2016-2017 Cooper Medical School of Rowan University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I was verified on 7/6. Got a secondary on 7/23. Submitted on 8/2. Have not heard anything yet regarding IIs.

I hope I'm not the only one.

From what I understand, Cooper only sends secondaries to certain applicants. I'm not sure what % that is of applicants overall, but I guess that means there are a few people who won't get them...

Was kind of surprised I got a secondary here. IS but GPA way under their average, I'm talking < 3.3 for both science and cum.

Are they somewhat selective of who they send them to?

Also for the why should we grant you an interview question- I was thinking about including 1-2 lines regarding my ****ty freshman year grades and how I've improved since...thoughts?

Not sure if I should only focus on positive aspects about my application or if I should mention how I've matured.

.

Would a car salesman spend any time highlighting the fact that it has less than ideal miles per gallon...or highlight the fact it has a V8 and fast as ****

Sell yourself.

Sell yourself.

Disagree with the analogy. Highlighting improvements to a car's design, performance, mileage, whatever from a previous year would appease any pre-conceived notions the buyer may have about said car.

So is what Cooper calls ALG (Active learning groups) just a different name for PBL (problem based learning)?

Yeah different schools tend to have different names for similar group learning methods. Usually are case based

Pretty selective or so they say. It's holistic as well as a numbers screen
Last time I applied my GPA was 3.1 and 28 MCAT, secondary and interview, granted I was in state. Have a completed masters and 514 this time around, was complete last week, no secondary yet . If it's numbers, then I don't think they're too strict

Yeah I think it's a really low numbers screen but the holistic piece is supposedly really selective. Who knows though? Definitely not on adcom myself lol

How was the interview last year? Surely, if you received secondaries and II last year then your stats were not an issue. Did you do the masters and retake your MCATs just for cooper?

I thought the interview was pretty standard. Interviewed with 2 people, one faculty member, one physician from Cooper. They have a standardized patient scenario for you to do also. I only got one interview. I have a 3.1 GPA and a 28 MCAT, and I'm a white male, so my stats are a problem. My MCAT expired also.

lol

This attitude is a problem, especially if you are trying to work in Camden.

Would medical ethics be considered a non-science course? I am stuck on that one

What was the subject heading for the email?

Cooper Medical School of Rowan University : CMSRU Secondary Application

no idea why gmail flagged this for spam, checked some other key words in the spam filter, e.g. med, secondary, medical, just in case.

Hello everyone, I am an EDP applicant, and they sent interview invite yesterday...just figured I would give a heads-up so that way there is a somewhat established timeline!

Geez, they are just getting to EDP now? This school has a later cycle than most others!

I did notice that when I went to schedule my interview that there was a date available late September...that should be for regular decision applicants, since ED applicants have the set date of 9/9

early july, I can't imagine they are that far behind

I was verified 2nd week of August and received one the next day.

Do you have ECs that fit their mission? My gpas are towards their 10th %ile but I have a few activities specifically working with underseved in Camden.

Similarly, I applied to Cooper and received a secondary the very next day (I'm OOS...but with several activities that fit their mission).

does this school screen for secondarys? so does this mean you have a great chance of receiving an interview?

Who knows. Maybe I'm talking out of my rear-end. But simply glancing at last year's thread, many people received secondaries who did not receive II's. I'm always hesitant in regard to anything involving "great chance" when dealing with the medical school application process.

For example, at VCU, ~1/3 of applicants receive a secondary...and everyday, there are numerous post-secondary rejections.

No such thing as "great", not even "good" (especially when there is $$$ to be made via secondaries).
I get what you're saying. It never means 100% ii, but I do think some schools screen more selectively than others and cooper has been reported to be one of those. They do seem awfully attached to their mission statement! More so than many others

I received a secondary less than 24 hours after I applied. So either they are really quick or it is very lenient. But in the end, it doesn't really matter, as people will still be invited and rejected. Best of luck!

I'm having a really hard time understanding what they mean by "ethical compromise." Would it be if a professor told you to lie? Or if your friend cheated and they expected you to lie? Am I on the right track? Can someone give me an example? 🙁
