2015-2016 University of California - Irvine Application Thread

For the activities section of the secondary, did anyone list more than the three most meaningful activities you designated on your primary?

Also, should I just copy and paste the activity title I had in my primary? Thanks!

hey does uci send reject letters to those not receiving a secondary applucation?

Yeah, I'm curious about this too...my primary was received awhile ago, but no updates about the secondary yet 🙁

I think this part is just for interviewers to look at and ask questions about so choose whatever you feel comfy mentioning in an interview. Might be able to add other stuff that is relevant but not on your app as well.

I just called the admissions office, and she told me that she's not allowed to tell me what to put 😵 in regards to whether I should put my three most meaningful activities or pick and choose more than that. I'm going to list several more as well as my new activities!

Did anyone put more detailed titles than what was on their primary? Such as including organization name in your title..

AMCAS verified on 6/23 and no secondaries from any of the UCs!! Really bummed...

Not sure if this is going to help much, but I remember an Adcom from UCI came to give a talk at my school, and she said that when you're verified doesn't really matter as long as it's before the date AMCAS begins delivering apps, because it will be delivered out of order most likely. So she said "luck of the draw" in terms of who gets read first. BUT, apparently order will matter in terms of when you're verified once AMCAS begins delivering apps (only if you're verified after)

I've been verified sine 7/6, have a 31+ mcat, and a 3.7+ gpa. Still no secondary..... Should I call the admissions office?

Dude same here! And I know my stats should be good enough for any "cut off" they might have!!!! Really getting frustrated

To my knowledge, the UC schools do a more holistic screen than just an academic cut-off. UCI gets over 6000+ applications and they only give secondaries to about 3500.

Also, I'm assuming that UCI sends out secondaries in batches; I just popped over to the UCR thread and they give secondaries through late September.

It's still really early to start freaking out! Mine was verified the very first day (6/2) and I just got the secondary like last week!

I am having a hard time with that one too, since most of my major accomplishments were academic-research related. Maybe I'll talk about my own business that I had when I was "younger" and was very profitable, or I can get serious and talk how I was able to help my mom financially after I left my house and started to work two jobs when I was under 18 ............ I just feel that an "accomplishment" in the context that they are asking entails something that you had to put a considered amount of time and effort.....

Maybe I'm reading into it to much, but does "personal accomplishment" exclude academic accomplishments? I'd like to talk about how I'm proud of my academic achievement given that I entered college having done independent study since grade school to focus on sports.

Hope we hear something soon! It's weird we haven't even got secondaries when some are getting IIs!!

I am a re-applicant and last year I approached this question in that way. Upon in reflection I realized that most of pre-med students have stellar academic achievements in their field, either undergrad or throughout research. A lot of us had to work multiple jobs while attending undergrad classes. Not to say it is not a personal achievement to succeed academically while juggling other aspects of our lives, however IMHO sounds too general because most people do it. Once I spoke to a doctor who is very well renowned in her field and she told me that her biggest personal achievement was having 2 kids. I am approaching this question in a more personal level this time. I chose a challenge that was very personal to me and overcoming it made me real proud of myself. Like I said this is my humble opinion. Maybe someone with more experience could chyme in.

Mmm, I think I read someone post earlier in this forum that under their application status, it said "Not Awarded" if they didn't get an interview so while I'm not sure if they specifically send out rejection letters, I think you'll know if you're out of the running if you keep checking the application status?

Hey, for the "activities section" of the secondary
Did you guys just put the activity name and your title, or did you explain what did you do briefly?

Hello all! Soon to be MS1 at UCI here. Just wanted to say, don't be alarmed if you don't hear back right away after you submit your secondary. No news is good news. As long as your interview status does not change to "Not Awarded" or you receive a rejection email, you are still in the running! I remember submitting my secondary last year around this time and seeing other people get awarded interviews right away yet I did not hear peep. I checked the application status page religiously for months. Lo and behold, I received an interview invite at the end of October! I think the way that it works is that they continue to review your application from time to time if you don't receive an interview invite right away. As long as you are not rejected, you are still under consideration and there is hope for an ii. They didn't forget about you so don't worry!

