2015-2016 Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
For those getting II's I would love to hear your stats, ECs that you thought were important or other strengths you believe got you a II. I bet I'm not the only curious one 🙂 USUHS is my top choice.

Oh and completion dates for those of you who did not already post that

Also, congrats to you, and best wishes for your interview!

Did everyone receive an email when their applications were completed?

My bad, I forgot they don't send automatic receipt confirmations

Hey @VitalBeansprout, if you don't mind could I ask what your MCAT is? I am a little worried about my MCAT since I did lower than average (29; v/r: 11, bs: 10, ps: 8) I originally thought it wasn't that bad so didn't retake but after being on SDN for a couple weeks I'm feeling less than adequate lol. Just wondering if our scores are similar and if I should expect the same inquiry here soon..if you do not mind sharing I would appreciate it 🙂

I'm vital's friend and he is busy so I'll reply for him. he got much lower than 29 and a 29 is a great score so don't fret.

Ok thanks @PureGRIT. You guys make me feel better. I also didn't think a 29 was bad, but people have made me feel otherwise. Guess I let myself get sucked into that neurotic SDN premed culture! (Not that everyone on here is like that, and I don't mean offense to anyone).

AMCAS verified 7/4. Secondary submitted 7/5. Complete email on 7/15. II on 8/4.

cGPA 3.67 sGPA 3.40 MCAT 27

I am currently an active duty service member in the U.S. Army and work in the medical field. I would be happy to answer any questions other applicants may have about the military in general or the Army in particular. Good luck to all of you!!

Actually, I did get a complete email once all my LOR's were submitted.

Interview invitation yesterday for Sept 17! This is my top school! Is anyone else here interviewing this date?

MCAT 33, GPA 3.99, 2000 hrs clinical, complete 7/22

FYI:

"Each year, the Admissions Committee interviews between 575-600 applicants and tenders approximately 300 offers to matriculate 171 students (approx. 63 Army, 51 Navy, 51 Air Force, and 4-6 Public Health Service) in the fall. Academically, the acceptees Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) and college grade point average (GPA) have been consistent in the past few academic cycles with an average GPA of 3.6 and an average MCAT score of 31."

Has anyone received confirmation from admissions advisor that II was received? I have asked if all my material had been collected with no response.

After emailing my photo, I got confirmation they had all of my materials.

I did, basically saying my last LOR was just uploaded and they should now all be accounted for.
I am in the same situation. I submitted my II first week of July and now my LOR are in as well. I asked if they had all my info, but with no response. Hopefully they got 'em all. I'm still waiting on mcat scores, so that may be part of it. I took it in July

I submitted secondary on 7/20 and my AMCAS was verified 7/28. All my LORs are in. I asked for confirmation a few days, and still have not heard back. I'm sure they are very busy right and that is probably the reason they haven't gotten back to us. I know I submitted all the materials, I just wanted confirmation because the submission of that secondary on the google form was a little weird to me. This time next week if no one has heard maybe someone should give them a call.

Who are your admission councilors if you don't mind saying? My last name starts with B.

I called my counselor to make sure they had everything and she said that they are really backed up right now. She said they don't have time to send out individual letters to confirm the completion of applications, but if you email them they will get to it asap. My counselor is Ms. Ferrell

I have called and emailed a few times and tried to get an update. I was only told my application is complete. Either I am not competitive or I have a much slower reviewer. The IIs are from people who were complete after me.

Is it worth still doing the secondary if it's past the 3 week turn around time ?

So you think it's okay to still send in the secondary even though it's past 3 weeks late?

you don't have anything to lose by submitting!

Fill it out anyway! And email your admissions counselor, it says you can request a deadline extension. Does anyone also happen to know, does the deadline include the picture or just the application?

Are any other interviewees having problems with DODMETS? This website is incredibly slow and doesn't save my info half the time. What a pain.

I am, it's at a crawl and seems barely functional. Worse than that, the place they are sending me to apparently doesn't actually answer the phone and you have to send them an email to schedule an appointment. A Gmail email. My confidence in this place is not very high based on just that. And I haven't actually received a response, of course. That doesn't help their case.

31 MCAT, sGPA 3.59, cGPA 3.62. Two clinicals (one was a surgery program, the other shadowing at an AF clinic) were probably both beneficial, but it's hard to point at anything in particular that was make-or-break. I have a long history with the Green Machine, so that probably helps, even though none of it was medical.

What is most important is having all your ducks in a row when you apply. Any box left unchecked (figuratively more than literally, but maybe literally, too) tends to be problematic.

Glad I'm not the only one. The website is terrible and I had to fill out the same info over and over, and then it would never populate that I had completed the section. Hopefully the office that does the physical will be a little more organized. It's a long drive for me though

@Glycereine do you know what the deal is for reapplicants for the physical exam? If you passed it during one application cycle, do we need to worry about it?

Not 100% sure but I do know we don't need to do the whole thing again. They said just some updates. I am hoping to get an interview soon. If I do I'll let you know!

The dodmerb exam is good for 2 years, so you won't have to redo it if you're now a repplicant who went through the exam process last cycle. Dodmerb will send you a form asking you to update them on any changes in your health since your exam. If nothing has changed, you're good to go. They'll review the form and send you the same "medically qualified" letter as last year.

Good luck everyone! Fingers crossed for all of you!

Then yes... Without knowing for sure I suspected last year that my application was moving much more slowly than others. It seems to be the case this time as well.

My last name begins with "L" and before applications season, she was quick to respond to my questions. But after a week she responded to my questions that my app was all in. I'm less worried now, but I realize they must just be backed up.

I don't think it's really that any counselor is slow or bad really. It just gets frustrating. I'm assuming the people with IIs had significantly stronger applications since several did their secondaries weeks after I completed mine. Hoping I can get an interview again this year and preferably before the spots are full unlike last year.

Is military medicine integrated into the pre-clerkship years? I went on their website but didn't find much information on this.

Yes. In October of MS1 you will be participating as casualty patients during Operation Bushmaster. If you join with the Army and go to their Basic Officer Leader Course (BOLC) over the summer the last 3 weeks you will be part of a mock field hospital. Also during the summer before MS2 you will be given the opportunity to participate in a variety of military medicine related activities that you can choose from. To name a few...

Primarily in the summers for the first part. More exposure to military medicine in the later years.

Can anyone comment on what USUHS likes to see for their diversity prompt?

I emailed my photo with some other information at the end of July and still have not heard anything.

I never received confirmation that I was complete. I submitted my secondary and sent a photo the second week of July.

I never received any confirmation about being complete and just got an interview yesterday. Not sure if they send complete notifications or not...

You know, after talking with my boss who used to be in the navy, two of my buddies in the army, and a few recruiters, I decided to apply here. Submitted 8/08. 32 MCAT 3.81 cGPA. Would love to get the opportunity to interview here!

Good to know! Thanks. Kinda stressin cuz I haven't heard anything haha. It seems like some people have gotten confirmation emails. But if you got an interview without prior confirmation, I'm not worried.
