2016-2017 Albert Einstein College of Medicine Application Thread

Should I use the further info part to explain my 3-4 C's I received in biology and chemistry pre reqs?
If there is no other section that prompts you to do so, then yes I would use the further information section and to explain those.

For the parents section, do they mean biological parents or current guardians? Also, my mother got her B.S. degree in a foreign country...and I am the first one in my family to go to an US college. Should I put that I am the first to go to college?
I do not know about the part for the parents, but for the section regarding college I would not put that you are the first to go to college if your mom completed her bachelors. If she did not complete her degree program then I would consider saying I'm the first to go to college.

Okay seriously...

Please explain your activities in detail, and your reasons for taking time off, and include dates. Limit: 100 Words

100 words to explain in detail and with reasons what I have been doing for the past 3 years!? Lol help.

The exact wording is on the online secondary is "How many hours during the school year did you work, on average?"

To anyone, is the photo upload mandatory? Does it specify if it is professional attire?
I got accepted this past cycle. I wore a dress shirt and took a picture standing in front of a wall in my apt.

Mine was in a T-shirt style passport photo in front of a white screen. If they don't consider me based on my picture, then they should re-evaluate their priorities

I haven't received a secondary from Einstein. Don't they give them to everyone?

About the question on W's:

I did dual enrollment as a high school student and pulled out of a one credit art class and got a W on my community college transcript.

Do I list this as a W during my "collegiate years" or no?

I'm not sweating it as it was a long time ago, etc, but I'm just not sure how to answer their question.

Hey everyone, sorry in advance if this is a dumb question, I think I am reading too much into it. For this question "I plan to take off this year, after just having graduated, while I apply to medical school. Y/N"

Would I say No if I am going to be working? I am just confused as to what would be a Yes answer, like traveling or doing nothing haha? and what does "take off" mean. I am assuming No answers is working or attending a post-bacc or something.
I am going to be working and graduated last year. Help please! and thanks you in advance!

I think that question is asking what you will be doing if you are not going to school full time, so I would write that you will be working at x job, and include any other activities (volunteering, etc) you will be doing this year.

For the question, "Is there anything at all that you would like to share with the Committee on Admissions that might not be apparent from your AMCAS application or from you Secondary Application? (200 words)", can I treat this as a "why they should pick me/diversity" type question?

"I have transferred from one college to another during my undergraduate years. (Please explain why you chose to transfer, and indicate the names of the colleges involved.)" I transferred from a CC to a four-year university to get a B.S. Is that good enough reason? Should I say why I went to a CC in a first place?

Thank you!

Is no one else confused by how small the suggested photo size is? 125 px by 160 px (pixels right???) is tiny..... and very blurry if enlarged so that they can see our faces
Photo size doesn't really matter. I just took a pic on my iPhone, cropped it to get rid of most of the background, and I got accepted last year.

It won't matter. If your a good applicant you'll get in.

Yes, this was what I assumed. Some people on here act like the picture matters more than the app itself. As long as it's not something inappropriate or vulgar than I doubt the picture is weighed in their app evaluation

If it appears on your set of college transcripts, then yeah I would consider it a W, and therefore I would also briefly explain why you withdrew.

  1. Do not complete this application unless you have received an email from the Admissions Office with a link to the "Instructions for New Applicants" webpage or your application will be withdrawn automatically and you will forfeit your application fee.
Is this the same thing as the e-mail I got saying:
EINSTEIN - APPLICATION ACKNOWLEDGMENT

I believe so. As long as the email has a link to this page, http://www.einstein.yu.edu/education/md-program/admissions/instruction-for-new-applicants/, then your good.

If we have already been out of school for a year, and will be out of school for this next academic year as well, should I just put all activities in the "have you taken time off after graduation" prompt or do you think I should put last years stuff in that one, and put what I plan to do this year in the "having just graduated, I plan to take off this next year before matriculating?" It's just weird since it says "having just graduated." It's also weird they use the phrase "take time off" like, when you graduate if you're working full time I'm not sure how that is considered "time off."

