2016-2017 University of Illinois Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Do they accept application updates if you had an interview?

For those who got their campus placements, do you find out through your portal 2 weeks after they received your deposit, or will they email/mail you?

Hi guys, so my portal listed that they received my deposit. However, the check isn't showing up in my bank statement. Is this happening for any of you guys?

They might make a not on portal as soon as they receive payment confirmation, while your bank may take a few business days to update

For any current students....

I was recently accepted to UIC and my fingers are crossed for the Chicago campus. I live about a 45 minutes train ride outside of the city and I'm considering commuting for the first year to save money. However, I have heard from a few people that I'm going to want to live on campus for the resources.
Of course I want to live in the city but I have to be smart with my loans...
What are your opinions on the matter?

Okay, so this might be a stupid question, but for the Hep B form in my portal, what is that? Should I just have my doctor's office send in information, or...?

Also, is campus assignment dependent upon prior receipt of my transcript/Hep B stuff?

Just emailed them about the 10panel drug test... The Hep B Form... and if the transcript can be electronic or does it need to be a hard copy and where to send it. Waiting on the response.

campus assignment is not dependent on that, only deposit i believe

Anyone know if the castle branch thing costs money? Also anyone know if there is a deadline for the drug panel stuff? Because I'm OOS here I don't want to commit unless I get some financial aid package so I can compare offers.

I thought you can hold acceptance offers at multiple schools? Doesn't paying the deposit just secures you a seat, but you can hold multiple seats till April 30th?

Sorry for the confusion. I sent in my admissions response via snail mail, but I guess I wanted to know if there were deadlines for the Castle Branch stuff (also associated costs) because I don't want to spend unnecessary fees for a school if I will end up withdrawing because of the lack of a decent financial aid package.

I thought the drug panel was required for M2 and M3 students. Did any incoming M1 get a notification to complete a drug panel?

Ah I see. Signing up for castle branch was free, no fess required. The 10 drug panel is required for M1 students but I'm not sure when the deadline is.

UIC M1 here, if anyones got any questions. feel free to post em and ill get back asap. Bored studying for the last physio exam of the semester. 🙄

How do you know its required? The To-Do list says that the task was created by CastleBranch and it seems almost automated since it was due like the day after I logged on.

Hey! Do you remember CastleBranch and the due dates of all of that?! And if the 10 panel drug test is due before some date of your M1 year?

Hey all, I am pretty sure some of you are inputting the wrong code on castle branch. There shouldn't be a drug panel, just immunization and 3 other requirements, and I'm pretty sure there is a cost to submit the form. Correct me if I'm wrong............Also the deadline could depend on if you needed a booster and another antibody titer

Just did it again...

Now I have two 10 panel drug tests required... hahahaha!

Now I have two codes... talked to CastleBranch... The other code allows for a 30 dollar payment one. Does that sound right? (Its the other code without the dm at the end)

Just spoke to someone at admissions and you have to enter the code into Castle Branch without the DM and it should come up with a package that costs $30 and will require a few immunizations

They are pretty lax about all that, i'd get it done before orientation otherwise they are going to be hounding for you to get it done, especially because you see some patients during your first year.
Yes, you need to take a 10 panel drug test also. Upload all that jazz and you should be good to go.

I think the code with a DM is not the right code for the immunization req, use the other code with (without DM) the 30 doller payment. So I think you are on the right track

So should we have two requirements? The immunizations and the drug panel?

Ok I talked to admissions.

At this time just use the code without the DM and worry about the immunizations and labs.

In the future she said we will receive an email detailing the specifics of the 10 panel drug test.

But at this time just the code without the dm at the end. That will get you the 30 dollar order. You can contact castlebranch to cancel the 10panel drug screen.

She also said all of this is due by July 1st. So don't kill yourself! You've been accepted!!

Any news on placements though from people who were accepted in November?

I have been in "applicant in process" status since October. Does anyone know when UIC stops sending invites out? If you haven't received an invitation by December, does it mean it's a silent rejection?

Same question

I am pretty sure that at least last year they went into April with II. But I think it definitely goes into March! So by no means are your rejected. I actually know of a lot of people who get accepted later in the cycle. (Like in Jan-March)

Just to give a first-hand account, I was given an II to UIC last cycle on 3/3/16, interviewed on 3/25/16, and was accepted on 4/25/16. I also know others in my interview group who were accepted as well, so I wasn't just an exception. So for all those still waiting for II's, I wouldn't give up hope. There are still a few months to go. You can look at previous years' threads to get a better idea of when the last II's occurred.

For those of you who already interviewed but haven't heard back yet, you still have a chance too. I know that there were some people who interviewed months before me in the cycle and were stuck in "Decision Pending" until May; some of them were eventually accepted. Except for last year (which admissions told me was an anomaly), waitlist acceptances typically occur in June and July. I know waiting is brutal, but at the end of the day, if you get accepted, who cares how long it took. All I'm saying is don't count yourselves out yet.

Is there a facebook group for accepted students?

I believe a page will be made at some point!

I periodically search Facebook for "University of Illinois College of Medicine Class of 2021". Right now the search results show the class of 2020, so it doesn't look like the new one's created yet, but I'll post something once I see it, unless someone beats me to it.

I'm a member of the Class of 2020 group and it looks like it was created on 12/8/2015, so it might be soon.

For those of you who are accepted (or will be) and are working through the CastleBranch stuff, here are a few helpful pointers I learned along the way:
  • For those in the Chicago area, I shopped around for vaccines and titers and found out that the UIC clinic (for students, faculty, and staff) was the cheapest for performing the vaccines. I'm not sure if they do all of the tests and shots, but it's worth a call. I went to the one on the West Campus (Wolcott Ave.) which is where the med school is, but they might do them at the East Campus too (Halsted St.). It's okay if you're not officially a student yet. I just told them I was accepted and they were fine taking me. Just call ahead to double-check it's okay and to make an appointment. I think this is the correct contact info.

  • If for some reason you have to get a new vaccine or retake one, you should note that some of the vaccines come in a series which require a set amount of time (weeks or months) in between shots. For some (I don't remember which), if you wait too long in between you'll have to start over. I think hep B and polio vaccinations can take weeks or months so you should check on those relatively early.
  • I know last fall some students weren't able to be fully vaccinated by the time classes started, but as long as they notified Admissions and showed proof that they were "in progress" of the vaccination series, they were fine. UIC's policies can change though so I'd follow up with Admissions to be sure.
  • Last year only those attending the Chicago campus were required to take the 10-panel drug test, whereas UPR (Urbana-Peoria-Rockford) students were not. Earlier in this thread someone said that the drug test wasn't required for Chicago this year for M1's but it still showed up in CastleBranch. I don't know if that's correct or what the policy is now, but if that's true it could be showing up by accident because it was required last year.
  • If you're currently a student, you might be able to go to your school's wellness center/clinic to get vaccines and tests for cheap.
  • My health insurance didn't cover any of these expenses. My doctor's office would have charged the most (by a long shot). CVS' and Walgreens' clinics were cheaper, but school clinics were the cheapest. There might be better options out there, but this is what I could find.

Thank you for your reply! I hope that I will hear from them soon.

Does anyone know more details on the summer tuition UIC charges for M2 and M3 summers? Is this for all students?

Anyone from early November still waiting on a portal change from decision pending? II 11/3 and I'm assuming they just didn't get to my file at the last adcom meeting but just curious if anyone else has a similar situation
