2016-2017 Florida State University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
This is the only school that I haven't even received a secondary from yet.. Hoping to get mine soon.🙁

Just got deferred from ED to the regular pool, any suggestions on what I should do next? I'm not sure what I should be doing know in order to increase my chances as a regular applicant, and advice is appreciated!

Good to know I'm not alone here, still would appreciate any advice for what the next course of action should be!
I would say you should definitely apply to other schools ASAP as for improving your application, the best you could do is take on more service opportunities or shadowing positions and add these to your application

For those of us deferred, we didn't get outright rejected so we still have a chance. That's the silver lining in all of this!

For those who received IIs, do you mind sharing your stats? Wondering what they look for/if they've changed anything

What does everyone or anyone's status say on the secondary portal?? Under review status, my last in "secondary application received." Does it ever change to "Complete" or show receipt of letters or anything????

Yes mine said secondary app received on 9/10. Then on 9/14 "evaluations complete" then another one on 9/14 said "app under review" and I got an email when complete, too

How long is it taking everyone else to receive the secondary after being verified? I wonder if emailing them asking if I can have one is overstepping boundaries...

No problem! My stats are above the averages mentioned on the FSU COM website. I have the usual undergraduate research, clinical experience (500+ hours), a little bit of shadowing (multiple specialties including family practice), and some outreach (300+ hours). I am an IS traditional student and not a URM. I was not raised in a rural town and FSU is my alma mater.

Hmmmm....thanks for replying! But now I'm worried because my secondary app was received on 8/29.

I'll share mine, BUT, just so everybody knows my situation is a rather long/unique story so I wouldn't base anything off of 'just the numbers' for me. Also, I am a little older, 29, so I have a lot of work experience and etc. Don't let it freak you out. Just thought I'd preface my stats by reiterating what others have posted in here, which is essentially, "do you". You'll seriously drive yourself crazy comparing your application to others. (Trust me, I've done that haha) Everybody has their own unique path and journey, so don't get caught up in comparisons. I truly believe my story alone is a prime example of the holistic approach they really do take to their admissions/review process.

Non-trad, 3rd year applying, 2nd year as IS, 1st year as IS-ED. Graduated in 2010 with 3.1cGPA & Bachelor's in Gen. Studies, went back to school 3yrs later for med-school prereqs. New cGPA 3.33ish, sGPA 3.5ish, PostB GPA 3.9ish, MCAT PS9/VR6/BS9 (Took last test for old MCAT. Just FYI: Didn't get to finish VR), Caucasian Male, Small-Suburban, 1st-Gen College Graduate, No physicians in family or anything like that.

[Quick/Very Rough Summary of App: Moved from Louisiana to FL over a year ago to be closer to wife's family (wife from FL). Got EMT cert. beginning of this year, started working as EMT on a rescue for a county on the east coast of FL while in paramedic school. Completed paramedic school & license 9/15/16 (Took about 1yr, got PALS, ACLS, and PHTLS). 1500ish-clinical hrs for EMT/paramedic completed in Orlando/Central Florida area & county hospitals and FDs. 100ish-hrs shadowing family practice 50LA 50FL, great LOR from MD. 50-100hrs volunteering family practice office. Continual involvement in community & service projects. 5000+hrs volunteer/mission oriented work in underserved communities and those in need of help - through church & non-profits (heavily involved) over 10-15yrs, 4yrs student pastor, 2yrs human resources coordinator, musician/videographer - Lots of hobbies & extracurriculars. Not a URM. No research. (Besides 3x semesters of medical seminar lab). Involved in school orginazations, but nothing crazy. Genuine/Emphasized interest in Primary Care (Family Practice & Emergency Medicine), LOI late last year (not sure if they got it), toured the college of medicine late August 2016, + update letter / LOI week into Sept. 2016]

If you want/need more details than that PM. I'm going to post my full story on here once I actually get an acceptance into a medical school.

Secondary Requested: 07/14/16

II Request: 09/13/16
II Scheduled: 09/16/16

Also, for those of you who are curious, they told us they would meet on Tuesday (9/20) to make a decision and let us know. You either get accepted or deferred to the regular applicate pool. (If deferred, you could be selected at any point throughout the cycle. Pretty sure they said the last couple of classes had 1 or 2 get admitted a few days before school started.) The latest they said we'd find out is Friday (9/23) by 5:00pm Est., so yeah anytime this week I'll find out something! :biglove:Waiting is the absolute worst!!! haha

"...do you..." - very true..........wishing you the best

Idk if we should worry too much just yet ^. I know plenty of FSU students (not in Honors) who did ED last year and they pretty much all got accepted. I'm also ED and haven't heard back yet but still hoping for something since there should be about a month left for ED applicants..
Has anyone who's been complete since July/early August gotten an II yet?
What do you mean by "pretty much all got accepted"? Do you mean all the ED applicants who got interviews pretty much all got accepted?

Has anyone applied with minimal community service hours... I have around 50 hours. Also, what do you believe are my chances with 507 MCAT, 3.93 science GPA, 3.91 overall GPA, hundreds of hours shadowing, research, internship, FL resident submitting secondary today.

Pretty sure that admissions said that decisions for ED candidates would go out this week. I haven't heard anything from them, so I'm guessing it's not a good sign for me :/

I thought we'd hear something today? Maybe I misunderstood (75% sure that's what they said), regardless their website says they'll have decisions for ED applicants by 10/01/2016.

Limbo.
