2016-2017 University of Illinois Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Speaking with other interviewees through the day, I do think the Chicago interviewers aim for a cordial interview environment. They're receptive and conversational, not stone-faced nor robotic. On a seriousness scale where 1 is a frat party, 3 is a presidential debate, 5 is a coffee date, and 10 is a police interrogation, I rate my interview a 6.

A coffee date is more serious than a presidential debate?

"A final decision was made on your application on 10-13-16. Please allow two-weeks to receive the correspondence in the mail. If you do not receive this correspondence in two-weeks, please contact the Admissions Office. No decision will be given over the telephone."

My heart is pounding!!!!!!!!!

So, as we approach the october 15/17th date, anybody want to dig through the old threads and post a translator from UIC-speak to English for the status changes?

Here you go! I had posted this previously in the thread, but I guess it's about that time again... 🙂 I added a note about "Applicant in Progress" (and how no one knows what it means) and also about CASPer.

For those that aren't familiar, here's the flowchart of portal statuses that gets posted every year. Not sure if this changes because of CASPer.

********************************
START

I. Submit Primary.

II. Wait for the email from UIC giving you your login information for the Applicant Status Check site (usually arrives within 2 weeks of submitting your primary): https://services.com.uic.edu/appstat

III. Login, and check your status in the second page.

---

NOTE: Because CASPer is new, we don't know how that fits in this flowchart.

A. "Application Not Complete" = Secondary not yet complete.

B. "Application in Progress" = You are complete. --> Goto C.

C. "Applicant in Process" = Your file is being reviewed, three possible status changes:
  1. "Select Interview Date" = You are good enough for an interview. --> Goto D.
  2. "Application in Process" = You are not good enough to grant an interview yet, but might be later on in the cycle. Check back periodically. --> Go back to B.
  3. "Final Decision Made ..." = You are not good enough. --> Goto X.
NOTE: There is also an "Applicant in Progress" status, but we haven't quite figured out where that falls in this flowchart. I think people have said they've seen "Applicant in Progress" before "Applicant in Process" but depending on how often people check their statuses, it might be easy to miss. If someone truly knows what it means, please repost this flowchart with the corrections.

D. "Select Interview Date" (a grid of dates shows up) = Call and schedule an interview date, after which "Interview Scheduled on ... " shows up. After the interview, Goto F.

F. "Decision Pending" = File pending review at the next adcom meeting (every 3rd Thursday of the month). There are 2 options from here, depending on the month:
  1. Before May. --> Goto M.
  2. On or After May. --> Goto N.
M. Before May, 2 Possible Status Changes:
  1. "Final Decision Made ... " --> Goto S.
  2. "Decision Pending" (no status change) + "We'll keep reviewing you" email (a few days later) = You are a good candidate, but not good enough to grant an acceptance yet. UIC will keep reviewing you at every adcom meeting. --> Go back to F.
N. On or After May, 2 Possible Status Changes:
  1. "Final Decision Made ... " You are (very likely) rejected. --> Goto X.
  2. "Applicant is Waitlisted" = Waitlisted. --> Goto Y.
S. There are 2 additional conditions from here:
  1. One of the yellow boxes says "Additional Correspondence" in the upper-right corner of your status page (to the right of the "Confirm Interview" boxes) AND you get a CBC Email (a few days later) = You are (very likely) accepted. --> Goto Z.
  2. There is no "Additional Correspondence" text in the yellow box and/or you don't get the CBC Email = Rejection. [Note: This is tricky. The CBC email usually comes a few days after (1-4 is the consensus) the status change. Be patient. Sometimes, the email never comes, which might be because you already had a CBC done due to an acceptance at another school. In some instances, the CBC Email even comes after the snail-mail. If after a week, neither the "Additional Correspondence" text nor the CBC email shows up, it's very likely a rejection. You've probably already received snail-mail by now alerting you to it.] --> Goto X.
X. "Final Decision Made ..." = Rejection ... Wait for a "Thin Letter" via snail-mail.

Y. "Applicant is Waitlisted" = Waitlisted. ... The CBC Email no longer acts as an indicator of an acceptance. If you get accepted off of the waitlist, then Goto Z, else Goto X.

