2016-2017 Southern Illinois University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I got the email at 2:50pm on Thursday 1/26
Cool thanks! I interviewed first week of January, but didn't get an email this week. Hopefully I I'll during the next batch. That's the first week of March, right?

Good luck! It usually is, but could be the last week in February as well, depending on committee meeting timings.

Hello! I just received my AWPA letter in the mail today, is it too late to be accepted within the February batch? Thank you!

Thanks for the reply! They send out some acceptances before the next batch in March, correct?
Yes, but only a few and only if some who got accepted decline their seats. The next batch will be late Feb / early March and then movement ramps up until / around the multi-accept deadline.

The big "February" batch of acceptances has already been sent out

edit: sorry I misread your reply!

Congrats to everyone accepted so far; as @ncklkrt said plenty more to come. Keep checking those emails and take care of yourselves
Do you know if the next batch will be late February or early march? I heard/read both timeframes and wanted some clarification.

At the interview and in the AWPA letter, they say March. But this year, the admissions committee has been meeting a week or so earlier and have been releasing acceptance in the last week of the month before. So could be either!

Is there an accepted students Facebook page?
There will be! They usually wait until after the last batch goes out and the administrators will create a page for everyone and give you the information via e-mail. That's the official page and everyone can see. Most classes, ours included, created a 'students only' version and invited everyone except the staff members to discuss other things 🙂

It will be "Class of 2021 SIU SOM" so you can search Facebook for that if you're super eager, but it will be created soon.

Thank you so much for being very resourceful!

I am assuming that the last batch went out yesterday, but since no one has said anything.... I guess not?

Do all the emails get sent out at the same time of day? That would make sense but I'm holding out hope.

Interesting that only one person on SDN got their acceptance today. Maybe the whole batch didn't go out today? Probably just wishful thinking.

The final full batch was released today. There will be some small movement between now and the multi-accept deadline.

Meaning there will be lots of movement around the multi-accept deadline?

Also does anybody know if we can inquire about what quartile we are at on the AWPA list?

AWPA rank is never disclosed. Yes, still lots of movement to come with the multi-accept deadline. Hang in there everyone!

Should everyone on the AWPA list have gotten that update letter? I did not get one but got my AWPA letter quite some time ago.

Yes, but I'd imagine if you're a little further away from Springfield that it will take longer. I'm from Southern Illinois and got mine on Monday.

Just wanting to drop a line and wish everyone who hasn't heard anything yet the best of luck! Waiting is the hardest part of this whole process, but for many of you it will be well worth the wait! Don't forget to keep enjoying your hobbies and spending time with your friends and family, traveling, or whatever you like to do for fun as you may be a medical student this fall! As always, feel free to PM myself or @Pasmal with any questions!

Could anyone comment on if incoming students should be concerned about the state budget issues and potential school funding?

Effects, if anything major, will most likely be felt at your first year on Carbondale's campus. The medical school gets funding from many more sources, and almost all instructors after year 1 are practicing nurses / physicians that also help teach. Our dean and student affairs office is extremely open and the biggest thing we've heard about is changing the colors to purple. As of now, there's nothing even remotely hinted at that may interfere with your education. We surpass LCME accreditation every time they visit the school, which also helps secure more funding. We are also a smaller school, so any sort of issues that may arise in the future would be felt less as less support staff is necessary for a smaller school.

At any school in Illinois you will be indirectly dealing with the budget crisis, and it's just something to deal with in this lovely state. Our opportunities have actually INCREASED thanks to the brand-new MCLI building and a restructuring of Y3 curriculum. As long as you'd be okay wearing a purple SIU logo on your white coat instead of a green one, SIU doesn't have too many other problems.

Is the changing to purple somehow related to the budget crisis, or do you mention it as an example of the few issues SIU has?

As an example of the few issues we have - if anything we have the resources available to begin re branding by changing the logo and the school colors.

Be aware of the situation and follow the news so you can speak out and voice your concerns, but I wouldn't worry about it too much other than that. From the student perspective, the budget issues have not impacted our quality of education here.

SIU did end up receiving funds in two stopgap payments for FY16; this reassures me somewhat that legislators understand the consequences we/they would face if higher ed were to hang in the balance for too long.
