2015-2016 Virginia Commonwealth University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I am still on the "Your M.D. file is now complete. The Sub-Committee will now do a review of your application. Once this review is complete, you will receive a status update regarding your profile. " screen for over a month now. I'm starting to wonder if maybe OOS students are looked at later since VCU is a public institution....

I've been wondering the same thing since I'm in this boat as well. I called their office maybe a week ago to ask this, and they told me the answer to that is a categorical no. They said that due to the # of applications they get it can take 6-8 weeks for a status change after you've been marked complete.

Now I don't know how truthful she was being since it seems the evidence here points otherwise, but just sharing what they told me.

Anybody able to shed some light on this business:
"The School of Medicine has a geographically separate campus at the Inova Fairfax Hospital. Beginning in 2005, 24 students will do all of their third year clinical rotations at this busy Northern Virginia Hospital. In order to best judge the number of interested students we request that you indicate agreement next to the single best answer for you:
I am interested and willing to commit to my 3rd and 4th year only at Fairfax.
I am interested and willing to spend my 3rd and 4th year at either Fairfax or MCV Hospitals.
I am interested and willing to commit to my 3rd and 4th year only at MCV Hospitals."

It seems kind of odd to make someone commit to something like this on a supplementary application! What are the pros and cons of agreeing to get shipped to this Fairfax place?

Hey! I have family that lives near there so I've been to Fairfax quite a bit. Great place close to DC so there's plentyyyy to do around there. Only thing is Cost of Living might be a little more expensive relative to Richmond, but I'm not sure on details.

This is more of a survey than a commitment. Also, I heard that Inova is very nice.

Rejected last night. As a CERT student with a 3.481 in the program (just shy of the guaranteed interview) I figured this was my best bet 🙁. Good luck to you all!

Yeah, I assumed it was a survey just like the specialty interest question...until I read this nugget at the bottom of the options:

"If more than 24 students indicate choice #1, a lottery will be held to select only 24 students at the end of your 2nd year in medical school. If fewer than 24 students indicate choice #1 or #2, a lottery will be held among the other students at the end of your 2nd year in medical school to assign students to Fairfax. Once you check off your choice you are committed to that choice and will be assigned as space allows."

I'm not sure if the bolded also applies to the process that happens in second year, or if it's referring to the selection you make now...

WOW. Didn't see that coming. Lol. I think I put either or... Yikes.

I just got a status update email...Your profile is currently being reviewed by the Sub-Committee. This review will determine whether or not your profile will be forwarded for File Review. You may check your status online at any point during this process.

II after checking my portal! It's interesting how I never got any official email from VCU... I had to check the portal for the secondary and now for the II. I'm not complaining though :soexcited:

Which one is the second tier status? Thanks 🙂
It seems like there are 4 levels of status updates:

1. "The committees file review indicates that they are very interested in your candidacy. We are trying to get all candidates at your priority score interviews as soon as possible IF we have an adequate number of interview slots."

2. "The committee's file review indicates that they are interested in your candidacy. However, due to the increase in the applicant pool this year, it is clear we MAY be unable to interview all the candidates at your priority score. If we do find that we are unable to grant an interview, you will be notified by e-mail in March."

3. "The committee's file review indicates that they wish to consider your file over the next several weeks before making a decision about interview. Your file will be reviewed again by a small sub-committee before making a final decision. Once a decision has been made on your profile, you will receive an email regarding your recent status update."

4. "The committee's file review indicates that they would like to consider your file further. We are now in the process of scheduling interviews and will continue to do so through February. Unfortunately, the committee indicates interest in far more candidates than we are able to interview. Since we are dependent on the Committee member's schedules for interview spaces, we are unable to predict when or if we will be able to schedule you this year. If your status changes, you will receive an email regarding your recent status update."

I got the second tier status and got II as well.

I didn't have a chance to look through the entire thread but does VCU have available research options for students? All I can see by combing through their website is the "year away" program where you can take a year off between M2 and M3 or M3 and M4 but it seems HIGHLY competitive (~6 students). Was involved in a lot of research projects during undergrad and would like to continue throughout medical school!

Got the "4th tier" status tonight after a month on the file-is-complete one so maybe I'll be hanging out there for a minute or two 🤔

Hi,

I submitted my secondary a wk ago and everything else is in, but I am still at "incomplete" status. For those who "complete" the app, how long took them to process it?

Does anyone know how do we sign up for student-host program? I know they listed the names and contacts of the MSs who are willing to do that...so do we just text/call them directly?

@bmy, it took mine about a week and half. Their secondary states that it should take no more than two weeks for the application to be processed. You can email them afterward if you have not received a status update by then. Good luck =)

I've been on "complete" status for as long as I can remember. This was the first secondary I even submitted. The wait is starting to get to me!

I have no idea, sorry. I wouldn't have even submitted a secondary if I didn't see on SDN that some people weren't getting emails from them
Yeah, similar story with my secondary.
Basically, if you're not a neurotic SDNer, you would never know you were granted a secondary and would just assume you were rejected and forget about it.

So basically, being on SDN is a hidden prerequisite and it means we're all going to get in 😛 Yay injustice!

Has anyone else had problems formatting the essay? For some reason my spaces between paragraphs do not show up when I go to verify my application. I have tried copying and pasting from a .txt file as suggested, but without any luck.

So how does the secondary for this school work? I logged into their portal but when I go in there's nothing? Just says "Your application has been received by the VCU School of Medicine and now will begin the process of evaluation. There will be a preliminary review of your application prior to receipt of a supplemental application."

So this is the screening for the secondary? Will I be notified via email or do I have to check this site? It's been almost two weeks since I submitted my primary to the school.
You don't have the secondary yet. Welcome to the club! I check the portal everyday because they are inconsistent about emails apparently.

Got a status update email today...checked my status and it was unchanged. STOP TEASING MEEEE!!!!

Ok, my status went from 'sub-committee reviewing your profile' to 'you file is complete, sub-committe will now do a review of your profile'.

Did I go back a step??

Now that you type them both out, that's what happened to mine. I just thought it stayed the same because it was a status I had had before. At any rate, it wasn't a step FORWARD, which was really confusing!

Very, very high cost of living--among the top ten most expensive places to live in the country.

It happened to me before, now I am upgraded to Step#2, go through the thread to see what it means

Yeah, not worth 16 pages of complaints about the essay change and online system.
Fortunately, there's a search button!
Unfortunately, you've never posted in this thread before except to ask about FAP.