Z. "Final Decision Made ..." + "Additional Correspondence" text + CBC Email = (very likely) Acceptance ... Wait for a "Fat Packet" via snail-mail. [Note: Sometimes CBC emails come after the packet. CBC emails also might never arrive if you got an acceptance to another school that also does CBC through AMCAS.]

*** NOTE: There are no guarantees in the above information, since there is always the chance that UIC changes things up. Just always keep in mind that the above is of what has happened, and not what will happen.

Congrats! Good luck! Did you look for the "Additional Correspondence" box? More details in the flowchart I posted above...

Would it look like this? Or does the additional correspondence box need to be checked or something? Ughhhhh nervous

That looks like good news to me! 🙂 Congrats!

Of course, nothing's really official until you get the letter, but from previous years, if you had the "Additional Correspondence" text then you were accepted. If that box was empty (no text), then you weren't accepted. I think you made it though. 🙂

For some context, I was accepted to UIC for Fall 2016 and that's the same box I had. (I deferred entrance to 2017, though, so I'll be starting next year.)

Awesome! Thank you. Hope to be your classmate!

Current M1 here. We are working on getting a student hosting program set up in Chicago. Should take a few weeks. I'll keep you all updated in case you are interested in staying with one of us instead of paying for AirBnB or hotels. Good luck everyone. You are all awesome.

Congrats to those with status changes!

Interviewed 9/12. Still Decision Pending... Anyone else?

Completed early July...still applicant in process. anyone else in the same boat?

BTW does anyone know if UIC accepts update letters?

I have been "In Progress" Since like August with CASP completed Aug 30th. Any idea if this is basically a rejection.

This is exactly how I'm feeling. I submitted everything late August and took the CASPER August 30th and haven't moved from "In Progress". Have you considered calling to check up? I'm on the fence on whether I want to call.

The adcom must have changed the times they meet. Everyone always said they meet on the 3rd Thursday every month.

I considered it, but I don't wanna be a bother. I think its best to just let sleeping dogs lie. Rather live in blissful ignorance than get a swift rejection lol

That's a really solid point. I am just freaking out because I'm from the Peoria area and would LOVE to end up back home. I guess we will keep waiting in silence. Best of luck to you!

When do you think people will be getting snail mail? It said on the portal that decisions were made 10/13.

how long does it take for this school to give you any response after you submit your secondary??

Interviewed 9/16 at Peoria Campus.
My portal still says 'Decision pending.'
Good luck everyone!

Does anyone know how many of the applicants end up getting a secondary? Are you very likely to get a II if you get a secondary or are the chances still pretty slim?

Sent from my iPhone using SDN mobile

Interviewed also in Peoria 9/16. Portal says decision was made on 10/13 and it had the additional correspondence box. I called the admission office today to check if they had my correct address, and found out they sent out the mail. (Did not get a chance to ask when they sent it) I guess that means the mail will come within the next three days, especially if you live in Chicago!

Did you receive the CBC email yet? I also interviewed at Peoria on 9/16, and got the additional correspondence box on 10/13, but have not gotten the CBC email. I am praying an acceptance comes in the mail soon for everyone getting the correspondence tab

What is the CBC email? I think snail mail comes first, unless you're really far away.

I think CBC is the criminal background email that somewhat indicates a person was accepted. Honestly, I don't know how accurate the information is, probably just speculation. I have heard of people that get the CBC after the admission packet arrives. Hopefully we all get in

I didn't get the CBC email either. I don't think we have to worry about it.

Honestly, all of us who got the "additional correspondence" response probably got in. Although, there is that neurotic side of me that continues to creep in and say, "What if I am that one person who gets rejected after the additional correspondence." Hahaha. It's kind of silly how the UIC admission update system just intensifies all of our neuroticism.

They should just change the system already and save couple months of our lives we are losing from all the anxiety of waiting.

Foreal. I usually don't check SDN, but the UIC process got me navigating this thread like its my fulltime job. Like you said, we probably got in. Hopefully in the next couple days we will be celebrating while filling out the site placement card, lol.

yup I am the same. I rarely looked at SDN until my status started to change for UIC. I read through almost all of the past 3-4 years of the UIC forums trying to look for clues and answers hahaha

Ugh same. Like, what if I'm the first candidate they hated so much that they sent me an additional correspondence detailing all my various faults and telling me how awful a person I am?
