2015-2016 Florida International University Application Thread

Phew...

5:00pm marks the financial deadline, and we are a couple of days away from the 2-week mark since the first round of WL offers went out (meaning, the student's decision will have to be made by that time). The last half of this week could get interesting...

Hang in there, fam!

Movement! Come to Papa

I did not get the email either. Idk what that is supposed to mean.

I don't think it's supposed to mean anything. They sent them out last year -- some people got them; some didn't; some people got two. I got one and still didn't get pulled. So, try not to read too much into it and stress yourselves out.

Big email with our schedule, orientation info, and other matriculation info just went out for all those accepted who haven't checked yet. Check your emails!

Just checked it out..quite a lot of info to digest! I am confused about how the textbook system works? Do we have to make arrangements ourselves to purchase them, or are they being provided to us with a cost?

Same here. There's like 30+ textbooks. After reading through the welcome letter I get the impression that we pick and choose which ones we want to get. On the other hand, I vaguely remember students saying something about online resources and not needing to really buy any books. Can anyone clarify?

Entirely possible to get through without purchasing a single textbook for classes. Probably 90% of the books are available online through the library.

Don't waste your money. If you NEED to buy something to calm your nerves, just buy the book for GMC.

Some people find they can't focus on textbooks and just study from the powerpoint slides. Some people save money by reading the online books. Some people find they like having a real book in their hands. Please figure it out as you go and don't buy 30 books.

Has anyone made an account at COMPLIO yet for drug and background screening?
When ordering a test, it asks for Student ID. Should FIU alumni go ahead & type their undergrad Panther ID?

Good question. I have no idea but I'll be calling them on Monday to find out.

Does anyone know when the deadline is to complete the pre-matriculation requirements?

I'm still on the WL and I haven't gotten that email once. It likely means nothing, I wouldn't look too far into it.

So just checking with everyone else...my.fiu.edu still shows "Admission Not Confirmed" on the to-do list, right?

Not for me. That disappeared already. Did you submit the deposit?

Really? Yes I've paid the deposit.
Do you see your financial aid info?

I emailed financial aid regarding official award packages and they told me it would be coming out in within the next couple weeks. This was last week, so we should be expecting it relatively soon.

Anybody know the parking situation? When it gets packed? And which lot to park at?

It's honestly a free-for-all. Parking is packed in the mornings and by 9 almost everything is gone. The overfill lot, which is basically a non-paved lot, is where I used to park a lot in undergrad since the parking garages were almost always filled to capacity by the time you needed them. The overfill lot never fills to capacity so there is always a spot to find and it's relatively close to the med school as it's adjacent to PG5 parking garage. PG5 is always the nicest spot to park for the med school if you can find a spot to park. Plus, if it's in the morning, you can park and go downstairs to the Dunkin Donuts to fill up on the sweet legal drug that is caffeine.

So I just realized HWCOM has a very short summer break. When do the students get time to carry out research/ summer programs?

It is, but all the good summer research programs tend to be around 6-8 wks. Maybe there's something I'm missing. Any insight @NEU305 @Lifschitz ?

I don't think you're missing anything. I spoke with an M2 just the other day and we were discussing this topic. According to them, that's all the time you get. I might have to spend 2 of those weeks in basic, :bang:

well that sucks

well that sucks

it does, but it seems to work well enough. I would say though that, besides the short summer, the upper class-men are making an effort to make things better for us with other little perks here and there. That should soften the blow a little bit.

I had my sight on a couple sweet programs. Damn!

I just checked and this year it's still six weeks and some change (Wednesday, June 22 – Sunday, August 7, 2016). If you're looking to do a certain research program with set dates, it will be difficult/impossible in the first two years. If the dates are flexible, you could theoretically do it during that time. It is possible to delay the start of fourth year (using free blocks) to do one of those projects then as well.

Is it common for students to do research? Is it encouraged? I know @Lifschitz mentioned a FIU research program.

Pretty sure every student has to complete a research project. Although "project" is used loosely -- the requirements seem to be pretty lax. I don't know much about it, but I was made aware of it by a couple of faculty members.

BeachBlondie is correct in that every student must complete the research curriculum in order to graduate. However, I would not describe anything under the auspices of the research faculty as being "lax."

Research is not a strength of FIU. Compare the research funding FIU receives to any worthwhile school and it becomes clear.

FIU had a couple competitive matches this year and I'm not sure if you'd be aware of their personal resumes but wouldn't they have had some sort of research or publication to be competitive applicants?

FIU does have some very impressive matches every year. I have no clue about their resumes, but I'm sure that any matches in a research-emphasizing field would have the prerequisite research.

Whether that research was through FIU is another story. I have no idea.

Have any current students heard anything, on the wind, about this year's relative wait list movement? It seems that, this year, more people on SDN have indicated being pulled, but that's obviously an unreliable sample of the entire population. If the movement is similar to last cycle, I'll likely have to consider it a wash and move forward with my contingency plan. Any information would be awesome.... for all of us, I'm sure.

"Lax" was probably a mischaracterization -- that's on me. I meant "lax" as in the student seems to have relative freedom to choose a topic, advisor, etc. But, again, this is secondhand information.

I've personally heard of a handful of people coming off the waitlist and there seems to be a surge in activity on the fb page within the last two weeks. However, I'm not sure if that's attributable to people scrambling for roomates or those who were accepted off the waitlist

Did the people come off recently? Is this "surge" of activity the addition of new group members? thanks, man! 🙂

What are you talking about? FIU has tons of research. Idk if you're talking about strictly the medical school, but the university as a whole has a very respectable research component.

The medical school, specifically, has a comparatively small research budget (the numbers are available online) when compared with other, more established universities. This is pretty typical for a new school.
