2015-2016 University of Colorado Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So is it correct to say that following the initial 184 acceptances, the following acceptances have been waitlist acceptances?

No I don't think so. They had given 232 acceptances out as of the 21st, 10 days before the wait list was sent out. The WL hasn't even been finalized yet because everyone has until tomorrow to respond.

Well, I guess I'm thinking about it different than how I previously posted. Do you think that out of the ~200 on the waitlist, those accepted so far have been taken from that list they already created a few weeks back? So, even though they just released the waitlist information, do you think that people have already come off that prior to the official waitlist notice being sent out to applicants? Basically, maybe recently accepted people were on the school's waitlist, but it was prior to the official notice being sent out

I think it's just that they give more acceptances than they have seats (like overbooking an airplane, which is commonly done) because they know that X% of those accepted will turn it down. The fact that they always have to dip into the waitlist despite accepting well over the amount of people they actually have seats for, bears that out. A wild-ass guess on my part would be that probably about half of the offered acceptances get turned down?

It's hard to see high-stat applicants are being put on mid-tier WL.

I was a fairly high stat applicant last year and I ended up on the LOWER third waitlist at UCD. Because stats aren't everything, and my application had other problems. I spent the time in between addressing them, and this year I got in. I wouldn't recommend anyone get too discouraged by late-game rejections and waitlistings; percentage wise, that means you're CLOSE, you just need to nudge your application up a few more points and you'll be where you need to be next year. And one extra year isn't the end of the world.

This. CU could easily fill a class with high MCAT and high GPA like a school such as Wash U but they put a much higher emphasis on other factors. I can tell you what makes my class great isn't their test scores. it is that they are genuinely interesting people.

So is it safe to assume that if we did not receive a waitlist email last week that we've been rejected?
I haven't received any emails (yes I checked my junk/spam folder). I called the admissions office and I was told to send an email to the admissions office. I thought that was weird. I sent an email and have yet to receive a reply.
I have to say I'm a little annoyed by the whole thing. It should be common courtesy to actually reject/waitlist someone.

They will respond eventually. If you are middle or low tier just put it in your mind that you are not getting in and focus on your application for next year. Its better to prepare and not keep your hopes up. I hold no illusion of middle/low tiers getting in. I knew 4 high tiers ppl last yr and only one got in. Last year they made 316 offers. This year they have given out 255 to date. That is 61 remaining.

This school's admission process is really not applicant friendly. Better communication and some transperancy would improve things significantly. Good luck to everyone still hoping to get in. Thankfully, I'm going to my state school but I still felt the need to share my opinion. #GoSioux 😉

Tell me about it. I already had a bad feeling about this when they gave me the wrong interview date and didn't tell me until after I bought a non-refundable travel package of flights, hotel, and rental car for three. But glad I received some closure as I was rejected without being waitlisted despite thinking I had my best interview here...

Hey!

Just wanted to say that all of your comments have been very helpful. Thanks for all of the help so far.

I was hoping y'all could clarify another thing for me... I took my MCAT in May 2014. I am gearing-up to reapply, but I am somewhat confused if my MCAT score is still valid for CU. They say that it's good 3 years prior to the date of matriculation (Fall 2017). That's a 3.5 year gap. The dates given on their website make it seem like my score would be valid, though. I'm pretty confident that it is valid, but I want to make sure I'm not being an idiot*.

Also, even if my score is valid, does anyone recommend re-taking it? Does the MCAT 2015 have more pull? I doubt that my score would increase significantly; it's just a question of perception.

Matt (3.68 GPA, 34 MCAT, medium-priority wait list, CO resident, *potential idiot)

Does anyone know if there has been any movement on the waitlist?

IS on the 'top priority' WL here.. Is everyone on the top third of the WL considered top priority? Is that different than the people that called themselves high priority WL from last year's thread?

I'd like to say I'm not scrutinizing every word of that WL email but like.. I'm scrutinizing every word of that WL email

I'm top third, and it says "top priority" as well. I would expect that to be the same for everyone in the top third, or else that would be pretty sneaky haha.

Did anyone else who applied for scholarships get the "you are an alternate" email? Wondering if this is something they just tell everyone who didn't get selected for a scholarship.

When I applied last year I never got one.

I also received that email today. Was kind of wondering the same thing.

I applied too but I haven't received an email at all. Anyone know of a decision deadline? It seemed unclear to me when the decisions would be made/made available to us.

They said that decisions had been made for all scholarships except the CMS one, which will be announced soon.

Do we need to buy our own supplies (stethoscope, bp cuff, etc)? I know some schools give you that stuff at the beginning

You get a stethoscope at white coat donated by the alumni association. That is really all that you absolutely need (They will suggest getting a BP cuff and an otoscope/opthalmascope but that is entirely unnecessary and I have yet to need them).

I've been more anxious since I was placed on the wait list and was wondering how everyone else in my boat has been handling it? I was placed in the top third of the list and the email was very optimistic but I don't want to get my hopes too high. Also, should wait list movement start next week since today was the deadline for holding one acceptance or will offers be extended a few weeks later?

