2015-2016 University of Hawaii Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does anyone know the screening stats for a non-resident? I know of the points system but I just want to know generally what will get you a secondary as a non-resident.

A) Describe the important experience(s) in your life which you feel began the process that motivated you to enter the career of medicine
B) Please explain why you are applying to the University of Hawai‘i John A. Burns School of Medicine
C) If you are a re-applicant to JABSOM, please complete the following additional essay. Describe what efforts you have made to further improve your application to the MD Program.
Did you receive the secondary by mail or by email? I've heard most people get it by mail, but I thought I saw one or two OOS people mention they got it by email. I submitted my AMCAS app 6/8 and was approved 6/24 but I haven't gotten anything in the mail yet.

Do you mind sharing your stats?
My stats aren't that great so I wouldn't worry too much if you haven't gotten one yet!
IS, GPA 3.32, MCAT 35, lots of ECs

Got my secondary yesterday. (I'm out of state but graduated from a University in Hawai'i). So if I got a secondary application does that mean I earned enough of those "points" they award their applicants to be considered for admission? I love Hawai'i and would like to practice here as a physician, but wasn't sure it'd be worth applying as I've heard it's almost impossible for out of state applicants to be accepted at JABSOM unless their family lives there and they are native Hawai'ian or something to that effect. Anyways, I will the unrelated comment that Hawai'i has the nicest drivers of any place anywhere. Seriously, you guys are so polite when driving it's funny. Keep it up.

Submitted my secondary 7/21! I really hope I hear back about an interview before I go back to college in August. It'd be really nice to not have to pay to fly back during the school year.

Did they send you an email confirming they received your secondary? I'm worried because I didn't get a confirmation email but I also don't want to call or email them to check that they received it and seem too neurotic.

Do you have really strong EC's? When were you verified for your primary?
I feel that my EC's are pretty strong (but not the best). (Research, clinical volunteering, shadowing, work experience, etc). Primary verified 6/2, submitted processing fee 7/1.

Gotcha. Thanks for all the info! I appreciate it

By e-mail. I returned it via e-mail too (this was the method they requested). When I looked at last year's thread, it seemed like most applicants got it via e-mail... at least from what I recall.

I actually submitted my AMCAS and was verified the exact same days as you. Soon after verification, I got the processing fee request, paid that, and then received the secondary 2-3 days ago.

So do we get 2 pages for the first prompt, and 1 page for the second? At least that's how it was in my secondary. What font size did you use? And can we add additional pages if needed?

I only had one page for my first prompt 🙂

Weird! I guess I'll have to call them and find out. Thanks for letting me know 🙂
My application provided two pages for the first prompt but the second page seemed to be a copy of the first. Whenever I typed/pasted anything into the first page it automatically copied all of it into the second page so I couldn't use the second page to write a longer essay.

One more question, can we submit on the day its due? Mine's due 8/4, but the application packet says "by 8/4"

I would assume it means by the end of business on 8/4 but if you're worried you could submit it tonight.

Just received the interview packet via email! I am beyond excited and blessed for the opportunity to interview at such a beautiful and amazing institution!

Congrats everyone!
when did you two submit your secondary application?

Any OOS?

still yet to receive secondary. In state resident
Paid for secondary on 7/28. Reapplicant. 3rd time applying to JABSOM. Rejected first year (went through interview process), then raised MCAT. Waitlisted last year.
29 MCAT (retake; raised exam from 25 MCAT)
3.79CGPA
3.75BCPM
3.86 AO GPA

II, OOS. Surprised that I got one so fast. I've been living in Hawaii though which is maybe why? Whatever the reason, I am very happy. Thanks JABSOM!

II, IS

From what I have heard they accept the top 10 or 20 applicants around Christmas time and then the rest of the notifications come in March so it does help a little to interview earlier.

Are any of you attending the PBL curriculum orientation and do you know what the attire is?

I have not received a secondary or any emails from the school yet. I noticed somebody said they paid for the secondary. Is there a place we have to pay before receiving a secondary?

After AMCAS verification, they should send you an email where they basically bill you for $150 for consideration and processing. Note that this fee is for them to look at your app not a guarantee that they will send a secondary.

Anybody applying to the Imi Ho'ola program as well?

I have read that the adcoms for the Imi program and JABSOM are separate and different; does this mean that we can reuse our personal statement (PS) for some of the Imi questions?

For instance, the first Imi essay question is: "Describe why you want to pursue a career in medicine. What key experiences have influenced this decision?" I mean, that's pretty much the standard PS question, right?

There's also the fact that one of JABSOM's secondary essays is: "A) Describe the important experience(s) in your life which you feel began the process that motivated you to enter the career of medicine."

I'm assuming they don't expect us to create 3 different narratives of the same thing, but just asking here in case someone knows for sure.

Those of you that had interviews, how long were they? Not sure how much time I need to give myself between interview appointments.

Any OOS interviewing on Nov 10 and want to share a room?

Where are you staying?

Also, how long did you wait between paying the $150 and receiving the secondary?

I'm staying at the hotel right by the airport! Think it was called Pacific Marina Inn or something. Was the cheapest option that got decent reviews and they have a free shuttle to and from the airport. As a sidenote, if you book through Expedia, Expedia's bundle actually gave me a cheaper price per night than if I booked through the hotel's website using JABSOM's corporate rate.

There were about 2 weeks between when I paid the processing fee and when I received a secondary. The secondary was actually attached to an email that they said they received my processing fee, so read every email really thoroughly. I didn't even realize I had a secondary until my deadline was past but luckily they extended it for me.

Completely unrelated, but does anyone have any experience with the bus on Oahu? Does it run smoothly? Reliably?

I used the bus last year to get to JABSOM for my interview at 9 am and the bus was on time, but all of my friends from that area told me that the buses are always late so I made sure to catch an early bus.
