2015-2016 University of Texas - Austin (Dell) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
^Can I ask for what day you're interviewing and whether they contacted you by phone or email? Thank you and congrats!

Does anyone know if Dell takes update letters or letters of interest? I would like to let them know how interested I am before the last day fills up!

No, they don't. I already tried :/

That is upsetting to hear. I was hoping that my final semester grades would help tip the decision in my favor, but they will come out after the last interview day =(. Does anyone know if the make up day is only for those that needed to reschedule the interview? Or might those of us who were given a secondary in late October still have a chance?

I sent an update letter and they responded with an email saying that they don't take any secondary information outside of TMDSAS

Aside from the 4-5 pre-matched students so far, have any others received acceptance?

Interviewed 11/14

Really hope that they do have another date in January. I want to interview here !!

When I spoke with the school they made it seem like the class is not full yet. Going into the holiday I can't imagine the rest of the seats will be filled, so they may very well use that extra interview day. I hope you get to interview as well, but it will really make your ranking difficult. Dell is going to be a top medical school in due time, you can feel it when you listen to what they have going in and realize all the resources that are being put into this.

The argument was baseless anyway. The school isn't small. It's going to have over 200 students in each class in just four years. With over 1,000 medical students working on third year projects with the primary and only focus of improving healthcare, I'm sure there will be some great progress!! Woo!

Has anyone been in contact with this school recently? Wondering whether they have sent out any more II's and if they accept updates.

I know they don't accept updates, per other posters. Not 100% about invites.

I interviewed 11/14 as well and have not heard back yet. Anyone else on 11/14 that's heard?

I emailed the staff and my sense was that we should know before pre-match date whether we were accepted or not.

To all of you waiting on an interview, I received confirmation that there will be an interview day on January 9. Good luck! 🙂

I think I blew my chances when I tried for months to get a hold of them then just emailed the dean out of desperation for a response. But thankfully I pre matched to UTMB 🙂.

Would have been amazing to see this campus and all of what they are trying to do at this wonderful school!

You wouldn't have seen their campus at an interview it's not built yet

Had my interview on the 16th and really enjoyed the whole experience. I liked how they split everyone into groups and then you stayed with that group throughout the day. To anyone who has an interview coming up: don't stress out, Dell does a good job of making everything pretty relaxed and straightforward. Personally, I enjoyed the group interview the most followed by the MMIs and then the conventional interviews.

Unfortunately, we were informed that we would be evaluated by the committee too late for pre-match.

Also, one of the speakers made a comment about contacting Dell for information instead of "finding misinformation online *cough* studentdoctornet...." 🤣

I think she meant if she got accepted. I drove by the campus a few weeks ago and boy is it coming together quickly! It's going to be gorgeous!
Definitely what I meant... This would be my dream school with its mission and vision... Guess if I don't get an interview I can still be close enough if I do 2 years of clinical in Austin at UTMB

I was waiting for this response! But seeing as I am prematched at one and interviewing at the other, I will be sure to make you a personal comparative synopsis, including a typewritten version upon request.

You're right, a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. I just think you'll really dig what you learn.

Not going to Baylor then?

Ha no. I'm Baylor undergrad. I'm not quite so vain to make my username a prestigious prospective med school. Perhaps I should consider changing my username to avoid confusion, especially since I plan on attending Dell.

Spent they day in Austin yesterday and the school and new med center is going to be gorgeous! This school has tremendous support from the city and the entire state of Texas. It would be really nice to get an acceptance from here.

Haha maybe, however this time if I did get an acceptance from Dell I might actually end up going there....

Would anyone happen to know if they've filled their January 9 interview day yet? Thank you!

Purely speculation but I would guess they still have spots for the Jan. 9 interview day and will likely send out some invites early next week (especially if you live sort of close), just going off the past interview dates that have been discussed in this thread.

For those that were accepted, was a letter of acceptance sent in the mail? I've gotten the phone call and the pre-match offer on TMDSAS but no letter.

I got mine some time after getting the email.

I received my offer right before their offices closed for Thanksgiving, so I got mine about 1.5-2 weeks after the actual call.

Congrats, wish I knew what they are looking for 🙁
Those who met the mission, primarily, from what I've been told this was the chief concern. Looking at how the class is shaping up from the 'secret' FB page, wide MCAT/GPA ranges, wide age ranges, non-trads, etc... Only thing that is constant is everyone seems very enthusiastic about the mission.

Hey everyone. Anyone have any idea how many of the 45 in-state spots have been filled? An estimate will work. Trying to figure out if anything is going to happen during the Match. Thanks!

I'm not sure how many of the 45 IS spots have been filled, but regardless there will definitely be movement on match day because there are many people who may have pre-matched but ranked another school higher.

I thought that might be the case. There are a lot of competitive schools in TX 🙂. Anyone in the Dell FB group want to share how many people are in there?

Have any of you given any thought to the real possibility of study burnout with the new curriculum? I won't pretend to know how strenuous the curriculum at Dell will be, but it worries me to endure any med school curriculum without a summer break, let alone a condensed curriculum such as Dell's. I looked at Duke's website (1 year basic sciences) and they have strategically placed breaks throughout the first year and students said this made the curriculum bearable. Is anyone else concerned about this going into the match? (I don't post on here often so sorry if this has been discussed and I missed it)

I have this concern as well. I planned to ask about their plan for this extensively at second look in February. However, something the faculty hammered on throughout interview day was that they plan to be in good communication with their students. Since this is the first class and they are trying out some new ideas, they have stated that they will be very receptive to feedback. I for one will not hesitate to vocalize my concerns if I am beginning to become burned out.

In talking with students from UTSW, they stated that some changes were made to the curriculum to alleviate stress on the students based off of student feedback. I imagine that this will be the case for Dell as well. Something else to consider is that Dell is going to be very invested in the inaugural class. At least partially, their success and reputation is based on how well their first students handle med school and go on to residencies. I'm not saying it won't be bumpy while they figure everything out, but they will certainly make changes for the better to ensure that we are happy and successful.
