2015-2016 University of Texas - Austin (Dell) Application Thread

How are people ranking this school compared to other Texas schools?

It sounded like they were shooting for scores somewhere around Houston and San Antonio. But honeslty, with their faculty, location, and the amount of people wanting to attend, they could probably match Southwestern and Baylor.

Does anyone know how many secondaries they are planning on sending or why they decided to send some late ones?

I'm honestly not sure! Right now I'm ranking it above Texas A&M and Galveston but below UTH and UTSW, but I'm not sure if this is a good choice just because the school is brand new and all. I love the curriculum and the city, also the facilities are going to be new and I'll be close to home.

Im not sure about secondaries but I know they said they are sending out 350 II's.

For those that have interviewed or know a good amount about the school, how true is this rumor: Dell does not have an actual anatomy lab but a virtual one. I feel like that is a major drawback to an otherwise pretty good school.

I didn't hear anything about a virtual anatomy lab during my interview day. If anything they'll have both like UTHSCSA and Texas Tech. I can't see Dell taking away such a basic and vital part of medical education.

For those who have interviewed at Dell, do we seriously have to pay to park our cars? They don't provide validation at all?

How much is the parking lol
Oh I didn't mean because of the parking. Hotels are expensive in Austin, plus rental car, plus plane ride from Seattle, it just adds up. For just a 4 hour interview day it's annoying to be spending so much. Hopefully it will be worth it.

I'm staying at a hostel three blocks away, still gonna be super expensive because of the plane ticket on such short notice.

For those of you interviewing this Friday, 10/30: the invite confirmation e-mail said they'd send out a personal schedule, and tips for the interview 3-5 business days before the interview. Has anybody received this yet? I haven't and I'm debating whether I should e-mail them to ask or if they just haven't finished the schedules yet. 😕

Haven't got one here either, totally forgot to even expect it

Soo how are they compressing 2 years of preclinical education into 1 year?

They're actually not compressing it, they're changing the way it's taught. They won't teach as much material as schools with 2 years of pre clinical curriculum. With the case-based learning, they feel students will learn more efficiently, so 1 year will be sufficient.

And they said they wont teach things multiple times like it was done in a 2-yr model. They cut back on useless memorization most schools do apparently.

This school is going to change medicine! I interviewed today and whether I'm part of the school or not I'm excited to see how this school benefits healthcare for everybody in the country

I completed it the day after I received the invitation, 9/29. Got the received secondary email 10/1.
Alrighty. I was invited to complete Secondary mid Oct so hopefully I receive an II as well. I have similar stats as you. Have you received IIs anywhere else?

UTMB, UT-H, UTSA, TAMUCOM, and some out of states though I think you meant just in Texas. Did not fill out secondary for UT-SW, nor did I apply to Baylor through AMCAS.

Hi everyone,

I'm a Dell Medical School employee and we wanted to reply to some questions/comments regarding an anatomy lab.

At Dell Medical School, anatomical education will be a component of several foundational courses. The 12-week Structure & Function Course will include weekly laboratory sessions in which whole body and regional dissections will be performed and demonstrated. In this and other courses, Dell Medical School students will have ample opportunities to dissect and explore human cadavers as part of their study of clinical anatomy, physiology, radiology and pathology.

To complement cadaver-based dissection, students will have access to a Sectra Visualization Table which contains the Touch of Life VH Dissector platform, an anatomical reference tool based on the National Library of Medicine’s Visible Human Project. With this instrument, students can manipulate and study a large data set of anatomical 2D and 3D images via a 46-inch multi-touch display surface. This instrument will also allow students to interact with 3D computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) images of the human body. Users will be able to slice through or remove layers of body tissues and bones with the swipe of a finger. https://www.sectra.com/medical/sectra_table/solutions/education/#yt-mYtlLLidOGY

Thanks for your continued interest in Dell Med.

For anyone who has interviewed here: did they go into the construction details with y'all? Or at least the projected completion date? I just drove by on my way home and I'm really concerned that they won't be done on time.

Projected completion date is June 2016. So basically just in time. Which is slightly concerning because construction is rarely on schedule. They did not seem worried though, and worst case scenario it's Summer Semester for the UT so I'm sure there will be plenty of rooms we could use on campus for a few weeks.

Okay thank you. I agree that the completion date is a little worrisome. I can't help but wonder how anatomy lab would work if the facilities aren't complete on time. We can always commandeer UT Austin rooms if necessary, but I am not sure that the original campus has cadaver labs already on hand.

True. But if that's the only issue, the curriculum could maybe be slightly rearranged to accommodate that?
There was a crazy storm the day I was interviewing and they figured it out.
Resourcefulness is what Dell is all about anyway.

Absolutely loved the interview at Dell. Maybe I'm just an idealist, but I love what this school is aspiring to do. Really threw a wrench into my match rankings.

Interviewed on the first day, definitely one of my top choice schools.
In an email they said they would start sending out offers today. Anyone hear anything yet?

I, too, interviewed that day. My guess is they will start sending offers tomorrow during regular business hours since it is Sunday and all.

I was at the interview this past Saturday - they told us pre-match offers will come on a rolling basis, due to their late start, beginning Nov. 16th.

Does anyone know how many more interview days are left? I got my secondary a week before the 10/15 due date and I am hoping that I am not too late to get a II!

They have 2 dates in December and I believe a stand-by date in January. I too hope I receive an II from Dell. Got my secondary same time as you did.

Well fingers crossed for the both of us!
