anyone know when the next committee meeting is?

If you have been accepted don't wait to write your diversity essay for scholarships, the committee is already meeting and scholarships are being awarded.

Just submitted mine today *fingers crossed*
Any idea when they will be meeting next? Is it the same group of people who have read our PS and secondary?

I don't remember hearing about this or seeing it in the acceptance packet. Can you elaborate?

FIU sent an email regarding the scholarships they offer. One of them was a Diversity Scholarship, where you have to write an essay and fill out a short application for them to consider you.

Yes check your email it should have been from COM FinAid.

@BornToLead I submitted on 10/28 and received notice on 11/18. Things may slow down during holiday breaks though.

That was fast. So did they tell you about how much they will award you based on only the Diversity essay? Or the awards based on diversity application, need-based and merit all combined?

It is undisclosed as the nature of the award, but it was stated that it based on your credentials as an applicant. So what does that mean? I can only guess that it is part essay, part merit, and some part hypothetical need since I have yet to turn in a FAFSA for 2016.

Anyhow they have chosen to bless me with a scholarship, so whatever magic or ju ju that was performed I will gladly accept it.

Yeah probably part diversity and part merit, cuz they dont have our FAFSA. How much is the award going to cover for your tuition?

Does it seem like decisions from yesterday's meeting are not coming out today? I don't know how late they normally send out decisions

Hey, would any females be interested in sharing a two bedroom apartment at Vista Verde apartments? It's across the street from FIU.

Also, is there a Class of 2020 Facebook page yet?

I've heard vista verde is pretty rough, it got terrible reviews on yelp lol. Also yea there's a Facebook group once you get accepted Aray will add you (or email him if you didn't). No one has talked about housing on there yet though and I'm too shy to ask first

On that subject though any current students with recommendations on where to live would be very appreciated!

Late to SDN lol got the preliminary review complete status change at the end of Oct fingers crossed for interview soon

Not sure what the acronym IS means, but I too am a first time applicant and will be graduating this spring.

IS=In State (Applicant)
OOS= Out of State (Applicant)

Best of Luck to ya this cycle!

Does anyone know which day the admissions committee is meeting? It should be this week right?
