2015-2016 University of Arizona - Phoenix Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe you receive a secondary as long as your MCAT score is 22 or above. Cumulative GPA requirement is 3.0 or above, per the website.
I was just asking if they do screening after secondaries too or is it just past this point and after secondaries, they process every applicant looking at personal statements and other aspects of the application?

Dr. Cunningham,

I will be interviewing at your university on October and I am very excited. I just have a quick question about the pre-requisites. When it says "2 courses from the following:cultural anthropology, economics, healthcare administration, psychology, public policy, sociology, family studies, political science, history, or behavioral health", does that mean that 2 psychology courses would fulfill this requirement? Or do we need to cover 2 of these areas?

Thanks so much!

We review post-secondary and I'll say this review is very thorough!

2 Psychology courses are acceptable.

Safe travels to campus next month!

Dr. Cunningham,
I completed the UA Phoenix Supplemental Application on 7/29 and haven't had any status changes since then. I know that it's been a relatively short time since my submission but the gulf between the head and the heart is the hardest to cross sometimes and I would appreciate any new information I could get about where my application is in the review process. Would it be a detriment to my application if I called to ask for an update?
Thank you for answering questions on the forum!

Nothing wrong with calling, but like a lab processing results you may not receive more than, "you're being processed; results not in." In this case, no news is good news in the sense that your file remains active. We communicate the next decision (interview) bi-weekly, release (pre-interview) monthly, but then there's the application that remains under review.

Hello all, for anyone interviewing on 28 Sept., I booked a hotel room in Phoenix for the night of 27 Sept. (Sunday) close to campus (~5 min. walk) with two beds if anyone is interested in splitting costs. Male, non-trad, LGBT-friendly. Please PM if interested.

Just submitted secondary this weekend. I know it's literally a shot in the dark as an OOS student, but this school seems really amazing and unique.

Dr. Cunningham,

I have a question regarding the pathways program. When do interviews generally start for that program?

Thank you for answering!

Is that when UA Phoenix releases post-interview decisions?
i think so- but i could be wrong. i know they also can keep your file and keep comparing it to other interview dates or give a straight out acceptance or rejection.

Pathway interviews occur in February and decisions roll out in March.

Admissions tracker updated yesterday...

Crazy that there's already that many applications, almost more than last year I believe.

Looks like a little less than half of the interviews have already been given out? But from what I've heard they may be scaling back on the number of interviews offered overall this year.

We are extending interview invitations at a slightly higher number than last year - 330 total for the year. ~300 were offered last year.

The lunch request email is a nice touch. 🙂

Thank you for the information, Dr. Cunningham!

Keeping my fingers crossed to hear about an interview invite from UA COM - Phoenix! 🙂 I might even burn all of my ASU clothing if it ends up coming in! 🤣

No need to do that - the dean of admissions is an ASU grad. Now you can rofl!!

The general rule of thumb is to interview 4x the size of your incoming class, so this would put us at 320 and yes, with 10 seats held for Pathway Scholars, this reduces our numbers even more. We also gain more "experience" in understanding our yield success from interviews and this means we are retaining more of our offers and still feel comfortable with the depth of our waitlist. Our inaugural year, back in 2006, we interviewed almost EVERY SINGLE applicant (shared the process with Tucson, so we didn't have an option to do things differently). But, there is an element of "fit" and mission-specific criteria that we have evolved into over these past 9 years. Just because someone applies does not make them a fit.

Now, here's the challenge. We have amazing applicants and we know this means we will not interview everyone. Of course we "could," but I really feel passionate that we should not do something just because we can...an interview is a very positive signal that you are an acceptable candidate and it cost you MONEY. Nearly 1/2 of our interviewees will receive an offer (outright or over the waitlist period), so to interview more than this seems, to me, very unfair and misleading.

I just wrote to my staff a list of things "not to do" on your supplemental essays. This is where I start my review for interviews and I just find it so unfortunate when students ignore the essay prompts and use the time to tell an elaborate story. We want you to answer the essay. If you do not, we will not invite you to interview. The supplemental is the only part of the application that is specific to us and if the student does not take advantage of this, it suggests we are just one of many schools they have applied and the interest is not genuine.

Hi Dr. Cunningham, is acceptance about 50% for out of state students after interviews too?

Thank you

What are some good things to see around the school?

Just a short cab ride away is Tempe, AZ which is near Arizona State University. There you'll find a lot of the action on Mill Avenue, which is a favorite of the undergrads in the area. On a Friday or Saturday night you'll find plenty of things to do including bars, restaurants and places with live music. Definitely give that a look!

What about Scottsdale (vs Tempe) for someone who isn't looking for an undergrad bar scene?

Ready for Review: 10 August 2015 --> cricket chirps
They've already chosen 1/3 of their OoS Interviewees. It seems that at this point I am most probably a plan B if any Out-of-State interviewees decide to reject their interviews. 😢

Simply disheartening.... :nailbiting:--> :arghh: --> :dead:

Hey, at least you have not received a pre-interview rejection!

Has anyone who has submitted late August/early September received any information yet (rejection or II)?

I am an AZ resident and was complete here on 8/20, but no word yet. Happy to be patient though - this program is my top choice by far!

Hello!

I was wondering if UA-Phoenix is receptive to in the area emails for interviews? Thanks in advance for your help! 🙂

Completed 7/10, in-state, I work AT the Wesley Community and Health Center with the current UACOM Phx med students and still haven't heard a word.. any other updates??

Nothing on my end, completed 8/17. I know some people who were complete on 8/15 and earlier ended up receiving rejections, so here's to hoping we made that cut and are on hold for an interview! Hard to tell. And I've been in communication with admissions with some other questions, they are very helpful and available. By far my best experience with an admissions office!

I was complete 8/4 and haven't heard anything either!!! Trying to patiently wait.. 🙂

I think this has been asked before but is UA Phoenix receptive to in the area emails?

It seems not based on this response from last year:

Congratulations on your COM-Tucson interview. Sequencing interviews is a challenge; unfortunately, we cannot make our decision based on your already scheduled visit to another medical school. In the event you are invited to interview at COM-Phoenix, I'd encourage you to request one of our student hosts to reduce your lodging expenses. This will make your visit a little more feasible.
