2015-2016 Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences Application Thread

Sent an email to Dr. Saguil about current wait list movement and possible feedback for my application, as we've passed the multi-acceptance deadline. He called back a couple hours later and informed me that a spot for the Army had just opened up!!! Had to make an account to inform y'all, since I've also been checking this thread obsessively. Wait list movement is still happening! Interviewed Dec 3, wait listed early March. Received the encouraging email from Dr. Saguil several weeks ago.

@jwill75r I think I remember you from the December 3rd interview, Mr. Combat Medic! We were in the same group discussion about triaging the three patients, and you gave the optimal answer without hesitation. I was the Asian guy from Massachusetts. Sincerely hope to see you (and others in this thread) at USUHS next year!!

Literally the same exact thing happened to me on Wednesday. Wrote and email Tuesday night about wait list movement and I got an acceptance call on Wednesday. What are the odds haha

Congrats! That's awesome! I haven't received a good news call yet, but I am still keeping my fingers crossed and preparing to apply next cycle in the event that I have to reapply. I remember you asking that question about triage! I remember thinking to myself that I have been working in this profession way too long if I can belt out the answer that fast without hesitating. I hope to see you at USUHS this next year as well! Congrats again!

Hey guys! I'm looking at emailing admissions for advice on next year's application. For those of you that have already done that, did you email Dr. Saguil or your admissions counselor?

I emailed Dr Saguil last year and he said to email my admissions counselor. I would maybe email admissions and copy him. That way if you don't get a response for a while you can reply all and it already has his attention.

What I will add is that I didn't get the reply until end of June even though I asked in April. Follow up more than I did.

For anybody else who got accepted last Monday: Were you able to get yourself added to the Facebook group? I put in a request last Monday, but still haven't been added.

i've not been added yet since the same time. Although, my name doesn't match my facebook name and I'm unable to change it back for another month.

I also still haven't been added yet. I'm suspecting it may be because they haven't gotten my signed acceptance letter back yet?

yeah, so i received another letter saying "by now you've received my letter of conditional acceptance". that was basically it. I called back asking whether they'd received everything they needed from me and they said that I'm now listed as unconditionally accepted. That's good, right? Just wait for orders now? I get antsy when I don't have things in writing.

That wait between the phone call and getting the written letter saying I was conditionally accepted was killer. Like omg what if he called the wrong person. But yeah. I'm antsy too until I get things in writing.

The anxiety will significantly reduce once they get the signed acceptance forms and you get the letter saying you are unconditionally accepted.

So after the initial conditional letter with the forms you sign, and then the second letter confirming that you've received a conditional, there'll be a third letter for unconditional?

All recently accepted applicants - Now make sure you get orders to COT, BOLC, or ODS. It is much easier to attend this initial entry training prior to M1 than attend during some non existent time off from USUHS.

I've twice emailed the person in charge of processing my paperwork for orders to verify that they received my paperwork, but haven't received a reply yet.

From what I have been told they are processing orders for students graduating this year and then we will get our oaths and orders.

Any news? I received an email from a recruiter that was sent for all those who are still on any waitlist, or on hold. I called the admissions office just to make sure I didn't have to followup with the person who sent the email. So, the email is intended for those who are considering attending another school and are also interested in joining the military through the HPSP. Since I didn't apply to any other school I don't have to follow up, but thought I shared the info just in case it was useful to any of ya'! Good luck!!!!!!!

Does anyone know when we need to send our transcripts into the school?
There was a letter that came with my acceptance letter stating the had to be there prior to classes starting in Aug. I just requested mine to be sent asap, since I have not been in classes for year.

How long did it take you to get your acceptance letter? I got the call a week ago and haven't received it yet

Was there anything important in the acceptance letter? Mine hasn't come in yet, either.

There is a form you have to sign and send back that says you understand what USUHS is all about, and another that says you have an undergrad degree or will be getting one prior to matriculation that you have to sign and send back. There is also a letter explaining that you must send all transcripts to USUHS prior to classes starting in Aug. I would call or email Dr. Saguil about not getting the letter if it has been more than a week.

