But they offer more than 91 IS and 31 OOS acceptances, right? (taking into account students who would decline and attend a different school?)
Here are the USNEWS (allegedly) numbers broken down by IS and OOS from reddit from a year ago too. (Applied/Interviewed/Accepted/Matriculated)

I think my heart skipped a few beats when I saw the email from UCSD pop up in my inbox earlier. Placed on hold, LizzyM 74, IS. Not thrilled, but could have been worse!

Put on hold today. I can officially say I'm the Queen of Holds...

II today! Lizzy~70, IS, secondary submitted mid-August. Kinda surprised since my stats aren't great but I do have a B.S., a B.A. and a M.S. from this school. Plus I've been an EMT for five years...maybe that helped. Earliest/only interview date was 1/24.

That time gap btw II date and actual interview day...

Also on hold....super bummed. Does anyone know if the rumor that UCSD doesn't prefer its grads is true? I'm also curious about the likelihood of getting an interview after a hold. Also, does anyone know if UCSD holds you does it mean your chances for "harder" UCs are shot?
I was an undergrad and grad student at UCSD and I got an II, I have heard that rumor before though.

For anyone that has interviewed, do you mind sharing if the MMI stations had traditional interview questions? Or mainly situational questions? Any healthcare policy q's?

Someone said they were asked about the Krebs cycle, so you should probably study the main products as well as each intermediate.

Why does the MSAR say there is only 15 waitlist movement spots then?? Wouldn't that mean 140 accepted 125 matriculated..?

Not necessarily as that would require you to assume that every who was accepted matriculated. Additionally, it is possible that those who were pulled off waitlist didn't go to UCSD.

Most likely, it means that of 200+ people they accepted, 15 came from the waitlist. The exact numbers from USnews for applicants, acceptants and matriculants was posted yesterday.

I am a little confused, do you mind clarifying? I imagined a school (let's say UCSD) sends out its 125 acceptances. After they send out enough acceptances to fill their class, they begin sending out waitlist acceptances. So the number of waitlist movement spots would reflect the number of people who were accepted to SD, but decided to matriculate elsewhere. Which would mean matriculated students + waitlist movement spots = total number of accepted students. Is this not how it works?

Did you hear about sword fight station? 2 interviewees enter, 1 leave. It really weeds out the competition imho.

That would be quite fun, maybe even old school light saber fights!!! If I hit your arm you can't use it anymore!

ETA: sorry read your comment wrong

Hello guys, I was wondering if anybody had a similar experience so I could get some confirmation about what's going on here. I checked my portal yesterday and I was able to schedule an interview by clicking on the "MMI Schedule" button that was not there before. I haven't received any email of any sort, so I don't know if this is confirmation that I've been offered an II or maybe just a rather unfortunate bug. I think the most direct thing to do here would be to call them, but I believe they're closed for the weekend.

For those who have received an II, in the "Invited for Interview:" row, does it say the date your interview is scheduled on or the day you were offered the interview? Mine now says the date I've scheduled the interview for. I was wondering if this is consistent with others who've received an II. I also still have the "Hold for Interview:" row but it still says --, so that's throwing me off a little bit, why still have that row if I've been invited already?

I'm withholding my excitement until I receive some sort of confirmation that this isn't a mistake.

Total number of acceptances offered = matriculants + those accepted but didn't matriculate

Say Ketchup SOM is trying to fill its inaugural class of 100 people. Of the 600 people they interview half of them are rejected. Of the remaining 300, 150 are offered acceptance with the rest being waitlisted. However during traffic day, 70 of the original 150 decide to go to other schools. The adcoms at Ketchup med then pull 20 people off the waitlist to fill the rest of their class. But 5 of the people they pulled off the waitlist get a better offer and choose not to attend. Hence another 5 people are pulled to replace them. So in this case Ketchup med would've offered a total of 175 acceptance = 150 + 20 + 5.

Though this example only works if the school pulls from waitlists. USC was rumored to not have pulled from waitlist for the past 3 cycles.

That isn't how it works.

Say a school has an expected class of 180. It may send out 450 acceptances to make sure it yields a full class. If after sending those 450 they end up with 160 committed students, it would pull from its Waitlist until it gets those other 20 students. That may mean they send 20 acceptances to waitlisted applicants or even more until they have a full class of 180.

The only school I know that does things differently than the above situation is Drew/UCLA. They outright accept like 24, and only pull from their Waitlist if their first 24 do not accept. So theoretically, if all 24 of their first acceptances decided to decline and go somewhere else. Their whole class, of 24, would come from their Waitlist.

I know for a fact SC pulled from its waitlist this past year. Also though, they accept 300 for its class of 180 according to Dr. Arias.

That's surprising. In that case, I think it was several years prior. Did they say how many they pulled last cycle?

Idk how many they pulled. Dr. Arias didn't mention the waitlist movement, I just know of someone who was pulled.

So schools give more acceptances than seats in their class to ensure they fill the seats. What if more people accept their offer than they have seats in their class?

On a UCSD note: Brian Zeglen talked to us last, and said that there were about 5-7 who got off the waitlist last year, but in the past it was around 15-20. He also made sure to point out that every year is different, so it's just information and not a predicting tool for this year.

Yep. Kind of like how airlines book more people than they have seats. Then they try to convince people to defer a year. In some cases they even offer money as incentive.

I'll say they're all questions you don't need prior information for, given you're not living under a rock. You'll do fine. There were two questions I had from another school almost word for word, so it's always a good idea to try to remember your previous answers if you can.

OMG really? Never heard of that. That would definitely convince me to defer. Do you know anyone who had that happen?

Yeah but it's important to note that they've been doing this for years and years. They know how many acceptances they need to give to fill their class. And then they usually go conservative just in case and pull from the waitlist. When they get overdrawn it's usually a big deal and everyone freaks out. Once it settles though it's a good thing. Like Duke was bragging about how they were overdrawn for they their class of 115 by having 117 students and pulling no one off the waitlist.

I dunno if that happened in UCSD last year, but there are some SDN peeps who were offered 100k or something like that to defer a year from either UMich or BU if I remember correctly.

Was put on hold here 2 days ago. I guess that's better than a rejection, right?

I refreshed my portal and email so many times after reading this. Still nothing here. I feel like I'm just waiting on the rejection queue.

me too!! haha when were you complete? I've been complete since mid-August with only "--" status...

Hello - I currently signed up for an interview slot on 12/8 - does anyone want to switch for one of the ones on 1/12? I have a family conflict. If you do want to switch - message me and we will find a time to claim the others' spot!

*Seinfeld voice* What is the DEAL with all these holds? I know its impossible to predict what is happening in a cycle, but placing so many apps on hold to me signals (to me at least) that they could be waiting till all secondaries are in, so they can give those top-top tier applicants the first shots at interviewing. As in to say the 8-10 weeks would indicate rolling, but not really. IDK

Does anyone know if they rejected people too... or is hold just a rejection postponement?

I have a sneaking suspicion that "hold" is equivalent to "I need a little space" which will soon be followed by the inevitable "let's see other people"...

Savage on UCSD's part.

But basically. Looks like they don't want to dump us until they already have the perfect new significant other.

No one's been rejected(?) so that means basically everyone gets put on hold if they get a secondary until later in the cycle.
