2016-2017 Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I would hope medical schools would value meaningful clinical experiences over sports. If not, they need to take a look at their priorities. But that's off topic.

Well that's not what she meant. She said that people have a meaningful clinical experience IN ADDITION to being a pro athlete or something along those lines. You do really have great ECs, but it WILL be an uphill battle.

That being said, I have a better MCAT and a higher GPA. I have 1 in-state interview. My ECs are stellar (in my opinion), but they aren't something that sets me completely aside. It's a tough process and you should understand it will be tough. That being said, I am not saying you don't have a chance. You'll never know til you apply. It is just key to apply with awareness. Good luck!!!

I don't think it is the fact that someone plays a sport that would interest a medical school, but the fact that someone can play a D1 sport while maintaining grades and gaining meaningful clinical experiences that would be impressive. I'm sure someone who plays sports but doesn't have any clinical experience would not be considered.

Clinical experiences are necessary but most people have them. Like @Timmy248 said it's not the fact that someone is a pro-athlete that enamors them but rather what that means- you're probably very hardworking, committed, can manage time well, etc. So yes, when basically every applicant has clinical experiences (and ones that they can speak to as meaningful) then it makes sense that activities that require extraordinary levels of commitment and hard work such as being a professional athlete are valued more highly.

That makes a lot more sense than what I had interpreted it as. Thanks!

II on Friday! Thought it was a rejection when I saw the email... OOS no ties to West Texas. Although I do have a rural background.

Does anyone know what the timeline is for MD/MPH applicants (and other dual-degrees/FMAT applicants) who have interviewed already? I know October 15th is the earliest they can hear back, but does anyone know if there is any pattern found in previous years/from current students?

I'm wondering the same

I don't think the FMAT program falls under dual degree. But OOS applicants and dual degree program can start hearing October 15th. IS applicants who didn't apply to a dual degree can begin hearing November 15th.

Forgive me if there is already a post regarding this, but I'm interviewing here next week and I was wondering if someone could give a brief description of what their experience was like (or knowledge from others who interviewed in the past)?

I was there last week. Its very chill and relaxed. tour and presentation in the morning. lunch. and then two thirty minute interviews in the afternoon as well as a third if you applied to a dual degree program.

questions were not tough, but they'll most likely ask you a few ethical dilemna questions bc i got like 3.

it also gets pretty cold there in lubbock

Does anyone know how long it takes the committee to review your file and make a decision after your interview? I know A&M does it the friday of the week you interview.

I interviewed last week for the dual degree program and am really hoping to hear something since they are allowed to notify us by Oct. 15

I submitted my secondary around September 1st, anyone get an II that submitted around this time?

Ok, thank you.

Sometimes the date you submit is important, but schools are so random sometimes, that someone who submitted in May can get a II in December, while another person can get a II the month they submit a secondary 🙂 Date of submission doesn't determine it all the time.

Here is what TTU says about the deadlines.
https://www.ttuhsc.edu/som/admissions/secondaryapp/default.aspx
Have you submitted a secondary application to this school? If not, go ahead and look into submitting it and then you will have access to their portal. Your application won't be complete until you have the primary, secondary, MCAT, and all letters turned in. There may be place on their portal for you to comment, as calmly as possible, that you have just discovered that your college just submitted their committee letter on 9/28 and so you would like to ask whether your application was considered complete by the TMDSAS deadline of 9/30.
Sorry, I wasn't completely clear

People who have interviewed here, do they have a meet and greet or anything of that sort the night before?

II! OOS, I think complete at the end of August! Super excited but the dates were so soon!

EDIT: TMDSAS transmitted 8/19, secondary completed 8/24. Hope that helps 🙂

Also, can anyone tell me how the interviews are formatted? Read through the entire thread but no one mentioned anything!

I had a friend say that the interviews are standard 2, ~30 minute interviews. That being said, depending on the interviewer's style, y'all's (lol definitive mark of IS Texas resident by using "y'all") chemistry, it could go over as in the case with my friend. She said her interview touched up on some "negative" aspects of the interview just to see her response. They also said they worked their way down from some parts of their application and naturally flowed off of some interesting ECs.

Would you mind sharing your stats and when you got your e-mail?

Thank you so much for the insight! Im OOS with family in TX. 3.4 uGPA, 3.7 SMP, 520 MCAT. Reapplicant also. But I would say that my ECs fit the mission of the school 🙂

How the heck are you a reapp with a 3.7 SMP and a 520?!

Maybe that is their retake haha?

Oh true true.

Haha thank you for saying that 🙂 I applied last year with my SMP GPA, but my MCAT was a 504. My biggest addition was my 520 MCAT in addition to working full time. Moral of the story - kill the MCAT if your GPA is mediocre like mine! And I think I spent more time writing my essays this year and was smarter with my school choices too!

II at 11:26 pm this evening! So incredibly excited. Application completed 9/9.

Congrats! I remember you posting your stats on here (and people told you not to apply), but you said you had ties/interest to west Texas! Really really happy that you get a chance to shine! Go kill it!

Thank you so much! That's so nice of you to say. I don't have strong ties to West Texas, but I have some plus I'm in my senior year at Tech. Maybe that helped? Not sure. Hoping it goes well!

Any idea what the general time frame is from when a secondary is submitted to when an interview invite goes out? I see some of the people posting about invites submitted late-ish in the cycle. Mine was complete 9/30 so just wondering.

Mine was about a month and a half. But I've talked to admissions, and they don't necessarily go in chronological order at TTUHSC Lubbock. They said there's really no process or first come first reviewed, which I find strange. There's got to be some secret they're not telling us 😉

Thanks for the info. Yeah, that's a little odd. I assumed if it's rolling admissions then it'd be first come first reviewed. Good luck with it all!