Haha okay yeah, so a few important things there. Just sent him an email, thanks!

Thanks you guys! Good luck to those still waiting! We still got some time : )

I don't know much, but I have read that if you get accepted after officer training has started, you would start school with the rest of your classmates and the school will later find a moment between your medical training to send you off to get commissioned.

Graduated in 2013. One of my surgery residency classmates didn't get accepted until Mid OBC. He completed OBC during his fourth year. The downside is you have to complete the entire AMED OBC instead of the abbreviated HPSP/USUHS 6 week course (the whole course I believe is 12 weeks). I also have a chief resident who graduated from usuhs. Didn't go to OBC before it started. Didn't go before he graduated. He did the 12 week course during his research year

How long does it take to get orders? I was accepted over two weeks ago. They received my paperwork a few days after that, and I just got an email saying that my paperwork was received (I sent an email asking for verification) and will be looked at shortly. I'm trying to figure out when I need to quit work and plan my move, but it's hard when I don't know if I'll be going to Texas June 10th or not.

Welcome to the Army. Who knows when it will actually come through, or if it will. You can keep contacting whoever the POC is at HRC. I remember each service had their respective contact point. Unfortunately no good news. I know I had Navy classmates that were literally waiting for orders up to days before the report date for ODS. I'd talk to your boss at work and just let them know the situation and hopefully they'll be fluid/understanding of the situation. As far as the move....I remember there being time between OBC graduation and the school report date; you could try to plan your move then. Unfortunately if you live by yourself and don't have a significant other you'll end up paying rent on wherever you are living (assuming if you live with roommates that aren't a significant other they'll still expect you to contribute your rent).

I know this time of the year can be particularly frustrating but the best advice I can give you all is to be fluid and just roll with the inefficiency that is the bureaucracy of the Army (or any service).

I suppose you could also put your stuff in a storage unit and save cost, however I'm not sure if the Army will pick your stuff up from a storage unit and not a residence. You'd have to check on that.

The good news, if there is any from all this, is that if you don't have any prior service is that they're usually pretty good about getting your pay accurate and in a (relatively) timely fashion. If you have prior service good luck. If you're a ROTC or Academy grad it's hit or miss, there shouldn't be any difference in pay but the increased paperwork seems to sometimes fluster the admin staff.

If you're given the option of taking an advance on your pay it's not a bad idea. There's always a chance that your finance stuff gets messed up. If you're eligible (which, unless you've taken it out before, or have been in the army for awhile) I'd look at the USAA career starter loan. You used to be able to get 25k at like 2.5% interest over 5 years which will give you plenty of money to pay whatever bills you need paid/buy a car/put a big dent in undergrad loans. I think the interest rates have gone up but it's nice to have that financial security during this time of uncertainty.

why is finance more of a pain if you're prior service and how would one avoid that?

Since you go from whatever your rank is/was to a 2LT/2dLT/ENS with save pay it always seems to get messed up. This tends to be more of an issue from those going from O3/O4 to O1 with save pay. I remember them doing a pretty good job of getting the O1-E pay right for those with prior enlisted service. The only advice I could give you is to know what you should make and monitor every LES you get until you know your pay is squared away, which is totally reactionary not preventive. They'll eventually get it right but I know there were people into the MS2 year that hadn't been getting paid correctly. You'll get some pay, it just isn't always right, and it seemed to take longer to get it all set-up. For some reason this is an issue every year, or was in my 4 years there

Thanks for the heads-up. What is O-1E?

The first link, page 11, blue highlights tells you who qualifies.
Second link is the pay scale

Essentially if you've done 4 years and 1 day as an active duty enlisted soldier/sailor/airman/marine you get an additional 700 dollars a month. Over the course of med-school that's almost 40k. One of my best friends from med-school was prior air-force enlisted and did 4 years exactly on active duty. Doesn't qualify you. There's a guy one year ahead of me in residency, same story (not a USUHS grad), but you get "E" pay up through O4 i believe, definitely through O3, so he's missing out on 6 years of it. Over the course of med-school and your 6 years as a CPT/Capt/LT that's a not insignificant chunk of change.

It's just through O3
