2015-2016 University of Arizona Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
If it makes anybody feel better about Tucson's email problems, I just got a funny one from Phoenix. I was waitlisted at Phoenix and I withdrew from the waitlist. Then I got this email immediately from them..

"We are thrilled that you have chosen to hold your seat in the University of Arizona College of Medicine - Phoenix Entering Class of 2016. We look forward to having you back on campus in the near future, as well as building another amazing class of future physicians to serve our community.

Congratulations, again!"

Anyone know how many people have been accepted at Tucson so far?

Also, those of you who have been accepted to UACOM- tucson, do you plan on matriculating there?

We (COM-Phoenix) apologize for the mistake and have corrected the auto-reply received after the alternate decision is received by our office.

No idea on how many have been accepted, but I'm definitely planning on matriculating there. For reference, I received 8 II, attended 5 interviews (2 ranked in top 20 for primary care, 1 ranked top 20 for research), accepted at 3, rejected at 1, waiting on 1. I plan on withdrawing from everywhere else this week. Here are my reasons:

1) The faculty at UA Tucson were much more approachable than other schools I interviewed at. They weren't elitist, but were definitely on top of their game. Importantly, they had direct answers for every question I asked. There was no skirting the issue.

2) The students that I met seemed like they enjoyed being there, and even though it's a pass/fail, they seemed very driven and focused. This was different from two of the schools that I interviewed at that were pass/fail where the students seemed to take pride in the fact that they could "watch the lectures from home in pajamas and sleep in until noon" - direct quote... I don't want to be part of a program where students who are representing the university on interview day have this cavalier attitude towards their education. What does that say about the ones who aren't "representatives"?

3) There seems to be a good balance between research focus and clinical exposure. They aren't trying to pump out academic physicians, but if you want that route it seems to be very accessible.

4) From a personal side, and likely not relevant to many who don't have families, the CoA was very in line with living costs in Tucson. I don't have family money or a fat savings account, so having a family in tow and making the decision to live primarily off of loans for the duration of medical school, this was important to me.

Potential Cons:
I think Tucson lacks the massive healthcare centers that many of the other universities offer. I considered this carefully, because I believe that there is a lot to say for exposure to a wide array of cases that you would see in these other powerhouses. However, I believe that traveling for rotations in year 4 would definitely compensate for this, and having seen these systems while on interviews I definitely have an idea of what's out there and where I may want to go on my away rotations.

Just received a "you are not selected at this time" email. Finally received an update after 3 months.
Is that email different than the under review? I have received the under review email twice but interviewed a long time ago haha ugh

+1 first official update after the "under review" emails in 4.5 months

+2, interviewed late January but never received an under review email. Anybody know how likely we are to get an acceptance after 'not being selected' at this time, but before being placed on a waitlist? From what I recall from reading in this thread, most people who got accepted were outright accepted without receiving this type of email. Is this essentially leading to a spot on the waitlist...

I am in the same boat; having now received this email twice. In my opinion, I think it's a leading up to a wait list situation. If that is the case, I wish they would just wait list me or reject me if that's where this is eventually headed. I'm a big girl, I can handle it- I just can't stand the waiting anymore.

My student tour guide told us not to worry about these emails. He interviewed in August and received these emails once a month until the following April, when he was accepted without being put on the waitlist. It's one person's experience so take it with a grain of salt, but it gives me some hope!

Yeah, I received a you are under review once and just received that today.

I got the same two "under review " emails but today I received the "a round went out today but you were not selected at this time " 🙁

It looks like those of us who haven't interviewed recently will be reconsidered in March/April.

Does anyone know when the last interview date is?

Shoot still nothing for me besides the two old under reviews. Maybe I'll see if I was supposed to get that haha.

The last interview was Friday! 2/26/16

Does anyone know when second look is for Tucson? Do they time it so that all acceptances go out before second look so that all admitted students can attend?

Does anyone know if UA grading system is a true P/F or ranked? Thanks!

Any updates or acceptances? do you know when people on the WL are supposed to hear back?

they really only give updates every two weeks on fridays. the last acceptances were sent out approximately two weeks ago.

You've been placed on the waitlist already? I thought they hadn't placed anyone on the waitlist.
I think he/she probably meant the people who have received emails saying you are still under consideration. Last year, the waitlist was released in april...

Got the "not selected this time" again. So I don't think that it's the last set of decisions.
Also received it, so looks like there will be more acceptances. I think they're on spring break though, so it might be a couple weeks until we find out.

2nd years finish break this week and 1st years start next week. Who knows when Ad-COM goes on break but everyone should hear something more definitive by 4/1

Neurotic question inbound...

I'm currently working two jobs in Phoenix, and am trying to figure out concrete quit dates, a concrete "have signed lease in Tucson" date, and a concrete "move-in" date. I'm aiming for a move-in in early July so that I can keep working for as long as possible but still have a buffer zone to get acclimated to Tucson and all settled in. While trying to figure all of this out, I was looking at the academic calendar and it seemed like there were slight discrepancies between the academic calendar dates and the "save the dates" on the portal. Maybe there isn't a discrepancy and they are just giving different information but I figured I would see what you all think.

The portal states:
Orientation 2015 – Get ready for medical school! Orientation is July 27, 2016 - August 2, 2016. You will receive everything you need to begin school on Wednesday, August 3, 2016.

The academic calendar lists:
Introduction to the profession 07/25-07/29
Foundations beginning 08/01

And then due to the portal stating "Orientation 2015", I thought that maybe they just accidentally changed the years and not the dates, but when I looked at Class of 2019's first year schedule, their orientation and start date were completely different.

I think to be safe, you'd want to have the lease signed and ready to move in by July 15th. I'm not sure about the file that you linked, but maybe the medical student bridge program is some sort of "jump-start" or re-cap for non-traditional students?

I know I've planned to be out of the country until around mid July, so it would definitely put a hamper on my Euro-trip if classes begin earlier than the end of July!

Yes the Bridge Program is for ~25 students or so who wish to get back into the swing of things (mostly non-trads). I participated in it last year if anyone has any questions. I think as long as you're ready to be at school by July 25th, you should be fine.

Did anyone receive their award letter yet?

At the pre-interview reception they said they would send financial aid information/offers April 1st. And as for scholarships, those would have been sent within 2 weeks of getting an acceptance according to their brochure.

Does anyone know when it's the last day one can hold multiple acceptances? I read the traffic rules on AAMC and am still confused on whether its 4/30 or 5/15. Thanks!

I'm pretty sure it's 4/30. I think the earlier years had up to 5/15 but it's changed.

I'd love to know more about this program, either in the thread or via PM. I've been out of college for a few years and would love to know if this was helpful for you! 🙂

I was going through the Incoming Student form and saw "If you would like to be considered for the program please complete the Bridge form by Wednesday, May 25, 2016 at 11:59am. Notification of program acceptance will be released no later than Friday, June 3, 2016."

Figured I would post here in case anyone was considering it and didn't know about the deadline!

Anyone know when people who are still waiting will hear by? At this point, I'm not expecting much but still want to know.

I think we'll hear back the first week of April. Not expecting much either, but it's hard not to have some hope...