Application submitted 7/16 but still under review. My status message has updated though so it looks like I'm currently on hold ("*Review in progress. We ask for your patience while we thoroughly review your application. A final decision concerning your interview status will be made by April 1st.")

And congrats on those who got II's!

I've had that since the day I submitted it, so I'm unsure if it means a hold

My first message was that they were going through applications on a rolling basis so I should be patient and now I have that new message..../shrugs Maybe I am slowly becoming neurotic and over-analyzing everything 😕

(Since they're reviewing on a rolling basis, people who got II's after submitting on the 17th must mean my app has already been reviewed...unless they've got a beef against UC alums and will look at mine later lol)

I'm sorry bud. With a score like that you're gonna get in somewhere great! Did they send you an email?
Yup, got an email a few mins ago. It's sad because this was one of my top choices and was super close to home.

Best of luck to everyone!!!

Wait, doesn't everyone have this message? I thought it was completely normal since some of my other schools have also added new messages onto their webpages. I also have this note with a red asterisk as of sometime last week, I think. Does everyone who submitted a few weeks back but hasn't heard yet have this note? Or any other MSTPs -- maybe we all have it as they review MD/PhD applications?

Agreed with the above though for sure -- congratulations to all of the IIs out there!!!

EDIT: I also received a new message on the top left of the page at the same time. It says, in red, "After November 15, click here to activate your UCINetID. As you progress through the admissions process, you may need your UCINetID to access University Systems, e.g. Financial Aid."

I have that red message on the top left corner as well. But as I had mentioned in a previous post, my first status message mentioned something about applications being reviewed on a rolling basis and now I have the message that apparently everyone else has...

Sorry, got excited lol. Yes, that's exactly the progression that my application went through as well. Not sure what it means, but hopefully we all hear good news soon! 🙂

Yup, fingers crossed for some good news! I feel like with med apps, silence can be a good thing. Since people who submitted later than I have already gotten II's, I'm assuming they've already reviewed my app and have it on hold since I haven't gotten a rejection email...yet. lol

Has anyone not gotten a secondary from here yet? I was verified 6/17 and have secondaries from Riverside and SD but not from here, Davis, LA, or SF.

+1 (exact same situation - only have UCR and UCSD)

I only got UCI and UCSD and am still waiting on UCR, UCSF, and UCLA. From what I understand, anyone who was verified in June is not necessarily reviewed in the order they were processed so it's completely normal if some people who were verified in late June just happened to be processed by the UC's before people verified in early June. The UC's, like most other schools, can only send out so many secondaries at a time, and batches are given out throughout August as well. Just gotta be patient 🙂 In the meantime, work on pre-writing so you can submit your secondaries asap once you get them! ^___^

I don't if this is just me, but I didn't receive an email from UCLA. I happened to check my application status and it showed that secondary had been requested.

Hmm that's really odd that they would expect everyone to just check their status...and you didn't get the email in your spam? One of my secondaries came in through my spam box.

Yep, checked it, and checked trash too. Did you check your UCLA app?

I have a question for you all. I wasn't going to apply here because I saw that there are very few OOS students according to MSAR. But reading though this thread is making me wonder if I should. My brother is a grad student at UCI and I would love to live near him again! 3.72 uGPA/ 3.82 sGPA/ 514 (33) MCAT, if that's of any use to you.

Yeah I just checked the portal and all of my fields are blank so I'm assuming I haven't been awarded a secondary yet. Wow can you imagine if I was awarded one and had absolutely no idea?! Thanks for pointing that out!

I don't think your chances are very good but go ahead and apply! you certainly have a reason to.

I'm OOS, so my chances from here on out are probably pretty slim, but I'm still totally psyched! Just got the secondary!

+1

I'm OOS with LizzyM 67-70, with some ties to UCI and unique ECs. Glad I made the cut! I sort of forgot I applied here though, so I didn't pre-write. Darn this first prompt.
