2016-2017 University of Michigan Application Thread

Man, I'm getting pretty nervous having not received any IIs yet. Complete to 14 schools the first few days of August and still no bites whatsoever. I know, patience is a virtue, but when it's about your future career path it's difficult to be patient.

I submitted everywhere at the end of July and got my first II last week. You should be right around the corner...

haha i submitted everything mid june and it's been nothing but radio silence and a rapid rejection from CCLCM. dyinggggggg

Has anyone received an II who submitted their secondary in August? From skimming this thread, it seems the latest submitted secondary that's received an II is from late-July.

I sure hope so, my lab PI has been starting to stress out too asking me nearly everyday whether I've heard anything back, haha. Congrats on the II though! And @ooooooooooze, I'm sorry buddy, that's gotta be rough... Chin up though! As I've seen in so many other threads, radio silence is still better than a rejection for what it's worth.

I submitted Michigan literally within the first three days of July and I still have no II lol

Can anyone confirm the High Acceptance rate after Interview Invitation?

Just look at the MSAR. Number of interviews vs number of acceptances. Its not insider information.
MSAR does not give acceptances, it gives number of matriculants. Those who have a subscription to U.S. News and World Report have access to the information I inquired about.

The person I'm interested in keeps texting me every Monday because we both applied to Michigan and neither of us have gotten an interview...it would be kinda cute if the situation wasn't so sad LOL

They have been sending out IS II's, its just been higher proportions of OOS II's than normal....
All of this IS and OOS is based on a comment made by someone who goes to UofM for all I know everyone that is supposed to be invited from IS already has been.

Well that comment confirmed it, but it was obvious from the tweets that more than half of the invites were OOS. If you have 33 invites and 18 states are included, its obvious at least 17 of the invites are OOS.

Well it's to be expected that U of M sends out more OOS invites than IS invites because the applicant pool is larger for OOS.

You are correct 180 IS vs 418 OOS IIs. Currently 283 have been sent out. It is possible that that a majority of IS invites are a subset of that 283. But unlikely, They probably sent out IIs to compelling IS applicants and URM IS candidates to snag them. But there is no way to know for sure besides asking them on twitter.

Can we all agree that fueling our anxiety on the basis of tweets containing sparse information is bonkers? Sure they Sent 33 II's to 18 states, but one of those states could be MI, and that state could have 16 interviews! Or none!

We may never know.

Honestly if you are IS with LizzyM >71 your odds are good. Also keep in mind there are only 300-ish applicants in the great state of MI that fit this profile.

Question for you all. I was completed around Aug. 20th with secondaries sent out to 9 schools. I have an MCAT of 517 and a 3.8 CGPA and 3.7 sGPA, with average ECs. For various reasons, I now and wondering about Michigan. Is it too late for me, Ohio resident, to add them to my primary and subsequently fill out the secondary? I would pre-write the essays, so as soon as I got the secondary it would be submitted. Just curious if there is even a point in this or not. Also, I am happy with my school list, just want to add a few more reach schools, and Michigan would be a dream come true. thanks

I've found that the limit of my status as my neurotic portal-checking approaches infinity seems to be constant. +1 Trying to stay calm.

Then you've noticed that the portal will sometimes display your status with a big, capitalized, heart-attack-inducing, "FILE COMPLETE", before the usual message?

To this end, I wish someone would write a program to do that. Basically feed your credentials for all the schools and it logs in every hour to check status and alerts your phone if there are any changes. I would call it ,app analupdater

Huh. I couldve sworn there were more IS offers. Matriculants on MSAR are 95 IS and 75 OOS.
That is people who actually matriculate, not who were offered admissions. Most IS don't find a better deal, a lot less yield on OOS, who go to other top 10 schools.

IS w/LizzyM of 71 got me like 😱
Their IS stats are 3.8~ 33~ at the median. But that means half the IS acceptees have an MCAT lower than 33! Also half have a gpa less than 3.8! I would sincerely doubt that half the class has gpa less than 3.8 and mcat less than 33 together. So a LizzyM of 71 puts you in a good spot. I did some analysis on this question based on hypothetical distributions a few pages back in this thread.

I'm at undergrad here too, which I think gives me bonus points where it wouldn't for other IS students. Seems Michigan doesn't have a particularly strong sense of in-state loyalty but does its best to give its undergrads a chance.

I for one will write to my congressman and senator to show this OOS loyalty that the great institution of MI is displaying in the admissions process. I think it is an outrage. Jk. It makes sense to diversify the class, also you need to recruit nationwide talent for an institution the size of MI.

Yeah, UM being a public state school, seems to show very little IS loyalty outside their own undergrads.....

I'd venture to say that UofM has a pretty good endowment from its Alumni, gets major funding from grants, and doesn't rely as heavily on state funding as some schools do. Thus they wouldn't be as pressured to accept a higher portion of in state applicants.

Just a hypothesis

U of Virginia, U of West Virginnia, VCU, University of Vermont, Penn , Iowa. All these schools tend to be open their doors to a fair share of OOS applicants. U of M is hardly unique in that regard. It just stings when it happens in your back yard.

I dont think that is the case.

Missouri takes no OOS gets roughly 38% funding from the state. U of M gets 27%. Also god knows what other support they get from the state in terms of other benefits. Missouri takes ZERO OOS U of M takes almost 50%.

On the flip side U of M does have a large endowment so they could potentially tell the state to bugger off.

Good research! Seems that general funding is a good catch-all category. I did some light digging and found the state of Michigan's FY 16 budget for the purpose of this exercise.

http://www.michigan.gov/documents/budget/Budget_all_together_2016_final_481096_7.pdf?20160914164311

UofM - Ann Arbor received slightly over $300 mil in state funding. If all this was diverted to the med school (not logical) - it would account for 4% of the total budget.

EDIT: We would also have to consider the portions of health care funding now directly tied to the university that would go to the school. It would be a crapshoot guessing here and probably makes up a good portion of state funds.

Of interesting note, IS/OOS tuition accounts for $7mil of the budget or a staggering 0.10% - and some think med school is TOO expensive.

I just submitted app to this school. Given that I submit secondary by 9/16, is it too late?

That, plus it's crazy and annoying how there's just too many pre-meds at UM. Every medical school in Michigan has its greatest number of matriculants from UM, mostly because of the sheer number of applicants.
