2015-2016 University of Central Florida Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
@REL is question 3) optional, or do people usually fill this portion out? What is the recommended length for responses to 1) and 2) ?
1 and 2 are short answer, I dont recall the actual length, but 500 words MAXIMUM seems to ring in my brain. 3 is optional, we dont care to read anything duplicated.

Excellent. Thank you so much!

Does UCF send out secondaries to applicants without an MCAT score? I took mine June 20th.

REL any chance for clarification at to what constitutes unique, high-level accomplishments that are NOT included in your AMCAS application.

Am I right to guess that these are not such things as president's list and other normal academic awards.

I'm a bit confused. If you don't want information duplicated, then is there any issue with mentioning the same ECs except different characteristics and information about them?
Seems to me you answered your own question.....mentioning the same EC's with different characteristics seems like it is not the same.....therefore new, therefore may be worth including??

Yes, remembering that this is during the (often short) timeframe between submitting AMCAS and this Supplemental Application, there may not be anything to add. If the gap is longer there may be something such as you have mentioned, or a high-level research award, elected student body president, maybe you were a member of the Womens Soccer Team that just won, etc.

You can always submit up to three additions to your file after AMCAS and the Supplemental have been submitted by attachment to your Admissions Dashboard.

UCF is worth it, trust me. 😉 Their interview day was phenomenal.

And FYI it's pretty much the same secondary as UCSD and Vanderbilt. Good luck!

So assuming you applied UCSD, did you basically use the same secondary? I'm tempted to use the same one..because my "why medicine" and "what led me there" was pretty strongly emphasized in the PS, so it felt redundant to state again. I briefly gloss over it in the last paragraph of my UCSD prewrite...but the details are in my PS. I went more into my past and stuff (because I actually wrote it for UCSD, but feel that it works just as well for UCF too). Although that essay is like autobiography-ish...do you think I can just recycle?

Hi, I'm currently working on the secondaries (received July 7th), and on the activities section, on new medical/community volunteering, I'm scheduled for training for hospice volunteering/reading tutoring later this month, and to start (presumably) next month. I'm in my gap year, already volunteering and shadowing, so how should I put down these other activities? Should I mention them in #1, then add more details in the activities section? Thanks

It is fine to project activities, but you would have to use one of your 3 updates to let us know that you actually did them, to what extent, etc.

@REL If my status is "Hold for Information" does that mean admissions is waiting on something from me still? I called to leave a message today, but I have a letter writer who is no longer reachable (leave of absence) but I cannot remove his letter from AMCAS now that it has been submitted. I have another letter already submitted to cover his missing one. I am hoping that won't hold things up.

edit: UCF just called me back and I read into the status too much/too little. It says that they need to manually review and I saw that as a blanket statement not part of my status. My reading for comprehension skills failed me this time.

Thanks REL. Also, for online classes, what would be considered important information to add?

Secondary submitted 7/9. Got an email saying my file is ready to review and a decision will be made in 10-15 days. This process is going to kill me

@REL how strict are the LOR requirements?? I have 5 LORS I can use, but 4 are academic based and only 1 is character based, is thing going to be a big deal? Or should I actually get a friend/academic peer to write me a letter like it suggests?

Best bet is to get the two character letters that way a committee member "legalist" doesnt have any grounds to complain. Good options for character letters as a physician that you shadowed or someone else outside of academia that can tell us about who they perceive that you are and what you have done. This means maybe a supervisor or leader of a group that you were in, clergy, objective peer.

Hey @REL , I will be a re-applicant and wanted your advice on whether I should apply this cycle or after completing my one year master's program. The feedback I got from your school for this past cycle was my academics were less than average, but everything else was good. I was thinking of sending updates once I receive my first set of grades in October, but wanted your input. Thanks
This is always tricky because the committee will only see the fall term grades. So if one semester will support a positive trend it may be helpful this year, if not your chances are not good this year but better the next cycle.

Okay :/, thanks for the reply!! 🙂

Would it matter if both of the character letters come from people in the same organization in participated in?

Just started looking over the secondary. What sort of things do they want in the "describe what you have done to strengthen you candidacy" and what are some good things to include in that? Should I also include what I've learned from each activity?

It is asking what you have done to improve since you last applied if I am recalling correctly. So you will want to include any improvements in GPA, activities, etc. I wouldn't discuss anything that's the same though.

I'm not sure about what you've "learned" unless you feel like your non-acceptance last cycle was a result of something lacking in that respect.

IIRC I don't recall filling in the strengthening question given that it was the first time I applied to UCF, and so if it doesn't apply, you probably don't need to fill it in. Otherwise, as Glycereine mentioned, GPA improvements, MCAT improvements, new EC's, new degrees etc so long as it's not fluff that wastes the time of the reader

Anyone that has submitted the secondary, has your status changed yet from under review? (i.e. to competitive or noncompetitive for interview)

On that note, I just updated my photo on the site which may have been a huge mistake. It changed my completion date to today so hopefully it didn't move me to the back of the queue...

For some reason I just imagine this as a stack of apps and suddenly someone singles yours out and puts it on the bottom

My status was "under review" and now that line is blank! I really hope that's not a bad thing. Anyone else have that occur?

your status actually went to "under review?"

Mine has said "ready for review" for several weeks...
My status was "under review" and now that line is blank! I really hope that's not a bad thing. Anyone else have that occur?

edit: This may seem like a silly question, as under my "File Complete - Ready for Review" status, it does say "Your file is actively being reviewed by 3 separate members of the Admissions Office Review Team for Applicants. This review may take up to 15 businesss days. Upon completion your status may be AORTA - Eligible for Interview Selection or Not Competitive for an Interview."

so I am thinking it's the same thing, but I'm curious if others' actually say "Under Review"

My bad, it said the "File Complete, etc" as well. I was just concerned because that message has now disappeared.

I'd be a little bit worried as well but my guess is that they are finished reviewing yours and haven't put in the new status yet? Perhaps it's because you're about to get an interview invite!

If it is an update, when was your application complete. It would be interesting to where they are at. I was complete on 7/9.

I just refreshed the page and now my status has returned to "FILE COMPLETE - READY FOR REVIEW", it was completed 7/10.

I think they said they will let us know if we are competitive or not in 15 business days from submission.

You were probably experiencing one of those 2-4 minute periods when the system is doing a sync. this is set to occur every 4 hours at 8am, noon, 4pm, 8pm, etc. During those few minutes the status will not be visable.

Update - AORTA - ELIGIBLE FOR INTERVIEW SELECTION - yay for progress.

when were you all complete if you don't mind me asking?

Did you all get e-mails when your status changed?

Also, does anyone know last year's interview rate off of the EFI list? Just curious!