From my understanding (which is limited to my thought process and this forum) it should be almost like a cascade starting over the next few days to a week (remember since it was a Saturday, Traffic day was actually delayed until tomorrow) meaning that an initial wave should be sent offers due to declined seats from Traffic day. Following that a smaller number (as some are accepted and some declined) will be offered based on those who declined the Traffic Day acceptances. So on and so forth until they fill the class. Offers will potentially be extended up to the end of the first week of class in order to fill seats or if people drop out in that first week. As far as reapplying, this is currently the only wait list I am on (high priority also) and I'm getting together my materials for reapplying for the next cycle. I know its hard to do with the possibility of acceptance still out there but if I get rejected I still want the best chance next year which means getting my primary and secondaries in early. As far as literal anxiety, do whatever you like to do in your free time, don't let this hamper you! Enjoy yourself! If you got onto a wait list here I'm sure you will get into medical school whether that be here this year or in subsequent years here or elsewhere so make the most of your time until you matriculate! =)

P.S. Good luck to you too! I like the username!

I'm planning on starting to work on my app once the cycle opens. I have been volunteering more and have more experience as a scribe to talk about but other than that I don't know if my application is significantly improved. I've been debating taking summer courses to boost GPA or retaking the mcat to try and do better but idk if those are worth it since I'm on the wait list. I just don't know what adcoms look for in reapplicants.

Leadership and volunteering are definitely things CU emphasizes and are the things that yield the difference between acceptance vs waitlist or rejection. Unless your GPA and MCAT are well below average there are probably other areas that are higher yield to improve.

I'm wondering if we are all just unlucky and there was minimal movement or they just haven't extended offers yet... maybe they are waiting to see if accepted students are taking offers from other waitlists before they start extending offers. I'm glad I'm not the only anxious one.

Keep in mind that acceptances are decided at committee meeting so just because there are spots available it doesn't mean they have met to decide how to allocate them.
Anybody have an idea when the next committee meeting is?

This is nothing but conjecture but I assume Friday? During interviews they met every other Friday so I assume the Friday after April 30th would be a logical time for them to meet. If that's the case we will have to suffer clear till next week.

Hey everyone...just wanted to chime in and offer my congratulations to those who are accepted and empathy to those on the wait list. I was high priority wait list last year...I did eventually end up getting in but it was late into the summer and I had already turned in all my secondaries for the next round. I know the anxiety is brutal, but do you best to keep your mind off it. There really is no way to predict when they will call or how much movement there will be. Enjoy your summer as much as you can! Feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions. And good luck to all!

Did anyone else just receive another prereqs email? Nearly gave me a heart attack.

In other news I figure I'll give everyone a laugh. Yesterday I received a phone call from "Unknown". Being overly anxious I somehow extrapolated that somewhere at some point I had seen that CU calls from an "Unknown" caller ID when they hand out acceptances. I picked up the phone and literally choked while saying hello. The person said hello and then asked "do you know who it is?". I thought it was weird that the admissions representative would say that in response but I was too excited to care so I figured they were playing around with me to make me happy so I responded almost excessively ecstatically "Is it the University of Colorado?!?!?!?!?" "No why would it be them... its your friend Pat calling from Denmark on Skype." "DARN IT PAT!" I've never gone from getting a rush like that to dropping back down so fast in my life.

Case in point I'm way too on edge right now haha. Regardless thank you @catkinney for the advice, you're absolutely right!

Well if it's any consolation, a couple weeks after my interview I got a call from an unknown Aurora, CO number. So naturally I'm already freaking out and the women on the line introduced herself as a representative from the University of Colorado School of Medicine....at this point I'm waiting for the glorious offer of admission that has been so elusive. But the nice lady continues to inform me that the university is conducting a health study and is looking for CO residents to participate and wanted to know If I would be interested....Needless to say, that phone call added a few grey hairs

Oh man yeah that'd get me even more!

So, I received an email about pre req deficits that says I'm missing 0.6 semester hours of organic Chem.
I went to a quarter school and took two quarters of o Chem lecture and one quarter of o Chem lab.
For some reason, the o Chem lab is worth only 3 units instead of four, putting me at 11 total quarter units for o Chem. I think this is because an early Chem lab I took was half o Chem and half gen Chem, but was labeled gen Chem.

Anyone have any experience with this? Is there a formal process to petition or something?

Thanks!

I would call admissions first to explain/see what they can advise

Withdrawing from my acceptance due to waitlist movement. Very sad to be leaving CU, but I am glad to know that my spot will go to one of the exceptionally deserving people of the waitlist. Best of luck to everyone!

Also, to next year's applicant pool stalking this thread: to the best of your ability, stay off of SDN. Breathe, laugh, and go live your life. You will be healthier for it.

I'm being selfish and hoping I get your spot lol. Were you accepted to CU off the waitlist or was it right after your interview? Thanks!

Accepted during the regular cycle, around the middle of February. Good luck!

Anyone have any input on how receptive the Admissions Committee is to updates/LOIs/additional LORs? Couldn't find any information on the website and I know some schools love it while others see it as more of an annoyance.

For some context, OOS, middle tier waitlist here. Not really banking on an admission but I'd rather work on sending in some stuff than just twiddling my thumbs.

I asked the office a few months back, and they unfortunately do not accept any updates. I think it's just a policy aimed at reducing volume of materials constantly flowing into their office.

To those fortunate souls who have already been admitted, have you received any word as to what branch you've been assigned? If I recall correctly they said that branch selection would be sometime in May.

They mentioned that last week they started meeting about selecting people for CSB. I would imagine that decisions would go out in a week or 2.

I spoke with Dr. Wallace last week (Friday) and he said they would be meeting soon to discuss who they were selecting so I would also gamble on a week or two.
