2016-2017 University Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
@UNLV Medicine Are out of state adjacent applicants eligible to apply for the Early Decision Program?

There is no EDP this cycle. To my knowledge OOS applicants will be eligible starting next year, but I strongly doubt it will be a wise strategic move for them.

Secondary received and submitted! Can't wait to hear back from my Alma Mater!

Technically I'm OOS but I have no idea if they sent it so quickly because I graduated from there.

Did anyone OOS get the secondary yet? I got an email saying they received my primary and its under review, but I haven't gotten the secondary yet.

I got one at the same time as the primary received email and I'm from CA

@UNLV Medicine
Something I noticed on the secondary application is that it mentions that you must fulfill one of these requirements for consideration if you are not a Nevada resident:
  • You have graduated from a Nevada high school.
  • You have a primary family member currently residing in Nevada.
  • You are a member of the military, or a primary family member of an active duty military member, who claims Nevada as his/her primary state of residence.
  • You have previously resided in Nevada, after the age of 18, for a minimum period of 12 months and meet at least one of the previously listed requirements.
  • You were born in Nevada (verification will be required upon request).
Is this something that will be used for future entering classes and ended up on this form? Also is this something that is going to keep out of state applicants from being considered? Because I thought the website mentioned that all applicants from neighboring states will be considered for the inaugural class, whereas the application makes it seem like they will not be considered.

They fill out the top portion of your app though with the state since it's downloaded from AMCAS!!! I think this means OUT OF REGION similar to Washington 🙂 but you can apply if you fill these standards. They actually answered this question on this thread and other threads that you can apply if you're an adjacent state, from the state of Nevada, or fulfill those requirements...but those characteristics necessary for out of region applicants to successfully apply and be considered further are not necessarily evident when downloaded from AMCAS. That's why they have the separate area there 🙂

@cantelopeavocado has a nice explanation, permit me to compliment hers by breaking it down in a slightly different manner. For admissions purposes, applicants need to fall into one of three categories in order to receive a secondary:

IS - by standard definition
OOS - must be current resident of AZ, CA, ID, OR, or UT
OOS - must have connection to Nevada, which will be judged using the aforementioned criteria (graduated from Nevada high school, primary family member in Nevada, etc.)

The UNLV School of Medicine's core mission is to increase the physician workforce in Nevada, and we felt the best candidates to fulfill that mission will be either local, regional, or have some other ties to the area.

I hope this makes sense.

How do I communicate my ties to the area in terms of my application?

Any chance this school will change its name in the next 4 years? Las Vegas just doesn't sound as good as e.g. Albert Einstein or George Washington. 😉

Anybody finding the mission statement rather hard to talk about?

Our vision is to create a world-class center of excellence and innovation for medical education, patient care, and research that prepares Nevada’s physicians with the most advanced knowledge, treatments, and technologies while serving the health care needs of our diverse urban community.

So... academic excellence, research and diversity... I guess I'm going to focus on diversity since excellence and innovation is moreless highlighted through your primary..?

See post #37 in this thread. The school's mission is encompassed within the subsequent paragraph:

UNLV School of Medicine will be a full-scale, four-year allopathic medical school that is an integral part of a vibrant, research-intensive public university. The medical school aims to improve access to high-quality health care in Southern Nevada, increase the number of medical specialists, and generate high-level clinical and specialty care. It will expand the medical expertise in the community by increasing the number of physicians and trained specialists who are committed to serving the region. One of the primary goals of UNLV School of Medicine is to provide diverse and medically underserved populations access to timely high quality health care. The accompanying academic health center will serve as the core infrastructure for the entire medical community and generate top-quality research that spans the basic and clinical sciences.

Hello there,

First time posting on SDN although I've been watching this thread since I heard UNLV SOM recieved accreditation.
I think I'm still confused about who receives a secondary application. If a student is considered an in-state applicant and their GPA and MCAT scores are at or above the minimums, are they guaranteed a secondary?

If there is no other extenuating circumstance (i.e. felony conviction) then yes, in-state applicants who meet the GPA/MCAT thresholds and fulfill the course requirements will receive secondary applications.

With regard to timing, as @cantelopeavocado alludes to, we went live on AMCAS less than 36 hours ago, during the Saturday of a long weekend. Please bear with us.

Hello! I am from St. George, Utah and graduated from BYU, however I am applying as a Texas resident because I recently completed my PhD in Texas. I meet the criteria of a primary family member living in Nevada (Las Vegas), among other strong ties to the area. How do I communicate this in terms of my application?

What about OOS? will all the OOS who meet the minimum get a secondary? Will only the highest scorers/gpa be given it/interviewed?

I will have to get more precise answers for these tomorrow.

@UNLV Medicine For OOS do you have to be both from adjacent state AND have ties to Nevada, or just one? I am from adjacent state of California, but do not have Nevada Ties.

...I tried submitting my application, got this message on the payment screen even though it lists Visa, Mastercard, American Express or Discover as acceptable:

"MasterCard is temporarily not being accepted for this form, please choose a different payment method"

That's literally my only option to pay with. I'm not sure what to do. It's a valid card with no problems on the account. I tried it on something else to verify.

You could buy a VISA gift card and use that?

There have been no other complaints brought to our attention regarding MasterCard. With any luck it was merely a temporary glitch.

It has been brought to light that CollegeNET is asking FAP applicants to pay inappropriately. We are working to resolve this issue.

Public Service Announcement: Our application management software, CollegeNET, is set to distribute some secondaries automatically based on data pulled from AMCAS.

For OOS applicants, the admissions team is diligently conducting manual reviews to make sure everyone who qualifies for a secondary receives one. Anyone who feels that they are denied in spite of meeting the posted requirements and criteria will have the opportunity to appeal.

Unfortunately the issue is persisting and I have confirmed there isn't any issue with the card. I put a request into the portal's helpdesk. Hopefully they'll be able to resolve it.

@UNLV Medicine since there is no MSAR data available, do you have any idea how many people have applied (or you are expecting to), number of interviews the ADCOM is targeting , and percentage of IS vs OOS

Any reason someone in state with stats above the cutoffs wouldn't get one automatically?

Number of applications received: changing by the hour
Number of applications expected: impossible to predict, and should not affect any individual's decision whether or not to apply
Number of target interviews: 350 (subject to change)
Percentage IS vs. OOS: depends on the composition of the applicant pool

I just heard back from the help desk:

Dear Henchman21,

Thank you for contacting Help. We do apologize for the inconvenience. There is a step that needs to be completed with Mastercard, and the form will start accepting Mastercard just after midnight, on 11/1 (Pacific time).

Sincerely,

Customer Service

I'm not sure what the "step" is or if anyone else has had this problem, but it looks like it will be resolved soon.

they didnt accept my mastercard either so i borrowed a friend's discover card. not just you having this issue!

Any chance II will go out before 11/5 since the app opened earlier than expected?? Application submitted, stoked and crossing my finger for some good news! 🙂

Is it a sign of good luck that I submitted the secondary on Nevada Day? I hope so

Concerning the full-ride charter class scholarships, do you have to meet specific financial requirements for aid?

Not that this matters too much because UNLV seems like an amazing school, but it would just be icing on the cake! Loans are no fun

I am trying to submit my secondary, but I am in the Fee Assistance Program. What do I need to do?
