2016-2017 University of Michigan Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
II!! Second one so far, both came in this morning within about an hour of each other, heh.

So exciting since this is one of my top schools and I really wanna visit Ann Arbor YUSS.

Primary submitted June 7th, about three minutes after AMCAS opened, verified that afternoon.
Secondary received June 24th, submitted July 13th (yes, I know, I'm bad).
LizzyM ~ 79.

Do they email you with IIs or did you just check the portal?

Did they let out multiple batches of IIs last Monday or is it just once/week? I was a late submitter but I'm getting antsy

Sent from my iPhone using SDN mobile

Congrats everyone! For those who received IIs, are you IS or OOS? I was looking back through last years thread, and people speculated that UMich sent large percentage of the first II batches to OOS applicants. I could be wrong though - which is why I am asking.

Judging by the number of states listed in the tweets, I would guess at least half of the II's sent so far are OOS.

I am definitely OOS

I'm OOS. Hope people hear back next week! So excited about this one.

Does Michigan not look at LORs for IIs?

I've definitely heard this rumor before, I think I recall a post of someone from a previous cycle saying they got an II before their LORs were in.

Someone in this cycle, that posted this morning said they got an II without their letters being in yet.

Does anybody have insight into the optional dinner the day before the actual Friday interview date? I would obviously like to attend, but since I am working full-time and have a limited number of personal days, I would like to avoid having to take 1.5-2 days off for one interview. Would not attending hurt my chances of being accepted?

The dinner before is usually at the Pizza House with current students. Has no impact on Adcoms, just gives you an opportunity to socialize with current students. Most folks fly in the day before, and instead of eating alone, have a chance to ask current students questions outside the "interview" day.

This might seem like a dumb question, but if you're flying back home the same day as your interview, how do we change out of our suit? In the airport? Also, I know Michigam allows it, but do most schools allow you to store luggage during your interview day?

Does anyone know how we access the Michigan Interview Confirmation form? I get the impression that it is in the application portal, but can't seem to find it.

I found it! In case anyone else was wondering, there is a link in the interview scheduling confirmation email that will take you to it. OOPS!

Does the application portal still say "SUBMITTED" after you receive an interview offer? Or does it change.

Yes, there is a room to store luggage, restrooms to change after interview, as this was true on all the interviews I attended.

U of M Interview was done around 3PM in prior years, so usually plenty of time to change, catch shuttle to airport (airport is only 1/2 away).

Anyone else not receive a secondary yet?
When did you submit your primary? As far as I know, UM does not pre-screen and everyone usually receives their secondary within 72 hours of their primary application submission. If it has been a while, I'd recommend calling the admissions office (and also check your spam folder). UM is known for it's rolling admissions so it's in your best interest to solve your situation ASAP. Good luck!

awesome thanks so much for this.

Mine does still show the green "submitted" box on the portal.

App verified today received the secondary immediately and submitted and was complete 3 hours later.

so does anything change on the application portal? as in you can only see if you received an interview from the link in the email saying you received an II?

The interview is reflected under a new "view your events" tab, as well as a status message at the top of the checklist.

Question for those interviewing on 9/23:
I fly in on the 22nd and (plan) to stay with a medical student that night. I booked my return flight for Saturday, as I want to catch a game in The Big House and explore Ann Arbor post-interview. However, most medical schools only offer one night of student housing. If anyone is in a similar situation, I am looking for a hotel roommate Friday night in order to mitigate cost (if you've checked prices you know that even the two star hotels run you more than a couple secondaries). Reply / PM if you're interested!

I think they are so expensive because of the football games.

Be aware that traffic on a football Saturdays is crazy, and may impact your return to the airport unless you are flying out at least 3-4 hours after the game ends. Game day is great, but 112,000 people in Ann Arbor creates HUGE TRAFFIC JAMS on the expressways leading out of Ann Arbor after the game. Also, football tickets are not usually readily available to the general public for more than an odd seat here or there, so make sure you have a football ticket before you make the flight plans. Not sure what shuttle arrangements are available on football Saturdays either.

If you are a sport fan, a game in the Big House not something to be missed, just make sure to plan ahead so you are not stuck in DTW when you miss a flight.

Thanks so much for the insight. I love AA and plan to stay an additional day with or without a ticket to the game. Ecstatic for the opportunity to interview at UMich. Go Blue!

So if I was complete super early, like 7/4, should I consider this one a loss or is there still a chance of a late invite?

give it time lol. I submitted the same time as my friend and he got an interview in the first round, I got 3rd round. They give out interviews every Monday, so wait at least 8 more Monday's before considering it a loss. Even then, it's not really a loss.

Ish.
I believe last year they did 560 or so. Can't remember the exact number.

5 year average is about 598 according to their snapshot. Don't give up hope yet! (I'm telling myself that too)
