2016-2017 Georgetown University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
verified 7/22/16, secondary received 7/23/16 OOS

I think this has been brought up before with no real answer, but does anyone know what Georgetown's stance is on sending a letter of intent prior to an II? I've heard in the past they have basically require an LOI for admission (kind of an unspoken criteria of theirs), but I'm curious as to whether it would help earlier on?

Can somebody confirm this please? Should I send a LOI before receiving an II?

I honestly wouldn't. At this point your application to the school acts as intent enough. Only after you interview should you probably take additional steps to show you are serious about the school. At this point admissions has invested time in you and is more likely to be receptive to an LOI. They have a lot of applications to sift through right now and may get frustrated, turned off, or simply ignore LOIs from students they haven't even extended an interview to yet. Just my two cents! I know it's hard to be patient but keep confident and let your application speak for itself!

Thank you! It seemed weird to send one to them while my application may not have even been considered yet

Just receieved an II, is there anyone who is planning on canceling/rescheduling their late August/early September interview dates? None of the dates in September work for me

Congratulations!! When were you complete if you don't mind me asking?

Will it significantly hurt my acceptance chances to take the latest possible interview in October? I will be on vacation during the end of September and would really prefer not to change that.

honestly probably not, interviewing in october is still considered "early". Congrats on the interview!

I wasn't complete until 7/27 because my ugrad school takes insanely long to send committee letters. How long will it take me to hear anything back from GTown? This is one of my top programs and the fact I was complete so late is freaking me out.

Congrats to everyone getting IIs! I just got my secondary last week and am working on it now--super nervous/excited! Does anyone have opinions on whether to mention being from DC/having family in DC in the Why Georgetown? I'm really into the school for other reasons as well, but I'm worried that my combo of high stats/mediocre ECs might get me screened out...

I definitely would mention your personal connection to DC in the essay. They're probably more likely to look into you if they think you'll actually matriculate there.

The end of July isn't late. Some schools don't get their committee letters out until September. It seems like GT is up to early-mid July as of now.

How does Georgetown view people who are not Christian? I know this is a Jesuit school, so if you bring up your non-Chrisitian faith in an essay or interview, is that viewed negatively?

I sure hope not, as that would be considered institutional discrimination and is illegal.
But how do you reconcile that with what Loma Linda does? They seem to have a clear preference for SDA's. I think when its a private institution, they can (almost) whatever they want.......but I don't know exactly how georgetown views this.

Good point! Maybe try researching this on their website or connecting with current students? Regardless, I don't think you should be afraid to express who you are and where you came from because there is nothing you can do to change that! If it's a good fit they will accept you and if not, well you will probably end up somewhere that fits you better! Good luck!

I'm pretty sure the Jesuit affiliation at Gtown is more focused on the historical and philosophical aspects (i.e. Cura Personalis, service orientation, etc.) rather than being strictly religious. They definitely have a strong Catholic ministry/presence on campus, but I don't think they really care about your religious beliefs as much as your willingness to serve others. If your faith is part of that, I'd say go ahead and talk about it!

From what I gather, Loma Linda, OTOH, has a more explicitly religious orientation and really wants people who want to serve Christ, live according to SDA rules, etc.

GTown's diversity statement:

The University was founded on the principle that serious and sustained discourse among people of different faiths, cultures and beliefs promotes intellectual, ethical and spiritual understanding. Consistent with this principle, the School of Medicine strives to ensure that its students become respectful physicians who embrace all dimensions of diversity in a learning environment that understands and includes the varied health care needs and growing diversity of the populations we serve.

vs. Loma Linda mission statement:
Our overriding purpose is to foster the formation of Christian physicians, providing whole-person care to individuals, families, and communities.

Perhaps a current med student at gtown can comment?

So I recently completed the SMP there where we took med classes with the med students, had the same med school professors etc. I can tell you that Georgetown is very accepting of all faiths or lack there of. I mean in our sexual development and reproduction course, we had a few lectures on stem cell research, by one of the most renowned stem cell researchers in the country and the editor of the American Journal of Stem Cell. Like mentioned above, Georgetown is big on the fundamental values of the Jesuit tradition-- care of the whole person, or cura personalis. I have friends who are Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Atheist, etc and even within forums where we discuss healthcare topics, we are encouraged to discuss and voice our opinions no matter what they are (we had a discussion once on women's health and the medicalization of women's health).
Hope this helps!
Good points.

and one more thing to add...because of that fundamental value of cura personalis, you see amazing support from students and professors. There's this great community among students, whether your a SMP student or a med student we motivate each other to do well. Professors also really care about students and go out of their way to make sure that not only do we understand what they are teaching but that we understand the how gaining all this medical knowledge will affect our future patients. That's what I love about GTown. If you guys have any more questions please feel free to PM me!

So it seems like GTown (and a lot of other places) are about a month behind in terms of reviewing applications. So for example, someone who was complete in early July is first being looked at now. My late July completed application won't be looked at until late August......:scared:

I was complete 7/4 and my application says under review still. Is that normal? Or do they not like me

I also believe it is not 100% linear.

IMHO after going through this twice already and entering my third year applying I think it's best not to look at what your status is and then over think it. We really don't know what's going on in the office, and it won't do is any good mentally to think about it. Let it be a good surprise when you get that II! Everything's so up in the air =\ (also disclaimer I'm writing this to also cheer myself up because it doesn't get much easier guys so hang in there and enjoy what you're doing now!)

I hope this is your year!

In area emailed even though I knew they'd be like "... nah bro."

They nah bro'd be this morning. Ah well.

Edit: I did it for financial reasons. It'll be really hard to swing another trip to DC outside of my GW interview. Essentially the response is they can't expedite the process for my app which is completely fair. Also, even if they were/are interested, I was gunning for end of Sept and that's way too soon.

Anyone complete 7/12, or later, hear anything back from Gtown?

I've been complete since 7/4. Is it safe to say that I'm out of the running here?

I was complete 7/14 - I'm still "under review"

7/12 and still under review. Just trying to get an understanding of what dates they're working on. Maybe they havent gotten to our applications yet...

Not necessarily, It's not over till they say it's over!

Is Gtown a school that will send out rejections or they just leave you hanging?
