2015-2016 University of Chicago (Pritzker) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
At this point I'm pretty dead set on Pritzker, and I feel like I heard them say something about research opportunities before M1 starts. Does anybody remember/have any info on starting research before school starts or am I making this up?
There was a guy in my class who did this. But...my (extremely strong) advice would be to not do this. Take a break. Enjoy life. Travel. There are plenty of opportunities to work hard in Med School.

Completely agree with what had been posted already. Relax, take some time off, do something fun, and don't worry about school. There will be plenty of time to do any number of academic activities after starting school if that's a priority to you. Give yourself a mental health break and be ready to hit the ground running in August.

I'm trying to get a good sense of cost of living/expenses outside of tuition. With the full-tuition scholarship, could I get by 12-15K in loans per year? Which year is usually most expensive, 3rd/4th?

The sample reflects my situation pretty well. I probably pay more for rent than most(but certainly not all people) so you can certainly save in the living expenses category. I guess you could forgo most books and personal expenses also. Since I got significant aid and am going to walk away with lower loans than most medical students, I have been taking out the full COA( - scholarship) and have not been worried too much about reducing my loans but it can certainly be done.

Guys. I don't even know why I haven't withdrawn from everywhere else yet. I love this school and I've basically already made up my mind lol. Just want April to come to make it official.

I'd wait to see what offers come in (e.g. aid packages), but if you're certain this is the place for you and you've got a full ride (I don't remember whether you do or not), then there's no point in really waiting to pull the trigger--might as well just do it now. Either way, congrats! It's an awesome school!

To reply to a couple of questions that have been posted - 4th year is definitely the most expensive, because of the added costs of interviewing, applying for residency, and paying for step 2. And you still are paying for four quarters of school.

Full tuition is basically exactly what it says - tuition is covered regardless of cost increases. Other stuff (rent, etc) is not covered. Basically this amounts to value >200K. Unless things have changed, I believe you'll get something in the mail or email that has detailed information on the scholarship.

Was continued in December and just wondering if they continued everyone at that point or if anyone was rejected post interview (aka should I be happy that I was at least continued)?

Any recommendations on getting to campus from Midway Airport? How safe is it to take the #55 Garfield bus? How's the local area?

was put on hold either Thursday or Friday of last week, surprised to get II today... complete mid-August. not sure about the purpose of the hold

Hi - I've lived in the area (Hyde Park) for a number of years. Hyde Park is like a bubble, the neighborhood itself is great – just the surrounding areas are not, but that's Chicago. Midway airport is west of hyde park - so you'd be taking the #55 east through some sketchy areas. That being said in the morning its fine - just depends on your comfort level with "urban" areas!

An alternative would be to take the orange line towards downtown and get off @ the Harold Washington Library stop and then take the southbound #6 or #28 from Jackson and State. You could also get off @ Roosevelt and take the 192 (towards UChicago Hospitals, this bus runs only for limited AM hours though).

And obviously you could take an uber or lyft. PM me if you have any more questions.

I generally recommend people new to Chicago to take the Orange Line and then come down on the 6(or 4 or 192 or 10). I have had plenty of applicants who were staying with me take the 55 without issue but some of them were a little caught off guard regarding the areas it goes through.

A cab from midway is about 25$

Any chance of us hearing back earlier than the 22nd as we were told? Noticed interviews end the 28th of January. Really hope we get surprised somehow and we hear back earlier since the wait's been killing me so far (about 2 months?)

I would hope interviews don't end the 28th as mine is in February

Well they're probably supposed to end on the 28th. But by the looks of your MDapps, you probably got a special day because you're just a superstar who interviewed at pretty much every top school so they had to make room for you:claps:

Hey y'all – Kept my Chicago involvement quiet b/c someone identified me after self-intros during the interview day and that creeped me out (she's super nice and now we're friends so it's all good). lmaoooooooo this is what I get from trying to be helpful on MDApps sigh

Just withdrew my acceptance here this morning. Basically I have plans to do certain things in med school that the Pritzker folks were not too fond of. After confirming this post-acceptance over the past month and seeing how accepting my other schools were, on top of the skimpy scholly (my grades suck I guess lol) with no guarantees of further aid, it was easy to give up the spot to someone else especially since the school is so small and I know there are people out there dying to get in

Hope someone benefits from this in the next batch of acceptances! Best of luck to all 🙂 :luck: :highfive:

Ok now I'm super curious about these plans. Hope you find a good fit!

What were these plans? Just curious, I promise I won't try to defend the school or shoot you down or anything 😛

Anyone know what the cheapest way is to get from midway to the Pritzker area?

Where can you purchase tickets for the buses?

Where can you purchase tickets for the buses?
For the bus you can just pay 2.25 (bring exact change) when you get on. The tickets (purchased at CTA terminals including the one in the airport) would cost you the same so just pay when you get on!

Anyone knows if I can send a post-interview update and if so, where to?

Anyone know when the committee meets for February decisions?

True, just wanted to see if it makes sense to send an update letter before I hear back or save it as a post wait list update.
