2016-2017 Ohio State University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I completely share your concern about this particular question. It is none of their business and I will not be sharing this information with them. I only listed Ohio State to let them know that I am a reapplicant to their school.

I will also not be sharing information regarding income or home value.

i personally was under the impression that these are things they CAN NOT ask you, under any circumstance....

We have the option not to answer these? 90% of secondaries are asking about my family income and race and I feel like a privileged little **** putting my above-median family income in there.

I personally disagree with the LCME's push for diversity through affirmative action URM admissions policies. It is no mistake that most schools ask "how would you contribute to our school's diversity?" and ask for the applicant's race and economic status. I believe that the medical school admissions process should be merit-based, and not based on race, gender, socioeconomic status, etc. Every matriculant seat given to someone with lower credentials [through affirmative action] is a slot taken away from someone that has worked harder and is more invested in the process.

Speaking as a white, upper/middle class female... You should be ashamed of yourself. If you'd like to bash affirmative action, please take it to a forum where blatant racism/class-ism is celebrated. Affirmative action is not meant to take away slots from people who worked hard, it is meant to give those who had to work hard in the face of more obstacles (poverty, institutionalized racism, etc) a fair chance. Not everyone is afforded the same opportunities you are. Privilege does not equal merit. Affirmative action recognizes that a child who grew up in poverty, poor nutrition and in below average school districts may not have the highest stats because they had more on their plate than school. Does that mean they didn't work as hard? Absolutely not. How you are even qualified to apply to medical school without reasoning skills strong enough to recognize the purpose of affirmative action is really beyond me, but best of luck!

I'm an upper middle class African-American woman and honestly your complete dismissal of AA is a bit surprising. I never wanted for anything growing up... sure we had difficult times but at the end of the day I was afforded way more than most.

However to insinuate that socioeconomic status (regardless of race) should not be considered is ridiculous. I have cousins that are impoverished and who didn't even know what the SAT was until 12th grade. Had they had the opportunities I had, I'm sure they would be able to do way more and possibly attend medical school but they feel stuck and helpless.

Maybe AA should be more focused on socioeconomic status and not so much on race but please don't just toss it aside like it serves no purpose. Representation is important and so is giving everyone an opportunity regardless of their upbringing.

There are so many individuals with high stats (which don't always indicate a harder worker). It's not like getting rid of AA would increase your shot much anyway. I guess it's easy to just blame external factors.

I agree, I found the secondary to be a bit too invasive in their questions. I don't think my parent's financial standing or home value should be a factor in my admission decision. If one faced socioeconomic adversity it would already be visible in the primary app, and I don't think they're preparing my financial aid package already.

My reasoning skills are outstanding. I'm very proud to support a merit-based admissions process in higher education. Privilege does not equal merit. Hard work equals merit. After living in a poor section of a major US city for years, and having friends from across the spectrum, I can say from experience that there are differences in effort. A significantly lower GPA/MCAT absolutely means that the individual did not work as hard. While affirmative action may not be meant to take away slots from people who worked harder, in reality that is what it does. There are very few matriculant seats for allopathic medical school in comparison to the number of applicants, and thus moving toward a merit-based admissions process, where effort is rewarded, would be a step in the right direction.

I couldn't agree more. I in no way support racism. I actually believe affirmative action and urm, etc. creates racism rather than lessens it. Medical school, law school, etc should be solely merit based. The people who work the hardest are the ones who deserve to make it in.

Thank you, Apollo8! Great post!

I'm still dying for the new season. I want to see how this re-election bizness goes down.

On a more related note, I've gotten like 12 emails today and not a single one is a secondary. It's torture.

I'm that weirdo that portions out my shows so I'm not even done with the most recent one. But I'll be sure to check back in when I am!

I've been dodging spoilers left and right.

Anybody else having trouble logging on to the secondary app? I've been able to get on it before but I can't right now and I'm just wondering if the site is down temporarily

I got a link to make an account, which I thought meant I got a secondary, but I was wrong 🙁

At least, I think so. Did everyone get separate emails for making an account and the actual secondary?

Soooo, what is the verdict about telling them which schools we applied to in the previous years? Is this optional? Like a few people said above, I'm not exactly comfortable telling them what schools I applied to. However, I have nothing to hide.....

EDIT: I just called and asked about that particular section. Their response was that it is optional. The question is suppose to let the adcom to know about us more. They can't see if we are a reapplicant or not. quoting the lady that I spoke to "It's to let the admission committee to know more about you and not suppose to work against you." soooooo yea....

How would we know whether they received our LORs and if our application is complete? Will they send us an email? Under the self-service app recommendations, are we suppose to add in our letter writers because currently, mine says no references found.

At the beginning of the cycle there was a separate website that allowed applicants to view the status of their documents and applications, however it seems to have been removed from the Admissions website. There is simply a tidbit saying that we'll be able to view our application status soon. They might be reworking the architecture of the database.

Did people get any kind of confirmation when you submitted the payment at the end? For me I just clicked a button after it said the payment was approved that brought me back to the secondary application.. I haven't received any email confirming its submitted or that the payment is submitted or anything..

Just a secondary confirmation a couple of days later. No receipt received after payment.

Any way to check the status of letters or anything? I submitted last night and was trying to see if they got all my letters (via AMCAS)...but I dont see an option to. Do we just assume we're fully submitted if we're AMCAS verified?

Alright so I'll assume it went through unless I don't get any confirmation after a few days. Thanks!

LOL

Just got an invitation to make an account at some vitals thing for the school. I hope that means they like me, but it's probably something they will send out to all applicants.

I'm sure that Vitals is just their new portal for applicants and everyone will be asked to make an account. Previously, when I tried to check my app status it said that they were developing a new system and that we'd have to wait until they launched it before we could check our status. But now that I've set up my Vitals account, I still don't have my status. It just says "No action need to be taken."

Am I the only one having log in issues? I made an OSU account with the lastname.# --> Activation code --> password procedure successfully, but every time I try to log in to the secondary website it says it doesn't recognize the username. :eyebrow:

They've switched to a system called Vitals, which has different login and password info.

Is anyone's vital homepage showing up blank? My "current action" box is empty and the only thing appearing on the page is a note telling me to submit my LORs through AMCAS.

Anybody with FAP, know how that is applied? Do I have to check "Economically Disadvantaged Fee Waiver" box in addition to "AAMC FAP" box? Do they want to look at my documents again? Would FAP confirmation email be enough?

It was either already applied or I had to email them.

Does anyone know where to check to see if our application is complete? I can't seem to find it on the vitals webpage

I got an email saying my app was received, so I imagine it should be an email for that too?

Is the Vitals page working for anyone?

Yep. It took a day or two after I made my account, but now when I log in it has a message that reads, "Thank you for submitting The Ohio State University College of Medicine supplemental application. Your application is now complete.... etc, etc." And then there's all the usual contact info and such.

If the Vitals account says our application is complete would I be wrong to infer that means our LOR are all in? I wish there was a way to confirm that all the LOR have been successfully downloaded.

I don't think it would be wrong to assume that! It says on there that it is only considered complete with the three LOR's have been received.

Did anyone else not get teh Vitals thing? Should I call?

For what it's worth, I submitted my secondary for OSU on July 25 and got a notification that my Vitals account was created the next day.

I sent in my secondary application this Thursday evening and got the Vitals notification this morning (Saturday).
