2016-2017 Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Application Thread

How common is it for applicants to get 2 II's and then don't receive a prematch or even match during the cycle?

Hey everyone, I moved my interview from 11/4 to 11/18 as I am OOS and the flights were costing me 1k+ so for those of you who want to move your interview sooner, 11/4 is open!

Accepted to the MD/MBA program!!

Hi, I am interviewing for the MD/MBA program on November 18. Any information about your interviews or how your MBA interview differed from your MD interviews would be appreciated. Also, how did you prepare for the MBA interview? Thanks in advance.

My MBA interview was extremely relaxed. We spent about 20 minutes just getting to know each other. Then he spent like 10 minutes telling me about the program. The only "Interview" question he asked was "Why are you interested in this program?". I think showing a good reason for your interest is very important here. Other than that, be yourself and don't stress. The MBA portion has nothing to do with the MD portion, so it can't affect you negatively or positively as far as getting into the med school

Relax and enjoy the interview day. Interviews are very chill and the staff and students here are extremely friendly and welcoming. Just know your basic interview questions, Why TT, future goals etc.

I've heard this school only pre-matches on November 15th and is pretty quiet throughout the rest of the pre match period. Does anyone know if this is true?

Can current medical students comment on their choice of housing? During my interview yesterday I had several people mention the Edge and Renaissance, but I know there was another that students recommended.

Obviously I'm not a current med student, but I've lived here for 3 1/2 years and know the housing situation very well.
Both of those housing complexes are decent, but the reinassance is not super close and the edge is slightly pricey for one bedrooms w/o furniture. There is student housing for graduate students (law, med, and just regular grad) on the TTU main campus (3 min drive to the HSC). There are one and two bedrooms and you have to be 21 to live there. Super quiet, built two years ago so pretty new.
Other complexes I would recommend would be the avenue, 25 twenty, the grove or any of the complexes that are across the street from the main campus (on university drive). Those are all "student housing" (tons of undergrads live there) though, so if you don't get a one bedroom, you risk being paired with an undergrad. But you have the ability for that anywhere really.

Ashton Pointe is also a popular choice.

Housing database document from 2-3 years ago.
Where do you live document from last year, I believe.

When apt hunting, ask if the apt is furnished, comes with washer/dryer inside unit, parking (open, covered, garage, extra fee, etc.) and the available lease start and end dates, and if you can renew the lease to live there continuously, before applying.

You guys should also get these information on the facebook class page, which I don't know if it's created yet or not.

This held true for me. Pre-matches started rolling in for Texas schools at midnight.

So, if we are to be selected to receive a pre-match, we should receive it the 15th? I am interviewing 11/10, do you think that could affect?
Thank you

Well, you can get pre matches until like Dec. 31st. If the admission committee reviews your app b4 the deadline, then I don't see why you could not get one if they really liked you.

You should carry on with interviews at places you are interested in as scheduled- not only does the pre-match period span 6 weeks, but you might end up liking and even matching in February, to a school that did not offer you a pre-match spot.

With this school in particular, though, they seem to only send out pre-matches on November 15th.

Oh okay did not know that. If that's the case then you better hope they review your app b4 Nov. 15th

I am sorry, I got confused with the threads. I had my II here on October 28th, and this next week it's my PLFSOM and that's why I was freaking out. Sorry, but still I'm hoping my application is reviewed by then.

Also, I called the admissions office and someone told me the selection commitee is meeting the 10th or 11th, just few days prior to the 15th.

Thanks

Interviewed here the 28th of October, really really really hoping Nov 15th is a good day 👍

Is anyone else missing Texas Tech on their match preference list on TMDSAS application page? I interviewed on Friday, so maybe they have not processed it yet. Just curious!

+1, when are you interviewing? I also finally found something to be happy about today.
haha yes I was opening my e-mail and told my husband "you know what would cheer me up..." and BAM! lol I picked Dec 14, you? So if I prematch at my first school of choice, should I cancel the interview?

I personally would. Save money and could give someone else that interview spot. Just try to give them a fair notice!

I did the one on Friday. I believe it's the 9th?

II! Completed mid August. OOS, was born here, but moved out as a kid.

Instead of the hefty $550 airplane ticket and Uber costs, I'm driving a nice 15 hours. oof. If anyone needs a ride around the 7th let me know.
Also, are people going to that pizza thing? I'm going to.

That all depends on if you are in the first prematch batch. If you interviewed on 11/10, it may have an affect on when you get in unless you were a rockstar at your interview, but that's just because they already had seats filled before you went in. If they like you, and you interviewed later, you could still receive a prematch before the ranked match. Even then there is a lot waitlist movement until damn near the end of summer.

I don't think I'm getting a II here :/ Which is sad, bc idk what they don't like about my app lol

I talked to admissions a few days ago. This year in particular, they are interview heavy towards the end of the cycle. So they are still sending out interviews and you could get one in the next few weeks.

Thanks for sharing! I did send my secondary in August, so it was later on, so we'll see. 🙂

Hi, when did the interview day end? Could I make a flight at 4:20pm? Thanks in advance.
It ended around 3, and I know people that caught the 4:20 flight back! I made the mistake of choosing the 9 pm flight to be safe and then reeaaallly wished I had chosen the earlier one haha xD

Yeah, I had to upgrade from the 6pm flight to the 4:20 one that day so I wouldn't be hanging around for 2 hrs.

Did you take the shuttle to the airport. The school said it didn't leave until 3:45, which would be to late to catch a 4:20pm flight. Is it better to just über or something like that?

I took the shuttle. It left right after we were done. tell them in the morning and they'll help you work it out.

4:20pm would be pushing it. If you are taking the shuttle to the airport, they wait for the person with the last interview to finish who is requesting to take the shuttle. My interview day, the last person had their interview go a bit over an hour, so you never know. You can always call and ask them to not schedule you for the last interview slot, then take an Uber. They're really helpful and understanding with all of this.

What pizza thing? I'm interviewing here this coming week but haven't received any notification about that...

"Please also note that there will be an informal gathering of medical students at Capital Pizza around 7:00 pm the night before your interview"

It's in lubbock. I guess not every interview day offers it?

Best pizza ever. Promise. You should definitely go!

For current students, people who have interviewed, or anyone really who has some experience with both TTUHSC and Foster SOM, what made you pick TTUHSC over Foster? Trying to decide how to rank the two.

Do you think anyone OOS will be accepted tomorrow? I interviewed on their first interview day back on August 5th and have yet to hear anything. Silent rejection or is there still a chance? I know they do not accept many OOS, but I really liked this school.

Location. I did not want to live in El Paso.
