2016-2017 George Washington University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Waitlisted 11/9 after interviewing 9/23. I'm bummed, but kind of what I expected. Best of luck to all of you applying!

Anyone that was accepted, did you send update letters through the portal after your II?

Does anyone have any insight into what type of decision-release schedule GW follows? Looking at this thread, some of the last people to have heard back post-interview received decisions on 10/17, 10/25, 10/27, and 11/9. Is it pretty random?

I also never received any emails inviting me to the webinar; has anyone else not heard anything about that post interview?

~This my first post in this thread, so here's my stuff: LizzyM~70, secondary complete 9/5, and I interviewed 10/14 (awesome school, amazing location!!)

Congrats to everyone who's received II's and acceptances!

I never sent an update letter, but I interviewed pretty early in the cycle so there wasn't a whole lot of time for updates. I did, however, send a thank you e-mail 🙂

How do I go about sending a new job for an update? Should I ask my boss for a reference or something?

Sent from my iPhone using SDN mobile
I had a couple of things to update (a promotion at a place I volunteer at and an award), I wrote two sentences for each thing...tried to keep it short since I know they go through a lot of paperwork. I didn't send any reference materials.

Awesome thanks! Congrats on the interview!!!

Also II earlier! Complete/on hold end of August, sent an update ~1 month ago, not sure if status switched back to 'under review.' Good luck everyone!

I did some digging in last year's thread and it looked like people who interviewed around late October and on had to wait about 12 weeks to hear back

I'm still waiting on a decision for an end of Sept. interview.. At about 7 weeks now, I guess technically they did say to allow 8-10 weeks 🙁 Love me, GW!!

Also, I did not receive any of the webinar emails post-interview.

Anyone know what dates were available for interviews?
They offered me 12/1 which I couldn't do, so I emailed them and they told me tuesdays/thursdays/fridays until december 16th, and then thursdays/fridays after January 6th until March are when they have their interviews. No specifics on what exactly is available but I hope this helps

Looking at last year's thread I feel like we are behind where they were last year. Either people haven't been posting the mass rejection G.W. typically always sends out early november or they are behind and it hasn't happened yet. Really hoping thats not the case though, Interviewed 10/18 and would be thrilled to hear back before January, though thats not looking particularly likely

Hi there everyone! Congrats to those with acceptances!

I got an II two days ago. Does anyone know the amount of time we are allowed before replying to their email? I'm waiting on a reply post-interview from one of my top state schools early next week and most likely wouldn't go to the interview if I get accepted at my state school given the cost of attending (flight, hotel, transportation, etc.).

Also, does anyone know the chance (approximately) of being accepted OOS with average LM? LM of 68, nontrad. Is this a powerhouse stats school or not really?

Thanks!

I don't think there's a hard rule here. Think about it from their POV: it should be fine if you need to sit on this over the weekend, but if you still haven't committed to them after a week I imagine they'll start to wonder how interested you really are. You can always accept the interview, wait until you hear back from the other school, then bail if it works out for you.

This isn't a public school, so chances are theoretically even for IS/ OOS (though someone who lives in the city and can articulate a connection to the city might be better off). Don't think they're really a powerhouse stats school.

Awesome, thanks for the advice!

My status just changed from on hold to "under review". Is there a consensus on whether this means an II is coming or is it just a general status?

Complete mid-July, on hold shortly after

I think the consensus is that's a good sign! Did you send an update?

I got the same thing and I got an interview the day after. Looking through last years and this years thread, it seems to hold true that that status means impending interview!

What it looks like to me is this is the usual for people on hold who get an invite (and this is just a thought):

Application complete status>Hold for re-review>under review = invite

Most rejections didn't get "under review" at all, and theres also people who didn't get a hold at all and went straight to interview.

My theory is that theres an initial committee that goes through all the apps, and when they find someone they like, they send it to a second committee that offers the invite. When you're "under review", you've been forwarded to the second committee, but if you're in hold, the first committee is still determining whether to forward you to the second committee. This might be why updates are so helpful--when the first committee sees a new update that tips the favor toward you being a good candidate, they may forward you to the second committee. The second committee confirms that you should receive an interview, hence the "under review" status.

This is all conjecture though...

Very interesting idea @Karmapaymentplan! I really hope it's true!
@NYdoctobe I did send an update around mid-October!

Hey everyone !! I just got an II yesterday too and its also my first. The only info I've been able to find about it is that the interview is closed file and done by a student and then an admin. Does this mean we wont be asked any file specific questions?? Also, does anyone have any tips or advice for interview day as far as preparing, where to stay, etc..?

Good luck to those waiting and congrats to everyone accepted/interviewing !!! I sent an update letter a few weeks ago which may have helped so give that a try if you're still on hold !!

That depends on your interviewer. Both my student and faculty interviewer asked me about certain experiences that exemplified a particular quality. Another question was basically asking me to delineate all of my clinical experiences. So as always, know your application. You should be prepared for that kind of thing.

Know the surrounding area and its medical needs. Focus on fit and how you will contribute to the student body.

Thanks for the reply !! Do you know roughly how many questions each interviewer asks?

That's a new one. Maybe 4-5 planned ones but it shouldn't matter. They can rattle off 10 if they'd like. I've only had one interviewer this cycle (not at GW) that wasn't conversational though so try not to fret about small things like that.

Lol thanks. Its my first II so I just want to know what I should expect.
