2016-2017 University of Arizona - Tucson Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Most people came in the stuff they'd been wearing. A few (mainly those from the first interview group) changed into more casual stuff.
Interviewing here on Saturday!! What is the attire for the Diversity Mixer? It looks like it starts right after the interviews are over, do we just go straight there after?

When did you interview and also get the hold?

10/1 and got the hold 10/17. Kind of weird since they said that we wouldn't hear back until late Oct/early Nov but someone in this thread said they were accepted after interviewing that date so I'm guessing the 10/1 group was reviewed.

Received a pre-II hold today... seems to be a popular place to be. Anyone get off of hold yet?

Yeah same here. Super confused about that. Guess we're rejected then.

They really emphasized (even the med students that brought it up) that each applicant post interview was re-reviewed each time. If I recall correctly, there were plenty of people that were accepted in last year's thread that were on hold post interview. I wouldn't get too discouraged unless you have an official rejection.

Any tips on U of A's MMI? I got an interview coming up and was wondering what type of questions would be asked? Thank you!

Honestly, the mmi reminded me of this:

There's a mix of acting, traditional, and cultural questions, with some unique ones I hadn't seen before thrown in. If you know the school, the questions were basically interpretations of their missions in my opinion.

So my stats are pretty low for an MD applicant. I read that Tucson is pretty holistic in their review process. I'm pretty non-traditional. I have a GED, single mom, autistic son... the list goes on... and on. I fell in love with this school because of how they spoke about being more than just stats, which are know are important as well.

Can anyone speak for their holistic review?

Well I have a low MCAT score for an MD, and got still accepted. Once they offer an interview, stats aren't as important. I think what got me an interview were my experiences, personal mission and story. What I like about the MMI format is that they get to know you as a person and your values. They seem to want to know if you will fit in with their mission, and not necessarily how you will perform academically. I think they are more holistic than other schools.

That's encouraging! Thank you!

Very holistic. I know several applicants currently in cycle with very high MCAT, excellent GPA, just your typical go-getter than never got an invite to Tucson, yet received invites or acceptances to top programs. Alternatively, I know two people specifically who have interviewed in this cycle with low incoming MCAT and/or GPA, but they had unique or interesting life experiences.

The environment here is just stellar because of the wide array of personal experience everyone has, and how genuine 95% of the folks are. 2020 is a large class, so I'm still getting to know people, but every time I talk to someone new I think, "Wow, they have a really cool life story". I haven't been bored by almost anyone I've met yet. And to be clear, it isn't that they're traveling the world or doing pretentious things. It's that they just have interesting life stories and have either had cool experiences that make them unique, or are just humble, intelligent, fun folks. I hope you receive an interview invite, I really do!

@groodles thank you so much for the reply!

I'm so glad you mentioned how the people are. I was just talking with friends about how important it is for me to end up at a medical school with people who come from different backgrounds and can relate to alternative paths. When you get a good group of genuine people together working on the same life goal it feels like family. That's so much more important to me than getting into a prestigious program. I really hope I end up somewhere where I fit. I'm a go getter by all means, I think most people who embark on this crazy journey to being a physician are, however I am not competitive by nature and would not do well in an environment where it was dog eat dog. Hehe.

Are you a current student there?

Thanks again for replying!

So sorry if this was asked before - can we send update letters? Does anyone know? Was put on hold and would like to update them with my current activities. Thank you!

What kind of questions were you asked?
Congrats btw!!!

Thank you!! I honestly loved this school.

There were ethical, expected and random ones. It's really what you'd expect from an MMI. However, I did feel like through each question, they were really trying to get to know you. It's easy on paper to write what you think the school is looking for, but being on the spot they're able to see if you truly are a good fit.
I was honest in each one of my answers. It's hard to prepare for an MMI. Good luck!

For OOS applicants, I think the admission committee is making the IS applicants a priority right now because my friend and I are IS and we got our II two days after our AMCAS Primary submission.

Anyone know when the next admission committee meeting is? I think I'll be in that one.

EDIT: contemplating submitting a letter of intent you guyz. I'm a risk taker.

Careful. Letter of intent is supposed to be pretty binding. Usually people wait towards the end of the cycle for one

They told us at the interview not to send these, I think, unless they were just talking about updates. But, I am pretty sure I remember them saying that letters of intent will have no bearing on acceptance, so don't send them.

I received an email saying they are unable to invite me to interview at this moment, but they have determined I am a competitive candidate. is this the pre-hold II email you guys are talking about?
