2015-2016 University of California - Davis Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I was just invited to interview at SJV Prime; however, I am on the waiting list. Does this mean anything?

The UC Davis med website also says only students that have been accepted are invited to interview at SJV. I am very confused.

This happened for the ACE-PC track as well. I am not sure why they are doing it this way...it is confusing. I heard that this year because of the large volume of applicants, some people were put on the waitlist first and once spots open up then they may get off. I don't know how accurate that is, but we'll see in a few weeks!

You are very decent to give up your extra spots a little earlier than necessary! Thank you from the wait listed people! Where will you be attending if you don't mind saying? Good luck to you!
Well, I'm actually headed to UCD unless I get off of the WL at one of my other places! I'm WL-ed at two top 15's. I would be thrilled to go to Davis, but for personal (support network, professional network, prefer the East Coast, family, etc) reasons, I'd like to be at one of the two I'm waitlisted at!

So, I'm hoping I have WL movement so that I can give my spot to one of you!

Can any current students speak to the daily/weekly course schedule? How many lecture hours per day/week etc.

They're changing the curriculum of Block 1 this year to frontload anatomy and backload physiology, so not sure how relevant my summary of the Block 1 schedule will be BUT:

We had mandatory anatomy 6 hours/week (3 hours Tues, 3 hours Thurs - this may increase due to the frontloading).
Doctoring - where you learn history taking, physical exams, do fun simulations in the Center for Virtual Care/Center for Health Technology - is usually 3 hours/week.

Everything else, besides the occasional physiology TBL/biochemistry journal club, is optional and recorded, though your big may recommend you attend some things (like I'd highly recommend attending anatomy lecture/histology lab).

Block 2:
Doctoring still at 3 hours/week.

Our endocrine/reproduction/genetics/nutrition class had a lot more mandatory TBLs/small groups, but all lectures were again, optional and recorded. Note - you only have to attend 75% of the TBLs/small groups to pass (and Davis is unranked so who cares if you only pass). I'd estimate like 4 hours of mandatory TBLs/small groups/week.

Basic pathology (only the first half of block 2) had one VERY EFFECTIVE mandatory TBL per lecture. Say 2-4 hours/week.

Microbiology/immunology (only the second half of block 2) thus far have had one joint 2 hour TBL/week; everything else is optional and recorded. I will often not go to class 3/5 days a week. Only 2 hours/week.

Pharm has nothing mandatory AFAIK.

tl;dr: You determine your lecture hours. Block 1 = ~9 hours/week mandatory stuff (may change); first half of block 2 is ~9-11 hours week mandatory stuff; second half of block 2 is 5 hours/week mandatory stuff. LMK if you have more questions.

Thank you so much for your response, for some reason I was under the impression that it was basically M-F (9-5). This was very helpful.

Friend of mine got in today, too. I'm curious why they suddenly started taking people off the waitlist before April 30? But then again, I've given up trying to understand how anything in the medical school admissions process works...

People who are holding multiple acceptances have until 4/30 to decide, but they don't have to wait another 2 weeks if they are sure where they will go...

Oh the reason I'm confused is that the initial waitlist notification I received said that they were unable to offer acceptances to individuals on the waitlist until after April 30.

Anyone have their financial aid package yet?
They haven't been released yet because they don't have their budget finalized yet according to the financial aid office. I think someone said they usually come out in June (!).

Someone on the Facebook page told me they usually get it in June and when I talked to financial aid, it didn't sound like they planned on releasing it before April 30th which is a bummer because it is one of my deciding factors for that April 30th decision!

Maybe that's when returning students get it? When I called way back about it, they said last year it came out REALLY close to the end of April but they were trying to be faster this year... :/

That would be great! I was under the impression that this person was an M1 last year but I could have assumed that.🙂 They did give me an estimate of what my financial aid would be based on the information they had but I'm really hoping my package is better than that because it wasn't much help at all.:-/

The financial aid ladies told me that basically everyone who applies for it gets offered a series of grants that comes out to be about $25k over four years. People with more need can get offered more, including a few people getting full tuition. And I think there are a few scholarships?

But of course this may vary year to year. This was just what I was told on the phone, not in writing.

I was just checking out the outside scholarships page today. Looks like many of the dates have passed already but next year we can get in there! I am going to attend 2nd look next week and see what the have to say about financial aid then too.

I got the call this morning at 8:04! I'm off the wait list! Good luck to everyone!! So ecstatic

I am on the waiting list for UC Davis but got an interview to SJV Prime last week. I have not heard my decision about the prime program yet, but I was invited to the prime programs second look on Tuesday, and the email says that decisions have not been made. Does anyone know anything about this? Or in the same boat?

Is anyone going to say prime second look tomorrow? If so, what do we wear since the email did not specify.

What did others wear to second look?

Would any MS-1 be willing to tell us specifics about the curriculum? Like how many days/hoursdo you go to lecture/labs? Are there any small group discussion lessons? Do you buy books or study from material provided by instructors? When do you start having clinical experiences (outside of student run clinics)? Standardized patients? Anyone in the global health program can tell us about your experience/program?
What are your favorite and not so great things about the program?
How has your experience being so far? How would you describe the student body/morale of your class?
Thank you so much!!!

Does anybody know if they generally make all the calls in one day?
