2015-2016 University of Toledo Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
A michigander maybe a transplant to Ohio. Only an hour away from Ann Arbor. Hope to be able to check it out, lots of folks from SE Michigan go to U of T for undergrad.

Secondary received. Same prompt as last year:

"The University of Toledo College of Medicine is committed to excellence in education which prepares graduates to deliver quality health care. Developing cultural competence is an important goal in our curriculum. Cultural competence is defined as an awareness, understanding and ability to use specific methods to deal effectively with cultural issues and its role in health and health care. Please discuss a life experience in which you feel you demonstrated cultural competence."

So this essay has no character or word limit?

This is a stupid question, but for address it says
Nation (non-US address only):

However, United States is an option? Should I leave it at none, or just selected United States.

Also had the same question on the world limit.

+1

I wanted my secondaries so badly this morning and now I want nothing more than for them to stop coming!

Us versus Secondaries

I e-mailed them and they told me the limit was 1000 words approximately. That's a lot more than the previous 2,000 character limit. Could someone double check with them?

I have seen some cases of them getting information wrong before, such as for Rosalind Franklin. On the forum, someone asked them how many letter of recommendations they take, and the person said no limit. However, the website clearly states "No more than 3."

The limit just seemed a little off to me, thats why I wanted to double check.

10000 characters puts you at about 1000 words. Twice the PS length...on one experience...

I'm sure most people's will be significantly less than 1K words. I'm thinking mine will be around 3-4 hundred unless a stricter limit comes out

I tried to enter an essay with more than 2000 characters to see what would happen, and I got an error saying "2000 character limit reached."

I knew 1000 words seemed off.

EDIT: accidentally said words instead of characters.

Do you mean 2000 characters?

There are only 2 essay questions on this secondary, correct?

Did anyone have an issue getting their image uploaded? Mine is 1.1MG and I can't get it any smaller l0l

Does the experience in the secondary prompt have to be healthcare related?

Also, is the LOR requirement a maximum of six letters, and you do not need a non-science LOR? The website still hasn't updated with 2015 dates, so I wanted to double check. Thanks!

Just found out that there's a 2000 character limit after spending a week on the essay.......:bang:

Just submitted this the secondary 🙂 I had 2000 characters exactly for the second essay, it was hard to keep it that short!

@yummygummie The prompt for that essay relates cultural competence back to it's impact on health, so while I do not think it has to be an experience in a traditional healthcare setting, you should to relate it back to medicine somehow.

My cultural competence is a lab experience, and my mutli-cultural heritage. I read the question to be cultural competence, not necessarily in healthcare, just that they state it is important for their med students to have cultural competency.

OOS (twenty minutes away on Michigan/Ohio border :yeahright:) secondary application submitted and complete today!

Anyone else having trouble writing the secondary? I'd like to think of myself as culturally aware from living abroad but actively "demonstrating cultural competence" is not the same.

If it helps, I wrote on an experience as a clinical researcher where I interacted with a patient who was a self-proclaimed uneducated person. Culture doesn't always have to be about heritage, it can involve social factors like socioeconomic status and education level as well.

^I agree with this 100%, I wrote with this theme as well.

I didn't have anything to write about either so I talked about how I was raised right and have never had problems with "cultural competency." Here I am, so I guessed it worked.

Woah, really? That makes me feel better. I'm an in-state applicant and Toledo is one of my top choices so the pressure is on. It's not that I don't have anything to write about per se, it's that I'm not sure it strongly demonstrates cultural competence. Do you mind telling me your stats when you applied?

Yes, just do it right. Stats: GPA about equal to/MCAT a little above historical UT averages.

Also, and this goes for everyone. Take the essay seriously. Toledo harps on cultural competency left and right and throughout your entire career here. It's pretty big for the administration.

Hello,
Could anyone tell me if skipping the extenuating circumstances essay is okay if I don't have any stand out issues in my application?

Is there a character limit on secondaries?

Hey all. M1 here. We haven't actually started classes yet, but I'm happy to answer any questions people have about the admission process or anything else!