I think the "having just graduated" prompt only applies to people that graduated in 2016. You would only answer the question "have you taken time off after graduation." I've already taken 3 gap years and will be taking a gap year this year (obviously ), and I only answered the "have you taken time off after graduation" question. They must just like to differentiate between applicants taking 1yr and those taking 2+ years. Just my $0.02

How did you access the secondary application from this point? Did you have to register for a new account? Because I tried to do that and it said that my "User XXXXXXX has not been sent an invitation to apply by the Office of Admissions. Please wait until until you are invited." Not sure if this is a mistake though, because I received the same email..
You do have to register a new account. When I got it last year I had the same problem. For the first day or two I couldn't log on to the secondary. If the problem persists email admissions.

That is what I figured, I just thought I would double check with people on here.

So, what did you end up writing for that essay? I'm considering leaving it blank, but it feels weird and not right.

I left it blank last year and got accepted. Just make sure there isn't anything else you want to add to your application, and if not, leave it blank. It's probably better to leave that prompt blank than to try forcing an unnecessary response.

So you don't think a "why Einstein" is necessary then?

Flabbergasted that they want such a tiny picture, but then state that max upload size is 20mb? Just uploaded my normal sized image... I think they know not what they ask.

Does Einstein accept updates after the secondary is submitted but before interviews begin?

A "why Einstein" should be written in a Letter of Interest/Intent. Regardless, writing a compelling "why Einstein" in just 200 words will be difficult. I ended up writing two letters after submitting my secondary and my total word count was ~700 words between them.

So did most people just leave the "anything else you want to share" question blank? It feels weird to do that, but I also don't want to write something useless just for the sake of writing it.

I left it blank. Sent letters of interest/intent after being waitlisted.

Blurb from their LOR page:

"Applicants are encouraged to include with their AMCAS letter packet one or two additional letters of recommendation from individuals with whom they have worked closely. These can be from faculty, employers, research mentors or volunteer directors. Applicants applying to the MSTP must submit two letters of reference from past research mentors."

My school doesn't have a committee letter. As of now, I have two letter writers listed on my secondary: (1) faculty who taught me in my major department and (2) PI who belongs to department different from my major department.

So is the AMCAS letter packet in reference to schools with committee letters/packets? Or is it just the letters sent through AMCAS? I would like to submit two more letters if possible: (1) clinical volunteering supervisor and (2) another PI letter or another professor from my major department.

Anybody in a similar situation/called the office?

I think the letter packet refers to the committee packet if your school has one. I think you could be fine. According to their website, Einstein requires a minimum of 2 letters, one coming from someone in your major department. Not too sure about the limit maximum, but I would assume that like most schools, they probably don't want to be reading more than 4-5 letters from one applicant.

I will be sending individual letters of recommendations. Does anyone know what's the max?

So I just called their admissions office to follow up on this.

Einstein requires the 2 science faculty letters, but if you want to send extra letters, then you may send up to 2 more letters of recommendation of any kind through AMCAS.

Is anyone still waiting to receive the confirmation email? Secondary submitted 7/9. Adcoms don't start reviewing applications until they're marked as "complete," correct?
I'm still waiting... When I submitted the secondary all I got was an email confirming receipt from my credit card.

I submitted secondary 7/7 and got my AMCAS letters uploaded 7/18. But have not received any email updates 🙁

Be patient. It might take a few days for them to mark you complete after they receive your letters. They will send you a complete email once they update your file with the received letters.

Einstein may take a while to mark you complete. Forget days. It might be weeks or months. Take a look at last year's thread. Some people were waiting for a long time. I'm a reapplicant here and I submitted my secondary at the very beginning of September and they didn't mark it complete until the end of October. I didn't interview until the end of March. Applying to medical school is all about waiting and patience.

Guys, I know this is a dumb question but just wanted to confirm since I'm a bit paranoid... On the completed secondary, for entering class, it should say 2016-2017, right?

I think you would be 2017-2018 next year. This years entering class is 2016-2017. But if thats what it says on the secondary, I would just go with it. It's probably a typo
