2015-2016 University of Hawaii Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Yesterday, 04/04 was the deadline to accept/withdraw, so there should be some news soon!

Good luck to everyone!
Hoping so! I am getting worried that not hearing back soon is going to be bad news 🙁

Ya I feel like if we don't hear back by the end of this week our chances are slim to none :\

sooooo, speaking of waitlist movement. my friend just got accepted on Monday morning.
Damn the bulk of the waitlist movement has probably already occurred then 🙁... I guess it's time I accept my fate and start gearing up for next cycle

Accepted today off the IS waitlist! :soexcited:

If anyone is willing to add me to the Class of 2020 Facebook page let me know!

How do you get added to the Facebook page?

According to an MS4 I spoke to, the incoming MS2 class elects their class officers at the end of April. The newly elected officers are in charge of creating the class of 2020 page and will then invite all of the accepted students near the end of April.

Are the IS and OOS waitlists separate? Or are they combined?

Wondering if Hawaii still adheres to the April 30th deadline and if we will see any waitlist movement since they require applicants to accept within two weeks? Or how does that work?

Not too sure about that, but the intent to register forms are due next week Friday, May 6th. So there might be some movement before/after then.

Ah, you answered perfectly, thank you! 🙂

I got in OOS last week! I am still on the wait list for my top school. So there's a chance I will withdraw from JABSOM.

Class of 2020 Facebook page has been put up by the MS2s! If you request to join, they should be able to approve it. 🙂

I just withdrew an OOS spot. I got into my #1 choice. Good luck to you all!!!!
Thank you for the update and congratulations!! I am very happy you got into your top choice- that's amazing! 🙂

On another note, I know they don't say, but I was wondering around how many students they have on their OOS wait list. They say in MSAR that they interview around 70-80. Since the class size is 10, I'm wondering if around half are put on the waitlist or what?

Did anyone else still on the waitlist receive an email asking if we want to remain on the waitlist?

Hi guys,

Congratz for those who got in.

I am applying this round and I was wondering if you could share more about the secondary application.
Is it online or on paper? Do you specify which letters they should read, or will all designated letters from AMCAS be sent?

Thanks much!

Hi miakip!

Secondary applications were emailed to those passing the initial 2 screens (ties to hawaii + numbers). There's no online portal or anything, so you'd have to mail them back to JABSOM through good ol' snail mail (EDIT: per 20Hopeful16 below, emailing it back to them is also acceptable). They pretty much use the same 2 (3 if reapplicant) secondary essay questions:

A) Describe the important experience(s) in your life which you feel began the process that motivated you to enter the career of medicine
B) Please explain why you are applying to the University of Hawai‘i John A. Burns School of Medicine
C) If you are a re-applicant to JABSOM, please complete the following additional essay. Describe what efforts you have made to further improve your application to the MD Program.

As for the letters, you can specify on AMCAS which letters you want sent to JABSOM. They're pretty lenient on the letter requirements; unlike other schools, you just need a minimum of 2 recommendation letters from professors (and no more than 5, IIRC). The type of profs. don't have a strict science requirement either.

Hope that helps, and good luck!

Just want to say that the secondary is emailed as a pdf, which can be edited and emailed back to them.

Good luck !! 😀:luck:

Thanks for the correction! I guess I just assumed we had to do it through snail mail because of the lack of an online portal! Will go ahead and correct my post!
