2015-2016 Tulane University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
If you are in New Orleans and the situation calls for fast food, forgo the golden arches and try Raising Canes. Its a mostly regional chicken finger place (with a location in Boston that I would take a train ride for during college) that most people enjoy.

Agree with all of the above regarding the city- I've lived here for 6 years. New Orleans is definitely a crime ridden city, however I have never felt personally unsafe. In my mind it comes down to personal awareness and being cognizant enough to not put yourself in dangerous situations. I.e, walking around alone at 3am, wandering off into sketchy areas, etc. The only stories I've heard of people I know actually experiencing crime were due largely in part to their own poor decisions.

Restaurant wise, it's pretty hard to go wrong and obviously depends what you're looking for. Higher end (figure spending ~$25-30 per entree) and more well known I'd recommend:

GW Fins
NOLA (one of Emeril's restaurants)
Galatoires
Revolution
Domenica (John Besh)
Sylvain
Atchafalaya
Luke (.50 cent oysters during happy hour)

For something a little less expensive and off the beaten path:

Booty's Street Food
1000 Figs
Stanley (good for brunch)
Oxalis
Wayfare
Capdeville

Looking for something real cheap/lunch:

Camellia Grill
Surrey's
Milk Bar (awesome sandwiches)

Seeing all these interviews being given out is making me nervous.
Maybe Tulane is doing interviews like concert tickets are sold. You know, certain amount for pre-sale and release more spots for the same day as the interview season progresses? Maybe I am being a bit too optimistic. I just want an II.

Also, I grew up in NOLA. If anyone needs ideas for food or things to do, PM me

BTW, Morning Call beignets are better than Cafe du Monde. Also, Morning Call isn't always crowded with tourists. 🙂

Are you joking me? We have Cane's in Minnesota, and where my brother goes to school in Ohio. It can't be THAT regional.

It's not THAT regional. I guess by "mostly regional" I meant that it originated regionally...as an LSU student's business model for a class, and expanded to other parts of the state, and now the country. And that it's not here in Chicago. But true, Ohio is saturated with Canes. And it's certainly far from Louisiana authentic. But for New Yorkers/Cali/Florida folks, I suggest trying it opposed to Taco Bell.

Ah interesting. That is a lot different from what they say on the giant board in the restaurant!

Don't mean to divert discussion away from Tulane. But yea I think most ads have mentioned the founder fishing in Alaska to raise money, but don't mention that his professors at LSU gave him a bad grade on his business plan because "a chicken finger restaurant could never work." Interesting story, indeed.

Space reserved for prompt.

Please PM the essays or lack thereof to me when the secondary is available and I will update this.

Good luck to everyone applying! :luck:
Hi can someone update with the prompt please? Sorry I don't mean to barge in just anxious to get started on the essays

I never realized how expensive hotels are in NOLA... And how every hotel close to the school is booked the night before my interview in 2 months.

St. Christopher was much cheaper than the website price for me with Tulane discount (mention on the phone). Have you tried there?

No I haven't, thanks! I'll call and check in the morning. I booked a refundable room at the French Quarter Hyatt for just under 200 but if I can save around $50 at St. Christopher's, that'll cover my gas getting there.

If you get the same rate I did, you'll be saving more than $50 🙂 Good luck!

You guys arent doing the room with a medical student thing?

Rejected this morning. Complete 7/15. I think it was the 29 MCAT cause I have the leadership and volunteering experiences.

I'm sorry to hear that and good luck with the rest of your apps. Did they email you or was it just a change on your portal?

Rejected as well this morning. Complete 7/9. Guess I won't be visiting Nola after all, haha.

Laters Tulane, got the rejection this morning. Complete 7/14, LizzyM ~ 72.

Good luck to all those still in the running, and congratulations to those who received interviews to this awesome school!

When you guys say "complete", is that the date you submitted your secondary or the date they emailed you and said you're "complete and under review"?

First II!
As soon as I saw this post, an e-mail popped up in my inbox and I almost had a heart attack but obviously it wasn't from Tulane. hahahah this cycle has already made me cray.

Congratulations! Would you mind sharing completion dates/stats?

I submitted my secondary and got that email on the same day (7/9), but I would say from the day you get that email.

I'm frantically drafting an update letter in hopes of avoiding a rejection

Mine changed to complete almost right after I submitted it

Thank you! I didn't get a complete email until almost two weeks after I submitted, so I guess I have some more waiting to do 🙂

Submitted/complete on 7/29. Scheduled my interview for 11/16. Wanted 11/2 but was taken from me as I was telling my friends/family D: Lesson learned.

Edit: LizzyM ~ 68 for those who are curious

Oh. I was complete 8/3 so I wonder if I will hear something.

Guess there wasn't any point in writing that update letter. They clearly don't want me if people completed 2 weeks after me are getting IIs 🙁

Woah...It's still relatively early. If they didn't want you they'd give you a rejection. For all you know they're just waiting to see how things go with the cycle, or waiting for an update from you. Stay positive though, as hard as it can be.

Complete on 7/26 smh starting to look like I got passed up :beat:

The arrows are the impending rejections.

Ok I'm done.

To all of the wonderful SDN'ers, I just want to say It's so hard to not be critical towards yourself. We've all been there. Since we know our own mistakes, flaws, our hidden motivations. Sometimes, we have to remember to focus on the good things we have accomplished. So give yourself a break and I am sure we will make it through this cycle, safely 🙂

congrats to all the IIs today and sorry to hear about the rejections. I submitted on 7/22. It says i'm complete but i never got the complete email. Hoping to hear some good news soon. To those of us who submitted before some of these other applicants who are receiving IIs, keep in mind that no news is good news at this stage. We are still in the running.

Good luck everyone!

Ha. I just got an email about a sale on cruises.. I would love a vacation.
